PA girls or girls moving to PA...

Original post by MichBride

Hello! FH and I are trying to figure out where to move and it just seems like LI is not going to work for us. We dont think we can live a comfortable lifestyle while still being able to travel and have nice things on LI. So we are considering moving to PA-- his parents live there as do some of our friends. Wondering where people live, if you live in PA or if you are moving. And is it a really hard adjustment from LI? Not only will I really miss my family, but I'll really miss the beaches too!!! Im scared to make the change! Any input would be greatly appreciated! TIA :)

Anyone know anyone who live in Lansdowne, Pa.?
My 7th Great Grandparents, Richard and Mary Wood Bonsall, originally Quakers from England, were the original owners of most of the land that now comprises Lansdowne. They lived along the Darby Creek. Richard's Son, Jacob Bonsall, from whom my line descends, built 'Runnemede House' at 12 Owen Ave.,Lansdowne, Pa. The house is still lived in!! It is rumored that George Washington stopped at Runnemede House on the way from the Battle of Brandywine while retreating to Valley Forge. 'Grandfather' Jacob's Brother, Benjamin, lived in Philadelphia, and had his home confiscated by British General Howe, who used the house as his headquarters after taking the city of Philadelphia. No I don't know where that street is. That's pretty amazing that you can track back your history that far! Lansdowne is a beautiful cute little suburb. I love love the houses there they are great starter homes at awesome prices!

I do!! FH's best man and his fiance just bought a house a few months ago in Lansdowne. It's a cute 3 bedroom, finished basement twin house. I forget which street it's on though. I love Lansdowne!

Talibah, do you know where Owen Ave. is?? I've never been down to see all the places my ancestors lived; We presently live in Lancaster, Pa. I do have a lot of info about my ancestors and where they lived. I'd love to see Lansdowne some day!! I think my ancestors are buried in a Quaker Cemetery in Upper Darby?? I guess you can tell, I love history!! Mary MOB

My Grandparents came here in 1683. I love researching my family roots!!!! Mary MOB

Just found this online. The Jacob mentioned, Grandson of George Wood, is my 6th great grandfather.

Diana, sounds like we are interested in the same type of area- Montgomery County. I had the same thought about the inground pool-- in fact, I made FH promise me that if we move there we will get one haha. If you are ever researching and find anything you think would be good for me to see/know, please FM me-- I appreciate any info! We have to move this August/Sept pretty much as soon as we get home from our honeymoon b/c Im going to be a school counselor so I need to find a job to start in Sept!

we'll be there by August September also.. my dd has to start school.. and i'm going to need to be on the sub list for teaching .. have you looked into getting PA certified for school counselor? Look up their PA dept of ed website to see if u need to do anything. I need to change my certification over, although Im not quite in a rush because i'm goign to take the year off with the baby..

I live in Philly and work in Delaware County, and I grew up on Long Island....I love Philly, great restaurants, manageable city, great zoo and museums and it's manageable. I live in the Rittenhouse Square area now. DelCo varies by where you are...I work in Chester, not such a nice area, but there are plenty of nice areas in DelCo.

You think you will miss the beach but in the Philly area EVERYONE goes to the Jersey Shore. and I mean EVERYONE. It's like an epidemic, and it's really not that far away.

Also closer to amusement parks which I LOVE haha....Six Flags Great Adventure, Dorney Park, Hershey Park, Sesame Place (if you have kids!).

DC is just 2 hours south which is nice, and NYC is about 1.5-2 hours north (depending where you're coming from exaclty), also nice. Where I live is about 3 hours to my parents house on Eastern LI.

It's definitely less expensive than LI (and I live IN the city!). The things I miss most are diners, pizza, and bagels. honestly. other than that, I like it!

Let me know if you have specific questions about the Philly area & Delco specifically!

Wow, thanks so much everyone for your responses. You have no idea how nice it is to get such positive responses and to know that Im not in this boat alone!

A bunch of you mentioned areas like the main line area that we are really interested in and you also brought up points that are true-- how many areas are similar to LI and how the Jerz shore is the big thing-- FH's rents own a small house just outside of Ocean City, so that is nice. Also, Im graduating in May with a NY State certification to be a school counselor so if I end up moving to PA, I will have to take TWO exams to become certificed in PA- TOTALLY *****!!!! But gotta do what we gotta do. Over the next few months, I might be FMing some of you with specific questions and stuff. Again, thanks again for all the thoughts and input!

FH and I felt the same way, but we just bought land in Jim Thorpe, Poconos, PA and we are building our dream house for 1/3 of what it would cost here! My parents also bought land abot 2 blocks away so that makes it easier, but the area is great and we can't wait to move there! Good Luck!

Jim Thorpe is a really cool place, very historical and also full of great outdoor activities. The river and the mountains offer great rafting and mountain biking if you are into those things. I personally like to browse the shops and grab some dinner

I don't live in PA nor do I plan to move there, but I did spend 4 years there for college. My school was in Lewisburg, PA, which is right in the middle of the state. I couldn't ever imagine living there full time, central PA is rather boring IMO. However, I think the Philly suburbs are much different and much livlier, go and visit some areas and see where you are comfortable.

Bucknell??

Yup! you too??

No but had many friends who attended and I was just at a wedding not too long ago at Rooke Chapel.
