move to astoria! it's only a few stops to manhattan and we love it here.

the rent is cheaper than manhattan prices. decent sized 1 bedrooms average about 1300-1450 these days.

I live in Astoria now too and you just can't beat it. I don't know where you live in the city for 2500 but my commute to work from the upper east side and from astoria take the same amount of time so it is worth it!

i dont know if anyone wrote this already but if not, do you have a lease??? by law with a lease a landlord can only raise your rent by like 10% per year.....and $550 is way over 10% for a $2500 monthly rental.....read your lease!!!

nope, the landlord can raise your rent as much as he/she wants as long as your lease doesn't say 'rent control' or 'rent stabilized.' def double check that your lease doesn't say this.

Rent here on LI and in NYC is insane! Once my husband gets back from Iraq I will be moving down to Wilmington, NC. It is amazing how much more you can get for your money in the South! I love LI, but I could never afford to start a life here with my husband.

I agree with looking into astoria...I grew up in astoria since i was a kid and only moved a few short years ago but fh still lives there along with most people i know. I also lived on the last stop on the N train. It takes 13 mins on the dot to Lexington. If you live at other stops before the last stop then obviously it will take even less time. The trains do run on the weekend, not every 5 minutes the way it does during the week but still runs pretty well. Maybe every 15-20 minutes.

BUT know that even in astoria rent has gone up ALOT so be careful. I mean theres apartments selling for $800-900k and the new ones being built now are $600k for a studio. Theres still some areas you can find a little bit lower. If you want info feel free to FM me anytime. I know people who bought condos in a certain area in astoria, a nice part haha and good prices. I know you're not looking to buy but even to rent will be less. LIC is great too and they're really building it up and from there its 8 minutes to grand central. only 3 stops away. But again they're high rise luxury buildings and 1-2 bedrooms sell for 1 mill and up.

Another area i really recommend in queens is forest hills. Its a very nice area, and in the forest hills/kew gardens area you have ALOT more options for apartments. In astoria theres not many buildings, most apartments are in 2 family houses. Forest hills/kew gardens is FILLED with co-ops and condo's. Its mostly all tudor style, the neighborhood is also real good. If you need info on this then definitely FM me because i live in kew gardens now and FH and I want to buy an apartment in forest hills/kew gardens when we're married. We've been searching non-stop so i can tell you the price for just about every building ...you can get some real great deals. Forest hills and kew gardens both have the LIRR which is what i take into the city...from kew gardens its 17 minutes to penn station and from forest hills its 15 minutes...yes i time them lol.

550 MORE a month? holy moly!! that's insanity!!! there are areas of queens that are really nice!!!!!!!!! and youare still close to manhattan
