A panic attack is a sudden bout of intense fear or anxiety that causes frightening but not life-threatening symptoms such as a pounding heart, shortness of breath, and the feeling of losing control or dying. Usually from 5 to 20 minutes long, a panic attack may be triggered by stressful circumstances or it may occur unexpectedly.

The body has an automatic fear response that prepares you to either cope with or run away from danger. A panic attack results when this 'fight or flight' response either overreacts or becomes activated when it is not needed at all. During a panic attack, your nervous system reacts as if you are facing a life-threatening situation, even though you may not be in danger. This response causes alarming physical symptoms and feelings.

Panic disorder is diagnosed when you have repeated panic attacks, you worry about having another attack, and you avoid places that you think may cause one. It is possible to have panic attacks without developing panic disorder, and panic attacks may occur with other anxiety disorders.

once in a while I get them...after thinking about things too much

I get them. I went to 11 different doctors before I found out it was panic/anxiety. I had no clue what was wrong with me. I went to heart doctors, stomach doctors, neurologiest, etc, etc. The best thing you can do is to find your trigger, what is settign this off. From there you can learn new ways of dealing with that situation. In my case, it helps for me to say aloud 'this too shall pass' and talk my way through it. A doctor may be able to prescribe you medication if you want. I really don't use the medication, b/c the effect of it isn't immediate, so why bother. You can try taking a herbal relaxation pill called valeriun root. It is similar to valium but non addictive. You can get it in CVS for when you feel anxious it will calm you down. Also a great book that I got was called Don't Panic. It is wonderful, it goes over all the aspects of a panic attack, symptoms, causes, treatment, etc. I highly recommend it.

I get them occasionally at night when I cant fall asleep...I live by Valeriana Root extract. It is a natural herb that calms your heart and nerves...try it...if that doesnt help I suggest that you see a doctor.

vitamins will totally help this.

get yourself some complex B, magnesium citrate, and L-theanine. these will all help you reduce anxiety.

it really stinks - cause majority of anxiety is mental. maybe you should also try meditation, or working out - something to release pent up stress becfore it overwhelms you.

feel better

I too, suffer from panic attacks. It is the worst feeling in the world, but you it gets better. Once you figure out what causes it, there are a million breathing excersices and mind activities you can do to prevent them and help to get you through them.

you know what... call your doctor....

It's no shock that brides go through this... sure, there are medications but there are also therapists, and ways to handle it at home... journaling, deep breathing ..... etc...

Hey Jeanine,
It sounds like anxiety to me. My FI had anxiety attacks and he saw a Dr. who prescribed him Lexapro. He has been on them for two years and hasn't had one since. He has had no side effects what so ever! FI had palpatations as well and when he described the attacks he would say that it was because he was thinking about how he was breathing and how his heart was beating and caused him to panic. You should see a Dr. It can't hurt.

I get them too sometimes. I've become such a nervous nellie. Now that I know what they are, I handle them, and it kind of goes away w/o starting if that makes sense. I get hives too which freaks me out b/c I'm so scared of getting them on my face/lip come the wedding day! I'm going to try these vitamins though - thanks!
