Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....
When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.
My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod
Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........
its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'
What do you girls think???

What's fashionable to one person might not be to someone else.
Lets please try and be tactful when we make comments about something that someone else might be wearing.
THAT is why I originally said that this was a sensitive topic.
don't get frustrated
i understand you!!!!!!

what does any of this arguing over the history and detail of the painting have to do with anything? kinda pointless. and wow, altho i suspected this might happen to this thread, who wouldve thought pickups would make ppl so hot and bothered.
I should have been an art history major.

Re: 'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???
I wasn't arguing about history, it just bugged me to see that cited when it wasn't correct. I'm pedantic, I can't help it. I did point out that pickups weren't new, just that dress didn't have pickups!
The funny thing is that I actually think that most of today's bridal gowns WILL age well. Most of the silhouettes popular today are very Fifties in look. I'm a bit older than most of you, and I remember back in the Eighties that we loved Fifties style. It's classic. So I think we'll be fine in fifteen or twenty years. Yes, of course some things will look silly, but who's to say which? Each one of us likes or dislikes some styles of gowns today, but we don't usually speak up about it because there's undoubtedly some brides here who are wearing that style and won't be very happy about it. Your choice of gown says a lot about you, and criticism of your choice seems very personal.
Can't we all just get along??

i think some girls look great in dresses w/ pickups, its a very princessy look and can be very elegant. this being said, pick ups just arent for me!!!
ditto, I think they look great on people. They certainly fit for people. They def. are a bit much for me b/c I am having hawaiian wedding. But again I think it is a personal preference

Chances are we are all going to look at our wedding pictures in 10 or 20 years and they will all look dated. Wear what makes you happy, ultimately it's your choice. Don't let anyone else sway your decision

That's a bustle, not really pick-ups. Not that I'm arguing that they're new, they're not. But that isn't a wedding dress--just because she's wearing white it doesn't mean it's a wedding dress, lots of young, unmarried women at that time wore white dresses to advertise their virginal status. (Not that they would have ever put it so bluntly.) It's a skirt that's bustled in the back and most likely was swagged in front. Also, I've never thought that was a happy painting. The woman doesn't look like she's enjoying herself, does she? Also, the idea of a married couple's 'First Dance' at their wedding reception is a modern thing.

Thank you

Re: 'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???
I dunno, I think the reason the 80's ruffles sometimes looked dated is becuase they were so overdone. Many gowns today have ruffles, but in a more subtle fashion than 20 years ago.
Pick-ups can look really classy.... they can sometimes look like they popped out of a painting. Does that mean that all pick-up gowns will stand the test of time? Heck no. But then again, most non-pick-up gowns won't either...
I almost got a pick-up gown... The gown I did get has a dropped waist and box pleats... I love the look, but also think the dropped waist may look dated 20 years from now...
But I'm not the amazing kreskin, and I can't tell the future, so who cares!
ps- I'm also the owner of some pretty fab turquoise ruffled prom gowns...

The only prom gown I regretted was one that was too 'classic': at the age of 16, I looked 40.I love my bright pink one....Ohhh and the one that came in 2 pieces.
COME ON GUYS....Think about it: Dark lipstick Glitter eyeshadow Baby pink lipstick Long sleeved wedding dresses POOFY hair Hair done up in those strands Tiaras & hair clips
There are so many things that change every YEAR. We ALL are going to do something that we will look back on & say 'remember that?' Hopefully, our marriages will last long enough & we will remember the dress fondly.

I love them! i think they make you look more like a princess!! If you love it thats all that matters..who cares what other people think! and as for looking back in 30 years and laughing..who cares..what matters is that you feel beautiful on your wedding day!! also who knows.... the way styles go in and out..they may make a comeback in 30 years! just like bellbottoms, leggings, capris (used to be called knickers!!) ..trendy doesn't always mean bad...also some bustles actually copy the idea of pickups!!!

I love the look of them- I actually thought I'd end up with one just cuz I liked the pictures. Once I tried it on, it was not for me. But I think brides look beautiful in them!
I wouldn't worry about the 'trend' at all! At least it's not like the headband with the poofy veil!!! THAT was the worst 80's bridal look!!!

Objectively, my SIL I think may be right...some looks simply hold that feeling with time, and some don't. The debate, is which of those looks do and which may very well not.... thats what I was torn over
And the answer is that there is no way you can predict what will and will not be in style 10 or 20 years from now.
I choose not to live for a moment in time in the future when I may or may not be looking back on my pictures in 20 years. Anything can happen between now and then. Whether you get pick ups or not (and as you know it's not as simple as 'pick ups or no?' because each dress is entirely unique), just make sure you get a dress you love. That's all that matters as far as wedding gowns go.
I do understand your question -- I am just saying I'd go with the dress you love, whether or not it has pick ups... My dress happens to have them and I really never gave it much thought past 'Wow, I really love this gown.'
Hopefully you'll find the one - in whatever style you want - soon!

Funny you say that.. almost a year ago I started a post about what will be the shoulder pads and excessive lace of the 2000's
I think they are very 'trendy' and people will look back and giggle at them one day. I know some girls love them... but some girls also liked huge shoulder pads in 1984 and we giggle at those today too.
PLEASE Do not compare my dress to huge shoulder pads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is kind of rude considering shoulder pads are the UGLIEST thing in the world, my pick up dress is not...Who are we to predict future trends...
I agree...some people can be so rude. About half the girls on these boards have a pick up dress...rude of this poster to compare pick ups to shoulder pads. Some people giggle today about off the shoulder dresses!!!!!!!!

I wore pick ups, as did my SIL and thought they looked gorgeous. JMO. keep in mind that almost everything is a 'trend' for a period of time, even sleeveless. I'd get what you want and like, enjoy THIS moment, not the moment you'll have 10 years from now while looking at photos
** Never felt more elegant or timeless
that is one of THE most stunning dresses I have ever seen...gorgeous!

I just found it interesting that we started to analyze whether the woman looked happy or not in the painting and whether it was in fact a wedding, etc. It was outta left field.

Oh... snap!!!
Classy!
Agreeing that something is a trend does not a personal attack make....
ETA: as I was telling my pal K and E in an FM, I would have LOVED to wear a strapless dress but I would never subject my wedding guests to my chubby sausage arms. So Id like to go on record (since my opinion seems to matter ) that although strapless dresses may also be considered trendy, I do enjoy them and wish I could have jumped on that trend
