Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

Did anyone's parents have a strong reaction once you moved in with FH or DH? I've been with FH for almost 4 years now & we are finally moving in together. My parents are all worried that I'll never visit them, which is so weird to me considering I moved out of the house right after college and it's been almost 7 years that I've not lived at home. I have to keep assuring them that I'll be coming home, I think they're having a hard time with it. Thanks!

my parents didn't express any concern when I moved out - in fact my Dad always said he'd help me pack my bags - and he did

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

My parents were completely cool about it. In fact, I wan't going to move in with FH when we bought our house. But my mom sort of packed me up and pushed me out the door. (My brother moved home and he was sleeping on the couch - so when I moved out, he got my room which is okay with me.)

FIL's have no proof I live there and we'd like to keep it that way. They'd boycott the wedding if they found out. (FFIL did it to FH's brother...)

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

My dad's initial reaction when I told him that FH asked me to move in was 'go get me a drink before I have a heart attack.' Then he said he'd rather me live with a great guy than marry a bum.

I told my mom that we were moving in together about an hour after the fire dep't had put out a fire in her kitchen so that the trauma of me moving in w/ FH would be far less considering what she had just been through (she had always told me that she would rather I wait until I got married. Oh well )

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

my parents were OK with it, though they would have preferred we be engaged first (that came 2 months later). His parents didn't know we were living together until we were engaged, and his mom still flipped out a bit. But she said her peace and then left it alone.

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

Mine FLIPPED
We got engaged and got an apartment. The did the whole disappoinment, living in sin etc bit. My dad even said to me 'I thought when I walked you down the aisle you'd be a virgin.' Mortifying.

They have gotten past it and accepted it but will not visit our place til we are married.

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

They're not against my FH, it's really since I'm moving to New Jersey which I think might be the issue. They think since I'm further away that I won't visit, which is just crazy! Thanks girls!

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

You are moving out of state? well that is totally different than moving just in with your FH. Of course they are upset about that. I highly doubt that the 'sin' part is upsetting them. You will be hours away now. that is a HUGE change for you and them. Make a plan to come at least once a month and invite them to your new place every few months too. They feel like they will see you only at holidays- that is the issue.

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

My parents didn't care, his didn't either, I think they figured it was the next logical step, since we had been dating for 9 years. They were even cool about both of us moving back to my paretns, when the parking at the apartment got ridicoulous(my FH's car got hit 3 times in 2 months, hit and runs), and we decided to ahve a house built.

Re: Parents & reaction to us 'living in sin'

I was out of the house to begin with...so I'm not sure it really phased them...

FYI: in the uptight Victorian age...engagements only lasted 1 month...and it was acceptable to have sex when you were engaged...so if your parents have a problem...tell them to catch up with the 19th century or that you are going to move the wedding date up...
