physical theraphy questions

Original post by Espo22

Well its been almost 4 weeks and my ankle is still swollen, not as bad as when it first happened but the top part is still pretty swollen. I am so annoyed because for the first time today I tried to put heels on and i really can't even walk in heels at all, not even one step. To bend my foot that much hurts ALOT. I am so mad and frustrated right now. Out of all times for this to happen, couldn't happen at a worst time. I DONT want to wear flats for my wedding, i want to be able to dance, its something i love and to not be able to really do it at my wedding will S*CK!!! whenever i think of my wedding i always think about dancing most of the night and having such a great time.

Even now, i am trying to figure out what to pack for when i leave friday but meanwhile i cant even wear most of my shoes. Theres one pair that have a low platform heel that feel OK but doesnt go with anything i have. Do i wear flip flops with everything? Ive sacrificied so much with the wedding, and i finally get to go away and just leave all the stress behind but meanwhile i have to deal with this BS. I know theres worst things in life, but i dealt with so many ups and downs during this planning processing, i want to be carefree on my wedding day, having to constantly worry about my foot just annoys me to think about. UGH just so upset about this right now so needed to vent, having my moment and yes i know i should be thankful for other things but sometimes you can't help it.

I was reading more online about sprains and how bad it is depending on your symptoms. Well considering I tore a few ligaments and read that if its minor swelling goes away in a few days. If its grade 3 the worst kind it will take 4-6 weeks well im almost at week 4 and yup still swollen. Ive been told by others that i probably need physical theraphy and reading info seems like I might.

My question is with 3 weeks of physical theraphy, would that make a big difference? for something like this how long would i have to go to physical theraphy. I am going to make a 3rd appt with the doctor but anything else that i can do to help it heal quicker?

Re: physical theraphy questions

physical therapy can be a wonderful thing, but your injury has to be ready for it. You can't just start PT when 'you' are ready. It's all based on your degree and location of injury and what needs to be built up. Not for nothing, flip flops have NO support at all and will probably just make things worse. I hate to say it, but if your doctor didn't give you a boot to wear, you're supposed to be wearing (at the least) sneakers. Generally the more muscle support you have, the better. Have you been icing and elevating?? I don't really like to give medical advice on public forums and to people I don't know, but i suggest you speak to your doctor about this. I hope you are in the hands of a good orthopod. HTH

oh ok really i had no idea. I'll call my doctor and ask him what he suggests regarding PT. Well i am will wear my aircast even if i do wear flip flops. Trust me i realize how much i need to wear it lol but yeah the other day i went out for a bit just to get something and had my flip flops on without the cast since i just went to the store and i felt the difference. Thank you very much, i do appreciate it

Actually, I agree about the flip flops. I didn't think to mention that. When I was wearing flip flops a lot my foot was really bothering me even more. And, it's true...you have no support. I used to love wearing them, but with all the walking with my commute, I had to stop.

Actually, if you don't mind, would you be able to give me a recommendation? I'd appreciate it.

I remember you said that...that's probably best, especially now. I miss being able to wear them more, but I noticed my foot was killing me all the time. And, I had to worry more about my ankle going out on me when I was walking. They make me scared with all the steps too. It got to a point where I feel more comfortable and secure with sneakers on...have more support.

Re: physical theraphy questions

This happened to me and PT really helped. I believe I had a 4th degree sprain.
I know this is the last thing you want to hear but you shouldn't do anything that will cause you problems for the rest of your life. It might mean dancing a little less at the wedding. It's been years but every now and then I get shooting pains in the area and I noticed that my ankle is not as strong as it used to be. Sometimes I'll wear heels and my foot just doesn't feel right. I've also had that ankle turn over --- I guess it's just weak. And I babied that ankle -- I'm a teacher and it happened over the summer when I don't work.

Even if you can't dance as much as you'd like ---You will still had a fabulous time at the wedding!!!! It will still be magical and beautiful.

hugs to you

oh wow it didnt say anything about 4th degree on the site i looked up.

Yeah i am just so frustrated that this even had to happen. I know some say it couldve been worse but why did anything even have to happen in the first place . I definitely am going to try to do as much as possible for this to heal quickly.

Yeah, i mean it wouldn't be me not to dance alot but i will still have an amazing time im sure

thank you

Re: physical theraphy questions

Denise,

my FH has been going to PT for a few months now for his shoulder. the PT helped a lot but he is still not 100% so the dr is going to give him a cortizone (sp?) shot right into his tendon to reduce swelling and kill the pain.

maybe this is somehting you can ask your dr about if the PT doesnt improve things for you before your wedding?

feel better

yeah i am going to ask. Another LIW'er asked her Fh and he said right now getting the shot might rupture my foot so to wait closer to 6 weeks after injury which is around my wedding. I will find out my options

thank you

Physical therapy really does work..I had problems with my legs. I had an injury where every time I took a step I was in pain. I went 3x a week and I was great in 2 wks. Keep putting ice on it to keep the swelling down and really try to stay off of it let it heal...

when i did HR you got insurance through the month of your termination date. the fact that they are paying you May in April's check though makes me a little leery.... I would definitely check on that ASAP. They should have told you though.

i agree about flips I've been wearing them to work and they are so comfy but i still get twinges in my stupid foot and I know it's because there is no support. If i were less vain I would do an ace bandage with the flip flops, so I think you wearing the aircast is very smart. Any walking around in Vegas though I'd wear sneakers. And definitely do the whole RICE thing. It ***** that your foot is still swollen .

my PT also said to soak it in warm water and epson salt.

rest, ice, compression, elevation. when I hurt mine people were like RICE!! and i was like w t f is that?

yeah i never got an MRI which was stupid. and i will wear heels and it's just weak still so I'm actually scared to walk and I'm always looking for uneven streets. crossing QB scares the crap out of me

You should get insurance; did they at least tell you about going on COBRA or are you just going on fh's?
