ask to see albums of events (not just albums that showcase the 'best work') and ask what the final number of proofs the couple had to choose from. this way you get an idea of the good shots to overall taken ratio.
examine each photo. start making mental notes of what you like and don't like about each and why.
things you want to find out right away: - the photos reviewed, are they the ones of the actual photographer (i don't know if you are going to a studio where sometimes they will show works of other photographers, not the one you would book) - when do you get to pick a photographer (if going to a studio) - are proofs included - are negatives included (this was my #1 concern) - how many photographers (does this person work with an assistant) - how many hours are included - what is the cost for overtime - what is the breakdown of album costs (if interested, we are doing our own) - what is the additional charge per photo development in various sizes (4x6,5x7,8x10) in case you find you want to add more to the original 'package'

Ask to see proofs from a wedding they just shot - it will give you a good idea of what their work is really like.

If its a group of photographers, ask who shot each album and if there is someone whos work you really like, make sure that you can request that photographer in your contract.
