Are you nervous that anything will happen again in the city? There are so many reports lately that there is increased terrorist 'chatter' and I read today in Daily News that the probability of another attack is high. I work in midtown down the block from the Empire State Building and I am seriously considering finding a job in NJ once we are settled in our house. I get chest pains from anxiety all the time and it brings back feelings from 9/11.
eta - I also work near Penn Station...and will be taking NJ transit into Penn once we move...and the Republican Nat'l Convention is in August and Penn has been stated as a 'possible' target.

I am not nervous. I have to come to work everyday - I have no choice!! I cant live in fear everyday because there is nothing I can do to stop what might happen.

Re: People that work in the city....
yes- FH doesn't work in Manhattan so, on 9/11 & even during the blackout, I felt so lonely & helpless.
I'd like to work in Westchester, but it won't be untill after the wedding if at all.

I am nervous about it, but what can we do! Our wedding is the day before the republican national convention and we are leaving a week after our wedding for our honeymoon! We live in the city- I work here (in times square) and FH works on Long Island. I am really worried but what can I do?

I work in the heart of Times Square (42nd & 7th) and I cringe everyday wondering if I'm going to make it home each day after I leave in the morning. It's definitely on my mind, more so now then ever.
I heard on the news this morning while getting ready for work, that terrorists are planning something this summer. Not to mention in August when the republican national convention is coming to NYC. From what I hear they are going to stop all trains and search them all before they enter Penn Station, and that getting to work is going to be impossible..
I wish it was 1970 again, when life was good!

Re: People that work in the city....
I was convinced after 9/11 that I wouldn't continue to work in NYC .. yet 3 years later, and I'm still here.
For months after 9/11 I would have panic attacks at random times when I'd come into NYC.. I was terrified of being on the train and in Grand Central (I live in Westchester). Even though I wasn't directly affected per se, I was truly fearful that something else would happen. And I still fearful .. VERY fearful .. but I don't let that fear rule me. I try very very hard NOT to think about it
As Hbradio said, I just cannot live in constant fear... none of us should have to!
My FH hates that I work in NYC .. he wants me to find something local after our wedding. He worries about me so much (I love him for that, but I wish he wouldn't!) I am very worried about the next few months, though

I work blocks away from you!! 43rd and Broadway!
BTW, was it the 1970's when the son of Sam was on the loose and the big blackout with all the looting?? There is always something- in the 80's it was the cold war. Well not the 90's. But here we are and its terrorism. There is always something haunting this city.

Re: People that work in the city....
I work in midtown directly across from the Empire State Building - and yes I worry. FH and I have meeting spots. After the blackout I am confident that I can walk back to my home in Queens from work if I need to. In my opinion there's not much I can do but be prepared. FH and I talked about putting together bags this weekend to bring to work with all the things we think we would need if something happened - minus the steel case to hide inside to protect myself. But seriously - no matter where I go to work I'll be in NYC until we move out of here so there's not much I can do and I don't want to give in to my fears. I think - no I know - that I would feel differently if I had children.

Re: People that work in the city....
Yes, I am worried about it... in fact I'm preparing a little survival kit to keep in my locker... while I am still living in LI, I arranged a meeting spot with family; once I am married, I will have to arrange another.
I work in midtown and travel to and thru Penn Station daily... I have already seen NYPD on board LIRR trains and while I'm thankful that they are present I still can't help to think that they will be ineffective.
Do any of you who work in the area of 46th and B-way want to arrange our own meeting spot? This way if we are stuck walking anywhere, we will at least a group of us doing so.

Please! There is always something!!! Throughout history there have been threats...And these current threats have always been there...It's just that they are more publicized now...

Yes, its nerve-racking at times to be here but we have to hope that it won't happen again ... it's very hard not to live in fear.

I think this is a fantastic idea .. my FH does not work in the city, nor do most of my friends any longer .. and I am always concerned about how I would manage by myself if something occurred. It would nice to have our own little group to help each other
I'm on 7th between 51st / 52nd ..

I think Son of Sam was in the early '80's, but I was a little kid in the '70's, so what I remember from that era was it was innocent times for me. Life was good!!
I rather have a big blackout and a cold war then the haunting of terrorism each day, never knowing when it can strike and where. Things are getting worse and worse and more dangerous as the years go by...

Why not arrange two meeting spots, one uptown a ways in case downtown is impassible and one downtown in case the problem exists uptown.....

That's true...We now know what these maniacs are capable of...In the 80's we were afraid of the Russians...But still...

Re: People that work in the city....
I was also one to say 'I'm not working here anymore' after 9/11, but NYC is where the money is - or at least the little I get anyway! And I really like my job, I've been here too long to uproot myself over a terror threat. I have to admit, I was extremely nervous about working here in NYC after 9/11, but after a while, it just became a part of my daily routine. It's kind of alarming that I'm so jaded about the threat of a terrorist attack - but I have a meeting location with DH's dad who works a few blocks from me, and I'm pretty prepared for the most part. Let's face it - no one expected what happened on 9/11 that morning we came into work - and it was the most frightening day of my life being here in the middle of it. However, we can't hide at home waiting for something bad to happen just because we hear warnings on the news, so I've moved on with my daily routine. The threat is always there for those of us who work here I think, the trick is to not let it consume us. We need to be aware, but not hyper-aware to the point where it disrupts our life. Theres a huge difference between being informed and being excessively paranoid. I for one refuse to live my life in fear of some terrorist threat - that's like giving up, and I'm not about to do that. So there's my rant for the morning

Re: People that work in the city....
Im on 46/6 and work 42 floors up.
This is gonna sound sick but.. well I survived 9/11 and realized there's nothing I could have done personally to have avoided the things I went through. No one to blame but the terrorists.
I worry more about the LIRR and how the fact that I could just be blow to bits or maybe not depending on where I sit on the train.
The City? It doesnt bother me as much. There's just so much going on and so many people I'd be a nervous paranoid wreck if I let my mind wonder too much.
We have contingency plans. They were put in force while I sat at home recovering from my injuries. Most would laugh at me if I listed all that I've done to 'prepare' to the best of my abilities.
We also have directives for working hours in which an emergancy can occur. Where I'll be if this or that happens. How to reach me, when to try to reach me and where he'll be or won't be.
They all came into play actually during the blackout and it was scary for me being so high up in the air again but I worked through the plan and it worked.
Our office also has contingency plans. I do not lose the card they gave us with numbers and office relocation sites. I keep one in my purse but not too far that I can't just pull it out quickly, Jim keeps one in his wallet (at my request) and the last copy is kept in our home.
Worried? I used to, now Im just prepared. *shrug*
If its my time, it's my time. I cheated it once and gained a chance to live. If he wants me, here I am.
