PA girls or girls moving to PA...

Hello! FH and I are trying to figure out where to move and it just seems like LI is not going to work for us. We dont think we can live a comfortable lifestyle while still being able to travel and have nice things on LI. So we are considering moving to PA-- his parents live there as do some of our friends. Wondering where people live, if you live in PA or if you are moving. And is it a really hard adjustment from LI? Not only will I really miss my family, but I'll really miss the beaches too!!! Im scared to make the change! Any input would be greatly appreciated! TIA :)

Hi Debi's mom, Thanks for the response! We arent looking to move as far as Lancaster- although I do have a good friend who lives there. We are hoping to move to the Philly suburbs (Montgomery County or Delaware County). I guess my biggest concern is leaving LI, the place I've been for so long-- even though LI has its cons, it has so many pros-- im afraid that I wont find anything about PA to love!

Hi, Michelle!!! Well, eventually,Debi and Fred want to move to Long Island, where Fred's parents still live. Debi likes the beach. Fred probably likes the fishing, better in Long Island. Mary MOB

One of my best friends in this world lives in Chalfont PA. I think its considered a suburb of Philly. It is quiet and nicely priced. IMO close enough to the city w/o feeling like you are living downtown. I'd say its about a 30 - 40 minute commute into downtown Philly. There is also a train station right in the center of the community. I highly rec. giving it a look

Where is FH family from? I am from the Leghigh Valley which is about 40 mins north of Philly and about 2 1/2 hours from LI and about 1 45 from the city. My sister lives in Manyunk which is like Hoboken. What are you looking for? You could go to Havertown which is a suburb of Philly and that would give yout he suburb feel with out being hte city. What type of place are you looking for I'd love to help! I LOVE PA I went to Hofstra on LI and stayed since but I would go back to PA in a 2nd. I agree with you that the houses are ridiculous and you can get so much more in PA. FM if you want more info.

Jennifer, my Grandmother's Sister, lived and worked in Manayunk; She had a restaurant there. She, Alice, and her Husband, Pete Karas, are buried in Roxborough. I've been doing family research on them; I also have friends in the Lehigh area. Mary MOB

do you go there often to get an idea of what the lifestyle is like. Since his family lives there why dont you go there and stay for the weekend. FH has a house in the poconos that we stay at on the weekends sometimes, and by staying even just a few days, i get a good idea of the lifestyle there

My FH has friends who live in a town called Bristol, it's like 30 mins away from Philly I think but not too far from South Jersey. Houses there are pretty cheap, it's not to far from Levittown, PA I think.

I'm not sure where you live on LI now, but I feel like where I live in NJ and that area of PA is comparable to Suffolk County areas, like sorta quiet, main street traffic areas, close to major highways, with the comforts of home like Target, chain eateries, etc. yet better because the city of Philly isn't as far as NYC, ya know?

Well, we are looking into areas that are very similar to most towns on LI...just minus the beaches. Were not looking in the Poconos or places that are very rural. Where FH grew up is King of Prussia and not too far from Manayunk...so he pretty much had the same type of lifestyle growing up as me, except he had to go to the Jerz shore every weekend for the beach and I just had to drive 15 mins. In addition to missing my family, Im goign to miss the beaches so much!

Thanks AllyDrew...I agree many areas in NJ and PA are very similar to Suffolk County. Where in NJ do you live? We are also interested in the Monnouth County area and also Cherry Hill.

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...

LI has its pros but it does have a lot of cons. #1 being housing prices and #2 being congestion. Unfortunately it is forcing alot of the younger generation (us) out which sux!

Anyway, I had the chance to get away for awhile (moved to Las Vegas) and I swear I'd never move back! Everything was so close...supermarket, my job, etc, etc, not much traffic, it was great! So many LIers/NYers never leave here and they dont know what else is out there!

Anyway, we moved to NJ due to FH job and he hates it here but it is not long term. Dont get me wrong, NY is a wonderful place and I love the city.....but I think it is great that you are considering leaving. You have nothing to lose!

PS - My friends live just outside of Philly and love it!

I love PA in general, especially Philly. People are incredibly friendly and just all around more neighborly.

I would love to move to PA. It's just too far away from FH family.

I did, however, convince him to move to NJ with me!

It's a start!

I don't live in PA nor do I plan to move there, but I did spend 4 years there for college. My school was in Lewisburg, PA, which is right in the middle of the state. I couldn't ever imagine living there full time, central PA is rather boring IMO. However, I think the Philly suburbs are much different and much livlier, go and visit some areas and see where you are comfortable.

lol yeah poconos is very rural and very quiet. I like it for 2 or 3 days but after that i have to go home hahaha.

My hair colorist moved to philadelphia, and bought a huge house for a great price. She actually commutes to the city 3 or 4 days a week for work

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...

We're going to be moving to PA about a year after the wedding. I have lots of family in the Horsham, Doylestown area. I think that's Montgomery county or near there. I really like it there. The houses are gorgeous & inexpensive, schools are good, shopping is Great. Plus it's not far from LI, about 2 hours. Yea, no beaches, but we can afford an inground pool if we live there!! Plus there's tons of pool clubs..
It's definitely a change from LI, but not so extreme and you won't be so far that you couldn't come home to visit lots. I'm in PA at least one weekend a month visiting family and we really like there. Fh wants to move more rural, like poconos, but we compromised on this area.

Re: PA girls or girls moving to PA...

Thanks so much girls for all of your thoughts/input on this! Jenn04, thank you for reminding me that there is a world outside of LI! I know there is and sometimes I get caught up worrying that no where else will be good enough! One minute Im open and the next Im scared to make a change. I guess its human nature, but its nice to know that others have experiences or know people who have experiences that they can share with me!
