People that work in the city....

Original post by MrsTC

Are you nervous that anything will happen again in the city? There are so many reports lately that there is increased terrorist 'chatter' and I read today in Daily News that the probability of another attack is high. I work in midtown down the block from the Empire State Building and I am seriously considering finding a job in NJ once we are settled in our house. I get chest pains from anxiety all the time and it brings back feelings from 9/11.

eta - I also work near Penn Station...and will be taking NJ transit into Penn once we move...and the Republican Nat'l Convention is in August and Penn has been stated as a 'possible' target.

But then, people were afraid of a bomb to New York. Then again, our fears just seem more real, because there was already one attack. I have the same fears, but there is nothing we can do but go on with our lives

I am on 35th and 6th - I can either go to Queens with my parents or I can go to NJ with my hubby!

What would be a good meeting spot? I would say somewhere far enough away from midtown....like the Ferry to NJ on 34th and 12th...

I work in Chelsea and was here on 911. I am fearful of another attack, especially since DH is now working on Long Island...I feel kinda alone.

I really just try not to think about another attack happening here in NYC. DH on the other hand always talks about how he hates that I am in NYC everyday.

I think if you were to set up a spot, you would have to do it away from the 'crowds' ... Say if uoi intend to go to the ferry at 34/12 ... meet at a resturant on 33/11 just so you'll be sure to actually 'meet' the person you are supposed to meet, you know. Once at the ferry location it would be INSANE to find anyone ... Just a thought

Don't ever really think about it. Can't live life in fear as far as I am concerned. I work in NYC and love being here (well not at work but in NYC). If it is meant to be my time - I don't think there is anything I can do about it. When you dwell on it and really think about it - it can get scary but I just never do. As far as planning - both DH and I said after the blackout we should pick a meeting place (we still haven't) and definitely walk the bridge again. We waited too long on the blackout and wish we did it right away - it wasn't too bad of a walk....long and tiresome but all in all not too bad - at least get out of the city and figure it out from there. Plus my mom works at a restaurant in LIC - so we can always hang out there and wait.

I worry more about the LIRR and how the fact that I could just be blow to bits or maybe not depending on where I sit on the train.

I do this too. I was talking to one of my friends I ride the train w/ this morning about this, especially since the comment on the news this morning about the summer threat of attack. Plus, my FH works for the LIRR and I hear all the things that they find that the local ppl dont hear about.. it's frightening.

If its my time, it's my time. I cheated it once and gained a chance to live. If he wants me, here I am.

I agree 100% w/ this too. If it's your time to go, and your number is up, there is nothing anyone of us can do about it.

I took the ferry from 34/1 to LIC during the blackout ... it worked pretty well. 9/11 I hung around until the trains came back up.

FH and I just spoke about it. his friends owns a gas station right over the 59th Street bridge. If the attack is up here we will meet there and then go back to my mom's house in LI or my sister's in Great Neck. If the attack is downtown I will go home.

Stupid me - on the blackout we forgot about the ferry and walked the bridge - meanwhile I work on 33/Park - the ferry is so much closer than 59th street! Plus it leaves you off in front of my mom's restaurant!!

I am not nervous. I have to come to work everyday - I have no choice!! I cant live in fear everyday because there is nothing I can do to stop what might happen.

I agree with you 100%.

I work closer to the bridge but I had to pick up FH's mom on the way otherwise I should have gone the bridge route. FH took the bridge then had to walk the 20+ blocks once in Queens back to Hunters Point for the car.

Re: People that work in the city....

Here's ours for a Chaotic Event (sudden and in par with 9/11)

-Do NOT come into the city for me - Jim works in Long Island.
-I will be at my office if I deem it safe to be so or my alternate location
-If I deem the two locations unsafe I will be in Jersey. Main land America, not an island.
-DO NOT try to call me for at least 4hours, but if you are aware of the situtation, be aware I will NOT follow the crowds. I will shut off my cellphone.
-If you're in the city (rare, but it actually came into play at the blackout) and my office is deemed safe to you, find me there.
-If Im not there and it seems reasonably safe, look for me at the alternate location, where I will check no matter what.
-After four hours time, contact my father for further information (outside calls worked better on 9/11 than local)
-If contact is not possible wait at 2 hour intervals, leave msgs when possible.

We also have plans for
-Non-Chaotic Events
-Weather emergancies
-Preventative City Measures (lock down)
-Illness
-Home plans for the same listed above.

I carry with me at all times:
Umbrella (really helped on 9/11)
Small light
Water
Medications
Sweater or scarf no matter WHAT the weather.
Cash (helped tons on 9/11)
Hairbrush
Id information.

why wait two and a half years and then only three months...they are NOT going to do anything when we are expecting it...
though, madrid supposedly was on high alert...

I don't worry about it. They always have that terror alert going up.

Alright I am officially freaked out... I have been watching this topic all morning and then I just get an e-mail from my company:

The building will be conducting fire drills during the week of June 1st, including activation of strobe lights and audio alarms. Drills will be conducted floor by floor during both the daytime and evening. Please make every effort to treat these drills as if they were real emergencies. Your cooperation will help us enhance your safety in the event of a real emergency.

Yes, its nerve-racking at times to be here but we have to hope that it won't happen again ... it's very hard not to live in fear.

I agree....but we all should have a meeting place with our significant others....its important too...
even if its not terrorist related...how can we forget the blackout....? another reason to have a meeting spot...
