Hello! FH and I are trying to figure out where to move and it just seems like LI is not going to work for us. We dont think we can live a comfortable lifestyle while still being able to travel and have nice things on LI. So we are considering moving to PA-- his parents live there as do some of our friends. Wondering where people live, if you live in PA or if you are moving. And is it a really hard adjustment from LI? Not only will I really miss my family, but I'll really miss the beaches too!!! Im scared to make the change! Any input would be greatly appreciated! TIA :)

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
Diana, sounds like we are interested in the same type of area- Montgomery County. I had the same thought about the inground pool-- in fact, I made FH promise me that if we move there we will get one haha. If you are ever researching and find anything you think would be good for me to see/know, please FM me-- I appreciate any info! We have to move this August/Sept pretty much as soon as we get home from our honeymoon b/c Im going to be a school counselor so I need to find a job to start in Sept!

I don't live in PA but my good friend does. Her and her DH just sold their house in Manyunk and moved to West Chester PA where she grew up. The area is beautiful. Yes they don't have the beach right there, but they have a beach house in Avalon NJ (so they are able to afford two houses for about what we pay on LI for one).

I don't live in PA nor do I plan to move there, but I did spend 4 years there for college. My school was in Lewisburg, PA, which is right in the middle of the state. I couldn't ever imagine living there full time, central PA is rather boring IMO. However, I think the Philly suburbs are much different and much livlier, go and visit some areas and see where you are comfortable.
Bucknell??

We live near a town called Montville - it's off 287 in Morris County. There are cute little cities here called Madison, Montclair and Morristown - kind of maybe like Huntington or Rockville Centre. If you lived in PA, you might be near Princeton, which is a great town- cool record store, great places to eat, shop and indie movie theater. All of these little towns/mini cities are filled with great places to eat, fun bars, indie movies, cafes, etc. It's like the best of both worlds because in NJ/PA you still are able to get to NYC, AC, PA, parts of the Jersey Shore are nice like Long Beach Island and Cape May, etc.
Do your research first. NJ and PA have lots of cute historical towns. My mom lives in Franklin Square, LI area and when she comes to NJ she always likes our shops and things better - no idea why. Ha ha. Maybe it helps that there's no tax on clothing. Who knows?!

Thanks AllyDrew...I agree many areas in NJ and PA are very similar to Suffolk County. Where in NJ do you live? We are also interested in the Monnouth County area and also Cherry Hill.

Where in Monmouth County? There are a number of brand new homes in Jackson Township.

FH and I felt the same way, but we just bought land in Jim Thorpe, Poconos, PA and we are building our dream house for 1/3 of what it would cost here! My parents also bought land abot 2 blocks away so that makes it easier, but the area is great and we can't wait to move there! Good Luck!

I was just going to say this...Avalon and sea isle city are big PHilly beach areas. My sister goes all the time. It's about an hour away but so many people have houses. She goes to the beach all the time.
Another thing i think we all forget is that most of us will someday have children. Once that happens our life will become doinog things for them and going out to restaurants every weekend bars and stuff won't be as important. To me having a nice home with a nice yard for the kids is important...and I think you'll get that there...

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
We live in Merion..which is right outside philly. I work in philly and it's a 10 minute train ride and about a 15 minute drive (local roads). I would recommend any of the Main Line towns....they're safe and have some of the best school districts in PA. If you go to www.septa.org (our regional train system...sort of like the LIRR), and look up the R5 towards Paoli, all of those towns are on the mainline. Housing is on the more expensive side.
If you want a hipper, younger environement, Manayunk is the town to live in...lots of bars, restaurants, shops, etc.
I don't feel like suburban PA life is much diff from what I think LI is like (sorry, born and raised in queens/brooklyn/manhattan). But i feel is is VERY different from NYC. It's much less diverse, i feel like i have a hard time finding restaurants to go to because i was so used to the convenience of the city. To me, it's exactly what i imagined suburbia to be like. But all i ever do is go to work and come home, so i don't mind. If i do want to hang out to my satisfaction, i end up going back home.

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
FH's parents live in Lansdale, PA not too far from Philly and very Long Island-ish in my opinion. Their house is gorgeous and they have a real big backyard but its not as deserted as other parts, like where my relatives live in Mt. Pocono. It takes us 2 hours or less to get there from NY good luck!

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
Hi There...
I'm moving to PA. My FH is from Philly and we are looking for houses primarily in Delaware county. We are open to a few areas within philly itself that are also nice.
Since FH is from Philly, I do spend A LOT of time there. I've grown to love it there over the last 2 and a half years that FH and I have been together. What I like best about it is that it's a city but that gives a slightly suburban feel to it all over the place. I found it really funny how the neighborhoods change really quickly (mostly in Philly itself).
Anyway what's great about PA is that ANYONE can buy a house. They have something in EVERY price range, and you don't need to live in the boonies or in a bad neighborhood to get a cheap house. We are planning to buy a starter home that way in a few years (like 7) we can really upgrade to a much bigger nicer home in PA.
The areas we're considering for our starter home in Delaware county are:
-Havertown -Drexel Hill -Yeadon -Upper Darby -Lansdowne (I'm in love w/ Lansdowne) -Ardmore (but we probably can't afford anything there right now)
We've already gone out 2x w/ the realtor...we need to really start looking aggressively if we want to get something before the wedding.
Please let me know if you have any questions about my experience in and around Philly.
I really think you will grow to love PA. The people are great, the city is interesting, the houses are great, and it's still close enough to NY that you can go back whenever you want.

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
Anyone know anyone who lives in Lansdowne, Pa.? My 7th Great Grandparents, Richard and Mary Wood Bonsall, originally Quakers from England, were the original owners of most of the land that now comprises Lansdowne. They lived along the Darby Creek. Richard's Son, Jacob Bonsall, from whom my line descends, built 'Runnemede House' at 12 Owen Ave.,Lansdowne, Pa. The house is still lived in!! It is rumored that George Washington stopped at Runnemede House on the way from the Battle of Brandywine while retreating to Valley Forge. 'Grandfather' Jacob's Brother, Benjamin, lived in Philadelphia, and had his home confiscated by British General Howe, who used the house as his headquarters after taking the city of Philadelphia. I do!! FH's best man and his fiance just bought a house a few months ago in Lansdowne. It's a cute 3 bedroom, finished basement twin house. I forget which street it's on though. I love Lansdowne!

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...
We lived in Bethlehem for 2 years. it was a lot like LI..lots of malls, starbucks, etc. But we moved back to be closer to family. The house prices are less there, but the pay is on average 20-30% less than NY. A lot of people commute to NYC ot NJ (its really only one town over the NJ border)

Talibah, do you know where Owen Ave. is?? I've never been down to see all the places my ancestors lived; We presently live in Lancaster, Pa. I do have a lot of info about my ancestors and where they lived. I'd love to see Lansdowne some day!! I think my ancestors are buried in a Quaker Cemetery in Upper Darby?? I guess you can tell, I love history!! Mary MOB
