Please let me know what your payment terms are with your photographer..or at least how they are broken down... you do not have to use your ACTUAL rates if you do not feel comfortable providing that information... as long as you're numbers provided are relative to the break down, that will help just fine...
My potential photog wants: $1K immediately Balance due ten days before the wedding
I ask because my FMIL is concerned that nothing is due on the day of so whats to say the photog will show up AND nothing is due when album is ready for pick up..

ours was 1000 down,
A payment of 1500 about 6 months later, 2k the week before the wedding, 500 when we pick up our proofs or albums

We had a $1000 deposit down and three - four payments of $700. The balance was due when we picked up our photos and video.

I have the same exact terms as you. $1000 down the balance due 2 weeks prior to the wedding. Honestly I look at contracts for a living and FH is in law school and we initially had some concern but the reviews looked fine and the contract was well written and even if you still don't feel comfortable you can always add to your contract.
In my opinion it feels that most of the items that you purchase for the wedding you need to pay in full before you actually receive the service so i think its more the norm than the exception.

right, but unlike every other vendor besides video, their services don't end until the day of the wedding....

I agree. Our balance isnt due until we pick up our photos either. This is just me, but Id never use anyone that wanted the whole balance paid before I got my pics. You hear so many stories of places going out of business or in rare cases, companies just up and disappearing. Not saying that to be mean. Just something to be aware of.

Our terms are 30% deposit, 50% due July 1, and 20% due Sept. 15.
Honestly, I never thought about it. I'd rather have it paid in advance especially since we're going on our honeymoon right after the wedding. I imagine the vendor wants to be paid before you go anywhere too. We're meeting with her again before the wedding at the venue so there is extra 'work' involved on her end there.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see a problem with it.

My photag has similar terms... We just booked on Saturday and had to pay 1000 dollar deposit, and I believe most of the balance is due before the wedding, and about 500 (total is ~$5000) dollar is due after wedding. I was skeptical at first of that payment schedule (plus, this particular photographer takes a very LONG time for the albums), but I guess they can do it.

Everyone I spoke with and the one I eventually booked with wanted something to the extent of 25% to book 50% day of and 25% when all pics are done and albums picked up.

I had to pay all but $400 before the wedding. We had a contract they clearly stated what we were getting (prints, proof, albums, DVDs) including how long each photographer and the videographer we being paid for. I had no problems. It is common for the photographers to be paid the majorty of their payment unpfront.
