I have a 10 month old JRT and he's still peeing all over the floor no matter how many times we walk him. He'll not pee outside and then the minute we leave him alone he pees on he floor. Do you think this is for spite? My mom's so angry with the dog and now she's always tying him up! I want to be able to help him. Any advice?
Does anyone else have a JRT? How much do you feed him/her?

is he neutered?? because I think that would help with the peeing.

He is neutered. We stoppec rating him b/c he's just pee in the crate . He's really smart, adn he knows to bark to go out, etc. but when e leave the room...maybe he gets nervous...or he thinks we won't be back to walk him..I don't know!

She can't tie him up!!! He's not being sptiteful! He's confused. Please hire a trainer to spend an hour with your mom (is it her dog?) and let the trainer see what's going on and give your mom some tips. It's the owner/parent who has to be trained really, more than the puppy. Good luck!

Have you used an enzyme cleaner on the floor where he goes? (Like Nature's Miracle?) You have to get all the smell (even the smell YOU can't smell - he can!) off the floor.

JRT are hyper dogs. Clueless is right. He shouldn't be tied up that is so mean. Look into getting training classes for him. Petco has them all the time.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
We have a trainer..He goes every week. We stopped recently. They're supposed to tbe top in their filed but when he was pooping on the floor a lot they had us basically starving him to control it and he lost a lot of weight and I kept saying 'i think he' ssick I think he's sick' and as it turns out he had/has worms! So we've had a lt of prooblems..and he's getting more and more hyper b/c my mom keeps tying him! I'm going insane..I wish there were a solution. e's def. not being spiteful b/c after he does it he has this sad look on his face. he knows he did wrong!

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
Have you taken him to the vet? My old roomates had a puppy (mutt - I think but looked like a black lab) anyway, it turned out he apparently had some kind of kidney problem. They put him on a special diet (and maybe medication - it was a long time ago so I'm not positive) and he was so much better. Good Luck!

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
Please tell your mother she is only making the problem worse by tying him up. If she wants to have a REAL problem on her hands, she'll keep tying him.
He is still a baby, with a baby bladder. Some dogs take longer than others to train. Please hire a new trainer and start agin. IT IS NOT THE DOG'S FAULT!!!! He wants to please you but he is confused as to what to do and/or he is physically not able to pee on schedule yet.
Does he EVER pee or poo outside? If yes, you need to give him like a sirloin steak when he does, as soon as he does, so he knows he is a super-good boy. So get a treat, a really, really good treat, and bring it outside with you, and when he pees or poops make it the biggest fun deal ever and hug him and kiss him and give him the treat.
From what I remember with my puppy, we had to take him out all the time, and keep walking with him until he peed/poopes. Sometimes it seemed like forever.
Please get him un-tied, it is absolutely not right to tie him up. Please!

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
First off, a puppy with elimination issues is not out of control!! Just frankly, still a puppy needing proper training.
Agree with what has already been said, talk to the vet & definitely a new trainer. I can't believe a trainer told you to stop feeding a puupy so he wouldn't poop!!
Good luck!

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
Does he have some sort of peeing schedule? Like I know to let my dog out in the morning after I wake up because he goes right then. Then I need to let him out every few hours because he pees a lot because he drinks so much. I guess, when he does finally go outside, praise him like anything and give him some treats, so he knows he's doing the right thing.

He pees and poos outside a lot,a dn he used ot be relaly well behaved, but now he's sactng crazy, i think from being tied up..it's making me insane..I can't get my mom to stop tying him. She enver ties up HER puppy. I'm SO frustrated with her. Thanks for confirming that it's NORMAL, which is what I've been trying to tell her. I was so angry w/ those trainers...he's finally put most of the weight back on.... I'm gonna try to talk to my mom again, and tell her that everyone says it's normal!
She's comparing him to other people's dogs who were eprfectly trained at this age and cna hold it in for hours and I keep telling her it's not his fault! But we do get frustrated walking him 12 times a aday and then he pees inside.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
Does your mother have a fenced backyard? If so, tell her to buy a dog door. I had similar issues with my dog (although I never tied him up) and the dog door worked like a charm. Good luck, and please take the puppy away from your mother if she continues to tie him up. That's cruel and unnecessary.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
It may be in part that he's been tied up.
I know when training my puppy, we took him out and made a REALLY big deal of it when he went outside. (Treats, and I was literally jumping up and down telling him what a good boy he was.) When he did go inside, we gave him a quick NO and brought him outside. (I literally picked him up mid-pee and brought him out side when (if) he continuted outside, we praised again.)
A dog that young, especially if he is still having house training issues should NEVER EVER be out of sight of the owner - keep him tethered to you with a leash if necessary. Every time he LOOKS like he's going to go, bring him out. If he goes, praise, if not, bring him in and then back out in a little while and always always always praise when he goes outside. It will definitely take time, but sooner or later the dog will understand that GOOD things happen when he pees outside, while not such good things happen when he doesn't.
I've also read that cleaning up the pee when the dog can see you can actually be a detriment. So if you do need to clean up, put the dog in another room first.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
Tying a little dog like that is horrible. JT are hyper dogs to begin with. Get training for him, but not tying . I would've reported that trainer for saying to not feed him for having an accident. Please tell your mom that she should never do that.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
We don't have a backyard at all, which is why the JRT was a abd idea. My mom got him for my sister who decided she didn't want him and dumped him on us. I LOVE him and I try so ahrd to train him, but I'm out of the house 13 hours a day.
The trianer didn't say not to feed him as punsihment, but since he was pooping 5 times a day, he felt it was b/c he was eating too much. That didn't sit right with me.. Now we 've even increased his food. He's too active to ever get fat! I'm trying to onvince my mom. I'm mkaing her souhd abd, she's really an animla lover, shes just at her wit's end and losing it, I think

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
How much is he eating? I don't have any specific numbers, but I feed my adult 45lb dog 2 cups a day. I think when he was around 20 lbs, we fed a bit over 1 cup. My dog is a fairly active breed, so for a good dog food, I'm guessing a JRT should be getting ~1 cup a day?
Sometimes you just need to keep going with the training - even when it gets frustrating. Make SURE he pees EVERY TIME he goes outside. If you bring him out and he doesn't pee, bring him back in, and then back out 10 minutes later. (repeat as necessary). (And praise like he won the puppy olympics when he finally does go outside) It's frustrating, but eventually he WILL get the idea that very good things happen when he goes outside, and nothing much good happens when he goes inside.

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
marymoon, how long have you and your mom had this dog? it doesn't matter how long you've had him ... it's more a question of how old he is. we got our dog at 7 mos old and he wasn't housebroken until well over a year because he spent the first 7 months of his life untrained. Have you owned him for 7 mos?
As far as the 'not getting overweight because he's active' theory -- it's false. My rat terrier (very similar to the JRT) is obese. HE would eat all day if he could. When he's not eating, he's chewing something.
I totally understand your frustration, but when he's housebroken (which he will be with a lot of patience), you'll realize how worthwhile all of your hard training work was. I realize you're out of the house for 13 hours a day. I certainly hope this isn't the case with your mom. If it is, that may explain why he is having training issues. All dogs, especially puppies, need someone home with them to reinforce their behaviors or they won't associate their 'wrongdoings' with the consequences.
If you and your mom are at your wits end with the puppy, you may want to consider finding another home for him. JRTs need to exercise a lot and if they are tied up, they will try to chew their way through the tie-up and choke, or worse yet get hurt or strangled if left unattended. Is he tied up inside or outside?

Re: Out of control JRT puppy
He's inside. We've had him for 8 months already! And it was going well for a long long time..and recently my mom just went insane..because I've been a lot more busy and I don't have the time to spend as much time with him as I used to. I didn't ask for the dog. I love him so much, but I never would have bought a dog at this stage in my life. I'm hoping things get better with my mom...
