Our guest list is out of control

Our guest list is out of control

We promised our parents, who are taking care of the bill, that we would not have more than 160 people at the wedding, well last night we went over the guest list and it is at 247...I feel like we are playing wedding survivor trying to vote people off..it just cant be done! I have been told that my room gets crowded at 180 people..what should i do?!?

LOL. Sounds like my story...except I have to pay for the wedding. Why don't you just pick up the tab after the 180. I think that seems fair. I started at around 160 and am up to 230. I really can't cut anyone. I did leave out guests though. But only for people who aren't serious with their SO. Good luck!!

I know it's hard you wanna invite everyone!!! I really can't have more than 130 and my list is at 180 so thats not bad...But really don't invite people for the sake of it, you don't wanna be at your wedding and not know 1/2 the poeple. :)

We invited 210 and ended up at just under 150. I'd cut the list by not inviting everyone with guest.

I think you should just invite your friend, and not your friend + 1 guest.
Then seat all the single guests together, so they’re not alone..

Keeping it adults only should narrow the list down too!

You don't have to invite everyone with a guest. But I know how you feel. My guest list was 351.

FH and I made a tentative list before we looked and after his brother had to fight to get his list to 450 (FH is Indian- they have 700 ppl weddings!) we knew we'd have a lot of people. We have set monetary gifts from parents and we are covering the rest.

Now we are cutting the lists and may cut out old HS friends that we still talk to but don't really go out with...we'll see. I'm only inviting ppl from work single (even if they are married) unless they are the partners.

You can def do single invites and no kids...would you consider a venue change? FH and I almost did that. Your wedding is far away enough that they can probably re-book...I feel your pain! Good luck!!

Also let say you have seen cousin Jill, you haven't seen since you were 9, don't invite her.
That girl in HS Kate, who you shared a few classes with but now you haven't seen her since she went to college in LA and you have her email and she has yours, but you two never talk, cut her off.
Yeah you may have many nice memories with theses people but if they aren't making an effort to be a part of your life now, why invite them to your wedding. And don't worry about them being hurt, because if the shoe was on the other foot they would be doing the same thing.

1.don't even anyone from work
2. don't invite anyone you don't have there phone number.
3. don't invite someone because someone said its the right thing to do.

I eliminated everyone from work except for people who quit and I keep in touch with them.

ooo...good rule! i agree. i say if you wouldn't normally invite that person to your home for a casual dinner...one in which you would actually have to entertain them and have a conversation with....then nix them from your guest list.

don't invite someone 'just because' they invited you to their wedding or because someone says you have to. sometimes we wind up inviting 'friends of friends' to make sure that there are enough people to mingle in various categories. (i.e.--families, co-workers, good friend, casual friends, etc.)

bottom line--only you know who you can cut from the list. will feelings get hurt? perhaps. but you might find that some people that you thought you 'had' to invite to avoid drama--may not have even thought you'd consider them!!

I agree that you shouldnt invite people with a guest!! Thats what we did since some of my firends arent in serious relationships anyway ( Iasked them and they were sooo ok with it)

Re: Our guest list is out of control

If the room gets crowded at 180, then you have to get your invite list down to 180 from 247. Start with eliminating all the 'and guest' unless the guest is engaged to the invited person. Next eliminate all persons under the age of 18. Then eliminate all co-workers from the invite list. If that doesn't get you down enough, then you need to examine each and every person on the list and ask:

1. Do I know this person, or is it a friend of my/his parents?

2. If it's someone you know, do you have their phone number?

3. When is the last time you spoke with this person on the phone? And who made the call, you or them?

4. When is the last time you actually saw this person? Who initiated that visit/dinner/whatever, you or them?

5. Is there a good reason you haven't seen/spoken to this person? (for example, both my BM are OOT, but I talk to them on the phone at least once a month, and I used get to AZ every other year to see one BM, [with the wedding there is now a huge gap in actually seeing her] and to VA to see the other twice a year).

Compile a list of people based on the yes and no responses to the above questions, and then cut cut cut. People you don't know, haven't seen, haven't spoken to, do not need to be invited (unless they are friends of the parents since they are paying for it).

You may get 220 though if you invite 292. I invited 314 & only 234 responded yes. Remember at least 20% will say no--even if you think they are going to come.

knock out people you haven't spoken to in over 2 years.

knock out anyone who doesn't already know or would care that you actually got engaged.

Re: Our guest list is out of control

Thanks everyone! I keep saying we have plenty of time, but then I think, the longer we have, the more people we are going to end up inviting! It is hard, fh's family owns their business, so we are going to wind up with some very important associates there, that I cant take off the list, and I have a huge family, my mom has 12 brothers and sisters, who are all married with kids, all my cousins are my age or older, my dad has 5 brothers and sisters...I took off dates, and dropped kids...but we are still around 220...I am thinking of not inviting some family that I have not seen in a while...
