People that work in the city....

Original post by MrsTC

Are you nervous that anything will happen again in the city? There are so many reports lately that there is increased terrorist 'chatter' and I read today in Daily News that the probability of another attack is high. I work in midtown down the block from the Empire State Building and I am seriously considering finding a job in NJ once we are settled in our house. I get chest pains from anxiety all the time and it brings back feelings from 9/11.

eta - I also work near Penn Station...and will be taking NJ transit into Penn once we move...and the Republican Nat'l Convention is in August and Penn has been stated as a 'possible' target.

9/11 - WTC bombing

wasn't actually a bombing...

why nit pick?? does it really matter how it was worded.. ?? :eyeroll:

I was just commenting that both were major catastrophes that happened in a '3' pattern.. and wondering if June could be the '6' in the pattern..

There is always going to be chatter about another terrorist attack...in the city and in other major areas. It is something we are going to have to live with and just be aware of our surroundings. The NYPD and The OEM have been working since 9/11 on disaster plans and I beleive have a pretty tight reign on anything major happening. You can never protect yourself again a lone terrorist though.

Regarding the Convention. The Mayors office, NYPD and OEM as well as all major businesses in the area have been working together to ensure the safety of the people. There is going to be a huge police presence and everything going in and out of Penn will be closely monitored.

I'm not saying nothing will happen but I think that the right people are aware and are taking the necessary precautions.

Alright I am officially freaked out... I have been watching this topic all morning and then I just get an e-mail from my company:

The building will be conducting fire drills during the week of June 1st, including activation of strobe lights and audio alarms. Drills will be conducted floor by floor during both the daytime and evening. Please make every effort to treat these drills as if they were real emergencies. Your cooperation will help us enhance your safety in the event of a real emergency.

Your not alone!!

I just got this email just now...

Five Times Square Update

This is part of an on-going series of communications, which provides you with important information for weekday events in the Times Square Area.

As part of the City's ongoing emergency response preparedness, at approximately 4 PM today, the New York City Police Department will conduct an 'Emergency Response Drill' in the vicinity of 42nd Street to 44th Street, Broadway to 9th Avenue. It is unknown how many police officers or the number/type of emergency vehicles that will be participating in this drill. Impact to our people should be minimal-street crowding due to on-lookers.

Here's nerve-racking (and slightly stupid too).

After my office relocated back into NYC (Broadway & 55th) we had just settled in when they sent out notice that the building was having a fire drill. This really didn’t bother us too much. The bosses had required our new office to be below 10 stories high (this was my old company) so most of us felt safe.

We all got the notice. To paraphrase it said “We will be running simulated fire drills this week. During these drills there will be smoke that will be filtered through the ventilation system and into the various floors”

Wait… SMOKE? in the building and during working hours? Our office had a fit. They finally agreed to move the ‘smoke’ simulation to the weekends. I remember THAT stupid note too “Unfortunately, we did not take into factor some of the building’s tenants who were so closely affected by the tragic events of September 11th. We feel that perhaps smoke drills would not be appropriate during business hours”

Ya think?

We had two fires and two forced evacuations in that building. All of those times, fellow coworkers and I were blocks away as quickly as possible. It was too soon for us to deal with that kind of stress.

PS: If anyone leaves work around 4pm, I would suggest leaving a little early due to the fact they might close the subway stations for a little bit as part of the drill...
