Over doing themes

Over doing themes

Okay, here is the deal. When my FH and I decided to get married we agreed on a medieval theme. We then agreed right away that our wedding was going to be pagan, because that is his and some of my beliefs so we feel that we shouldn't have to hide anything. So that became part of the theme. Then we choose autumn because its our favorite timje of yr and its not too hot or too cold. So autumn got throw into the theme. We picked October because November is too cold and September doesn't have enough folage. And now I'm kinda liking the halloween theme a bit. Like I really love the grave stone place cards and we were going to use pumkins. Am I going too far with the themes? I just love them all so much! Help!

I think its very possible to overdo a theme.
When guests start to feel like they are at a beach party, a garden party, a halloween party instead of a wedding, thats when its too much.

But touches here and there of different but related themes are fine.

Just ultimately remember, its a theme for your WEDDING not a theme party.

Re: Over doing themes

I think if you have too many 'themes' then they would all get lost within each other..
you can still do a fallish medieval theme that would incorporate pagan tradition but if you have too many diff. things i think each theme you're going for wouldn't stand out. if i'm making any sense..

ETA: i don't agree with the above poster though (sorry) in that a theme can turn it from a 'wedding' into a 'theme party'.. If your idea of a good wedding party is to have it be themed, then go for it. When you think about it, a 'wedding' is sort of a theme in itself right?

I like the gravestone placecards! Who cares if they're not 'wedding'? A wedding should be about who the couple are, not about what others think a wedding should be.
JMO of course ladies, no offense meant to anyone

IMO, gravestone placecards is over-doing it.

if it was a Halloween party, cute idea. but not for a wedding.

Re: Over doing themes

Maybe what I could do is have the ceremony pagan and medieval of course and decorate with autumn flowers. Then throw a wild halloween reception? The autumn decorations will go with the halloween ones. If everyone is dressed up it would kinda go. What do you all think? I know, I'm bad!

wow - the gravestones may be a bit morbid for a wedding I think.

Re: Over doing themes

skip the graveyard place cards.

I was just at a party where 2 of the guests VERY RECENTLY lost a loved one- in fact, the funeral was the following day.

I am sure they would have been very upset to see names on a gravestone at the party.

as for the other things you mentioned, I think it sounds great!

I love the grave stone place cards, I wish I had them. LOL LOL. I really do.
I agree with what all the girls are saying. My wedding is being held on Halloween. Everyone is looking forward to it and expecting such a different approach and spin on the whole wedding thing.
I do have a lot of haunted themed items to decorate with so it gives the feel of having a wedding in a haunted castle. Instead of flower cones I am putting the rose petals in little cauldrons. I did want the grave stone place cards but then it was leaning towards a Halloween party rather then a wedding celebration. I do want this celebration to be our wedding not have it feel like we are dressed as a bride and groom at a Halloween party.
Hope this helps.

They are cute, but I don't know if they're appropriate for a wedding. If you do use them, to maybe lighten them up a bit, I would loose the ones with the skulls and the ravens, and go with the pumpkins and gourds at the bottom--makes it feel a little less morbid.

Once you feel like you've conveyed the theme I would just be subtle about small details. But its fun!!

As for the placecards I would 'till death do us part' so its just not a morbid thing b/c I don't think your going for that. JMO

For the more traditional guest ie.. inlaws, we'll put small flowers on the stones, and for everyone else the pumkins, skulls, ravens, etc... I know my our friends would get a kick out of them and they make cute favors.

Well its your wedding, so do what makes u happy. I wouldn't put to much Halloween stuff, because then it turns into a halloween party and not a wedding.

Re: Over doing themes

i think the grave stones are creepy... as a guest, i would not want to see my name on a grave stone.

I was all for the gravestone placecards until I read this....this is a VERY GOOD POINT....

I don't think that you can over-do a theme-that's the whole point of having a theme, to have EVERYTHING connect into it. All of your various influences are related-so I think you're fine.
It would be wierd if mixed into the pagan/halloween/medieval/fall theme you decided to have pink tulip centerpieces.

speaking of centerpieces-I don't know what you picked, but I saw something where they put mums into pumpkins for CP's....it was really pretty.

Re: Over doing themes

Well I think you may have too many themes... if you overdo it, your guests will be very confused and they'll be so many things going on at once, that they'll lose focus of why they are there. For you and your FH. Remember, that's the whole purpose of the day... I think the graves stones are a little morbid. You are supposed to be celebrating your new LIFE together, not death. You want it to be a wedding, not a Halloween party. I hope I'm not sounding harsh. I think it's just coming out wrong! Ha!

But, on the other hand.... it's your wedding and you do what you want to do!

Re: Over doing themes

Thanks guys! I'll just put a hint of halloween stuff. The placecards, maybe the cake plates could be paper halloween plates, put a few beadds, some pumkings but thats it. I'm not going to over do it. As for the fact of someones death, I'm not going to be morbid, I'll try to make it tasteful. If someone died in October, would they be offended if their neigbor put a fake grave yard in their front yard like I see as a decoration EVERY year. I'm sure they would realise no mallous would be behind it.

Re: Over doing themes

I don't think they would think you're malicious.

But, I do think there's a difference between driving past a house with a graveyard decoration and picking up a graveyard placecard with someone's name printed on it. This is something that could make them upset during your wedding. Sure, lots of things could do that, but I think this one could be avoided.

Honestly, I would never have thought of it until I attended a party where some of the guests lost a loved one.
