'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

Original post by AmorPeruano

Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....

When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.

My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod

Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........

its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'

What do you girls think???

Funny you say that.. almost a year ago I started a post about what will be the shoulder pads and excessive lace of the 2000's

Link about 2000's styles

And a handful of ladies said pickups.

I think they are very 'trendy' and people will look back and giggle at them one day. I know some girls love them... but some girls also liked huge shoulder pads in 1984 and we giggle at those today too.

PLEASE Do not compare my dress to huge shoulder pads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is kind of rude considering shoulder pads are the UGLIEST thing in the world, my pick up dress is not...Who are we to predict future trends...

I agree...some people can be so rude. About half the girls on these boards have a pick up dress...rude of this poster to compare pick ups to shoulder pads.
Some people giggle today about off the shoulder dresses!!!!!!!!

Hmmm can't see why you would think this poster was singling out your gown (which is quite lovely btw). I just think she was using a trend of the 80's (shoulder pads) as a comparison to the trends of today (pick-up gowns). I did love my Bea Arthur like shoulder pads back in Jr. high!

I love how pick up gowns look on tall woman. The dress I wanted was a pick up but being the fidget I am when I tried it on I looked like a slice of lemon merengue (sp?) pie

Hey I decided to go for a classic European bride look. Some people might think I looked magnificent in a fitted lace gown and traditional mantilla and others might think I looked like Mary on the half shell. I loved how I looked but who knows what I will think 20 years from now.

I thought I looked fab at my prom and allow me to say the hot pink mermaid sequence with taffeta bottom was a hit in 1992. Two years ago I used my prom dress as a Halloween costume (I went as Carmen Miranda)

Who knows, who cares.

Oh and off the shoulder dresses create a beautiful neckline. Mel's dress was SPECTACULAR!

Oh God and enough with that Renoir pic...I feel like I am in an art history class for cryin' out loud

I have to be honest I think it depends on the style of the dress- some look really pretty with pick up but personally I wouldn't wear it.

its not a dress that makes the person its the person wearing the dress, so when it comes to ANY style, if you can pull it off then who cares, just work it in whatever...i see some girls (and no not for a wedding but just in general) who will get all fixed up and all dressed up and you know what its nothing striking, ill see other girls dressed down not all dolled up and they'll work it and pull it off.

I look at pics of my moms wedding and wanna talk about trends, the woman wore the two buns on the side like in star wars, but you know what she looks gorgeous and she didnt even really wear any make up...the hair might be a bit silly now but all i see is her face and how beautiful she looks.

If i have to worry about what im gonna think 30 years from now then maybe i should buy a futuristic type dress huh lol.

and like bon(beachbum) said, if you even doubt it a bit and its a concern then dont go for it, go for something you are 100% sure about

oh for crying out loud!

just let this one DIE ladies! this is getting CATTY

'Saucer of Milk, party of 20, your table is now
ready!'

agree to disagree and some ppl like pick ups and some don't. simple. no need to get catty and single out particular girl's dress styles and such--this is just a heated debate and it should end here and now. that's it...it just getting uglier and uglier for NO REASON!

I think about this in regards to HAIR, too. I think a lot of the styles i like now/popular styles may look ridiculous in a few years. When it comes down to it, i *hope* i look back at my pictures and remember the joy i felt, instead of cringing at my dated couture :)

ETA - i agree that a lot of today's styles will be tomorrows 'shoulder pads' - that, unfortunately, is just the nature of fashion/trends.
