Overpriced Photography prices!?!?

Original post by MichelleT

Ok i went to my first photography vendor tonight and this was a place i really thought i wanted to use. however, i had in my mind a budget of spending about $4k for both photography and videography (I am not sure if that is a lil low) but i thought after asking a lot of girls on here the average many said between $3-5k. so i thought that was't a bad budget. so after the guy talks and talks forever he finally brings up the package prices...his basic package was just a 60 page photo album for me and my fh, no parent albums, just 2 large portrait photos, 2 smaller photos and my proofs (a thousand proofs). mind you there is also no videography brought up yet.... his lowest price for this basic package was $4100. to basically get parent albums and videography and no other extras the price would be $6250!!!! this is with no special things at all. honestly i am flipping out i thought there were a lot of quality places that will offer me this stuff for about $4000 am i too crazy for thinking that???Can anybody please help me because i really wanted to stay in my budget but i also want to have beautful pics. I really only need the most basic video package out there my photos are most important...PLEASE GIRS TELL ME WHO IS GOOD AND PLEASE GIVE ME QUOTES. i am stressing now.. thanks!!

I would recommend Thomas Paul, he's very accommodating to your needs and will create a package to stay within your budget. Just tell him what you want to spend and he'll help you figure something out.

ITA! Good luck!

I dont think that your quote is necessarily overpriced-- it is on the higher end but some vendors are just more 'high end'.. they may have more experienced photographers, (as in the owner shooting) , use higher quality equipment, better repuation (i.e more in demand) etc or for whatever reason have become considered high end and therefore can charge more

So really its a question of finding the style you want that fits the budget you want.

Duet I have heard great things about-- but they were booked for my date and i understand they book quick! Patken was pretty flexible too..but i think w ith albums, video etc they still came out to over 5 (with basic video) and may well be about 6 with two photographers (though they are insistent that you really only need one) . although they said if you add pictures to your album after your wedding--- you pay half price for each pic so it ends up being less expensive than adding the pictures before.

When you are comparing 'average' prices-- it is helpful to know how many pictures are actually in the albims people are getting.. some people that have lower quotes may be getting fewer pics in their, or their parent albums.. adding additional pictures really can make the package price skyrocket.

We went crazy looking at Photographers and seeing all the different prices of the packages available. We also had the same budget in mind.
We saw about 6 photographers. We only wanted a book for us, the proofs and the cd of the photos and videography. We found 2 that gave us all that for $4000. The one we're going to use gave us some extras as well and 2 photographers.
We got quotes from $3800 to $6200.

WOW! Some great prices! My photographer, the one and only one I looked at because I LOVE him, was $6867. We will get a 48 page album, engagement session, digital files of all pics, and 2 photographers the day of. Not much but he was so worth it to us. My friend paid 10k for her video and photographer so remember that prices can really be up there, too. Just wanted to help take away that feeling of it being soo much money and overwhelming. Go with who you love is my recommendation! That's what we did and we didn't do a video because it wasn't important to us like the photos! Good luck in your search!

Oh and always ask if they'll knock anything off if you pay cash... Maybe you can save somewhere there, too...
