out of curiosity...

Original post by lilpiggy742

who did NOT have an engagement party? Did anyone buy you engagement presents? I'm just asking b/c we didn't have one..and noone bought us anything ( not that i care but wanted to see what other couples experienced). But my friend is having an engagement party and they didn't register anywhere...and i don't want to give money-i'm sorry but i refuse...especially if i have to buy a shower gift and the wedding gift ( which i'll give money for that of course). I just get kind of pissy with all these parties b/c noone thought of me and my fh when we got engaged and it's difficult when you're saving for your own wedding. Do you think a gift like a platter or crystal dish would be ok? I just would hate to go the money route and i'm trying to get creative without breaking the bank.

we didn't have a party but did get some gifts and money from friends and relatives but very few.

I would say go to someplace like Marshall's and TJ Maxx where they have really cute things you cannot find at BBB and Fortunoff's like dessert dishes.

When I started to register, I thought it really ***** that these places don't have really cute things that are different. You can get all your basics but not the unique serving things.

You can't go wrong with dessert bowls or unique serving platters. another thing I also did was bought return address labels with the couples address but now they say Mrs. and Mrs. John Smith. I think that is a cute idea..Vista print does them very cheap.

Ok yes FH & I had an Eparty about 3 months after our engagement & befor ethe party we did receive a few e-gifts. Im shocked no-one has given you anything to acknowledge thsi time fo you guys. Im sorry. I think also if you do not want to give money then a nice crytsal bowl or platter is a very nice gift. Everyone can use crystal!

Me too....

And I honestly did not have an E-Party to say 'we want gifts' It was to celebrate. Obvi we are both very happy and we both love parties.
If we were looking for gifts then I would have had a cheaper party.... b/c in no way did we come even close to making up the money we spent on the party.... But like I said it was not about that to us.
You dont have to give a gift if you dont want to.

One of my friends just got engaged and had friends meet at a bar. I got her this frame from kohl's which was real inexpensive and adorable. Wish i could've done more just really broke lately. I think only one other person got them a gift which i was really suprised about. I would pick up a small frame or something.

omg i i love it! looks like im going to kohls today

I got it for eight dollars!! Early bird sale a few weekends ago! They have it online for seven and change!!!!!

We're not having one, my parent's said we either have an engagement party and a small shower, or a nicer shower, and my mom would rather it be a nicer shower. I tried to explain that that's all well and good, but can end up hurting us in the long run. We haven't gotten any gifts without the party, a couple of cookbooks, a George Foreman grill, and my sisters gave us toasting glasses and some money. A very distant relative of FH gave us a coffee and tea set from Greece and some money. We haven't gotten anything from FH's immediate family, I think they're waiting for a party that will never come.

did you send announcements? sometimes that will motivate people to send you a gift. honestly engagement gifts, e-parties, epics--those are NY things, so a lot of people don't think of it unless there's a party.

I did have an engeagment party...but I told everyone NO gifts...yet I still made out pretty well. It was a nice surprise. But, my whole reasoning to having a party was to get all the kids familular with eachother ...and have all the families FULLY meet. It was a smaller affair...about 65 people ... mainly only family and a few close friends.
You would be fine with what you listed. For one of my friends e-party I only got her a lenox ring holder. She loves it and will be using it for her wedding day pics too. Don't spend an arm and a leg...it's not worth it. It's just a little thing to celebrate your getting married....
Lastly...people usually wouldn't think of giving a gift unless it was at a party... JMO

We didn't have a party and we didn't get any gifts either except from my brother and my mom..that was it and we were REALLY touched by their gifts..I guess we weren't really expecting anything but it would have been nice...even to just recieve cards that said Congrats..

oOo and my aunt bought us that frame from kohls as a Christmas gift last year...

Re: out of curiosity...

We did not have one, and we got a gift from my cousin (MOH) and her Mom, and of course, my Mom and Dad. FH's Mom had us over and cooked us a nice dinner. That was about it. We didn't have a party because honestly, none of our friends or relatives ever had one, here or in NY, so it's just not something we even thought of. IMO, we would've felt a bit odd setting up an event for gifts to be given just because we got engaged. I'm not really a fan, unless it's a celebration without gifts.

I do agree it's hard when people do an e-party, a shower, and a wedding, and expect gifts for all three . . . . especially when you're in the bridal party!! That's a huge expense over a whole year or so. So, I think a simple gift is completely appropriate, something small to say 'congrats' but you don't need to buy a wedding-like or shower-like gift. You've got a long way to go!!

I didn't have one and only my immediate family gave me gifts. I'm considering having a jack and jill shower though to kind of make up for not having an engagement party. I don't know for sure though.

fh's grandma got us a crystal jar thing..my grandma got me some corningwear or however you spell it...but thats it...my other grandma didnt even call me to say congrats :( i was happy for the 2 gifts but fh's parents didnt do nething ( my dad hosted and paid for a parent meeting thing at a restaurant)...im just kind of pissed off from that b/c they arent helping with the wedding and my dad is shelling out so much-it would have been nice if they did something for us as well. see noooooooooow i sound like a spoiled brat haha oh we did send out std's so all our family and friends know we're getting engaged...seriously..id be happy with a congrats card..it just seems like people need an excuse to be generous instead of doing something out of kindness

Re: out of curiosity...

we didn't have one either. like what most are saying- we didn't want it to look like we were looking for money and gifts. Before we met and even after we got together, FH and I had each been through the hassle of having to go to others weddings and had to buy engagement gifts and then shower gifts and then a wedding gift.... it's too much!!!! (FH calls it a huge inconvienence).
We didn't want appear that we were looking for gifts and hand-outs. we did get some things from our parents and grandparents. we're planning on registering just before the holidays incase people want to buy us things for christmas. and i'll register for more stuff in the spring for the shower.

We didnt have an engagement party either. We didnt want to spend the money on the party or have our familys spend the money when everyone is trying ot save as much as possible.
I would give a small gift. The bowl or soemthing would be nice. I hate giving money too. Weddings cost so much that I also refuse to give money until the actual wedding day.....I'm on the same page with you.
