'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

Original post by AmorPeruano

Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....

When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.

My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod

Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........

its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'

What do you girls think???

Stop being hung up on what others think

Exactly.

Couldn't have said it better... it's your day, do what you want!

Honestly, its not about being hung up about what OTHERS think....this is my family. Im tight with my Mom and my SIL, and yes, I DO care what they think...in other words....these are not strangers opinions Im giving a ------ about, you know what I mean???

I understand but at the same time if I fell in love with a dress and it was THE one then i wouldn't change my mind just because others(YES MOM, DAD WHOEVER) didnt like it. You are the one who has to wear it not them. If you arent sure about the dress to begin with then i wouldn't even stress about it now, but if you absolutely love it then that is a different story.

That's a bustle, not really pick-ups. Not that I'm arguing that they're new, they're not. But that isn't a wedding dress--just because she's wearing white it doesn't mean it's a wedding dress, lots of young, unmarried women at that time wore white dresses to advertise their virginal status. (Not that they would have ever put it so bluntly.) It's a skirt that's bustled in the back and most likely was swagged in front. Also, I've never thought that was a happy painting. The woman doesn't look like she's enjoying herself, does she? Also, the idea of a married couple's 'First Dance' at their wedding reception is a modern thing.

Posted by beachbum05

That being said though, my FH has this poster of Renoir's 'The Dance in the City' from the late 1800's that is of a couple's first wedding dance....

Obviously it's not a 'trend' - its been a style for a LONGGGGGG time!!!

Hmmmm, now that Im looking at it....she kinda doesnt look happy......and maybe that is a bustle?????

LOL all paintings from back then they look like that

My dress doesn't have pickups. They're not for me, but I like them on other people. To each his own!

...if in thirty years your biggest worry is how dated you wedding gown looks, then god bless.

My thoughts exactly!! If in six months your biggest worry is how dated your wedding gown looks... As long as you feel beautiful, that is all you will remember!!

It def.wouldnt be MY BIGGEST worry, not sure why anyone would think it would be.....but lets all be HONEST here....we would ALL like to have a classic, timeless elegance to our pictures, I would think....not a ' Oh god, what was I thinking?'......THATS what I think about......

Classic, timeless, elegance is subjective... and to be honest, I don't care what I will think about when I look back at my pictures... as I said before, as long as you FEEL beautiful, that is all you will remember!!

I wore pick ups, as did my SIL and thought they looked gorgeous. JMO. keep in mind that almost everything is a 'trend' for a period of time, even sleeveless. I'd get what you want and like, enjoy THIS moment, not the moment you'll have 10 years from now while looking at photos

** Never felt more elegant or timeless

first of all i dont see how people are saying this could be a 'touchy' subject since you said you LIKED them...but anyway

my mom said the same thing about pickups too
i liked them but when i tried teh dresses on with them it made my big arse look even bigger - so it just wasnt a choice for me

i think that when you are buying a dress, you know when it is the right one - maybe you get the feeling or you keep going back to the same one or you just dont want to take it off!
i think you should go by what you like now and if it worries you that i may be a trend, go for a more 'classic' style dress

Ignore them and try on as many different styles as you can tolerate.

I started out with this Bonny gown with silver and lilac accents. I planned my purple theme around the dress colors (plus I love purple)

Then I fell in love with this gown - lace & ruffles in one dress.

And the dress I finally bought that almost had me in tears when I tried it on at RK bridal with a veil
Tons of pick ups

I doubt that I will EVER look back at this photo and think 'Wow, my gown looks dated. I should have gone with the A-line'

My dress has pick-ups and i look DAMN GOOD IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It isn't for everyone, I just happen to look better in a fuller skirt and thought the other dresses were just too plain for me. I really think it depends on body type.

Funny you say that.. almost a year ago I started a post about what will be the shoulder pads and excessive lace of the 2000's

Link about 2000's styles

And a handful of ladies said pickups.

I think they are very 'trendy' and people will look back and giggle at them one day. I know some girls love them... but some girls also liked huge shoulder pads in 1984 and we giggle at those today too.

PLEASE Do not compare my dress to huge shoulder pads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is kind of rude considering shoulder pads are the UGLIEST thing in the world, my pick up dress is not...Who are we to predict future trends...

My comments were not directed towards you personally, just a general statement about the frivolous nature of this worry...

I would never pick my dress based on what others think, even my own Mom and sister, but that's just me.

When I first saw pick ups dresses I was like no way, but they I tried on a few dresses with them and I loved them. If they are 'uncool' in 20 years so be at.

I actually have a 'pick up' dress! But I never really thought about that... I just love my dress and I'm so happy with it now.. if my kids make fun of me for it, then oh well! What can you do? I have enough to worry about planning the wedding...

I think that no matter what, whether it's our bridesmaid dresses or wedding dress... everyone will definately find something to laugh about in their own wedding pictures later on! It's hard to tell what will be in style, as styles change so much! I remember the thread on the 08 board where we posted our parents wedding pictures... and some of them were hilarious! Guarunteed that will happen to some of us...

I say whatever dress you fall in love with, buy it! If the dress makes you feel like a beautiful bride on your wedding day then it doesn't matter what people will say in 20 years!

i have a pickup dress also and i love it...itll be fun to look at pics years from now and make fun of it bc the style changes lol...but as for now i love the look and think it looks pretty on me hehe

LoL. Okay, well then...Ive gotten everything from my Mom and SIL are right to....'I wore pick ups and I look damn good in it' LOL

I liked some of the pick up gowns that I tried on, thats why I created this post...somehow people didnt read my original question and things got out of hand, LOL. But the truth is, we can all like something that others don't...its really about the look your going for on your wedding day I think.

I dunno, I always dreamed of being an old lady and watch my granddaughter one day taking out my wedding picture the same way i took my grandmothers picture out of an old box and thought...my God, she could walk into this room again today looking like that and she would be just as elegant, just as tasteful, just as classy.

Objectively, my SIL I think may be right...some looks simply hold that feeling with time, and some don't. The debate, is which of those looks do and which may very well not.... thats what I was torn over

(Sorry - I took back my previous post. It just got me a bit annoyed. )

In any case, I think that if you are really concerned about whether or not it will look 'timeless' and you have an inkling in YOUR MIND that it will not, don't get a dress with pick-ups.

Except the point is that at one time, people thought big shoulder pads looked great. Women loved them because they felt powerful and slim in them--the wide shoulders made your hips look smaller. Fashions change.

What's fashionable to one person might not be to someone else.

Lets please try and be tactful when we make comments about something that someone else might be wearing.

THAT is why I originally said that this was a sensitive topic.

what does any of this arguing over the history and detail of the painting have to do with anything? kinda pointless. and wow, altho i suspected this might happen to this thread, who wouldve thought pickups would make ppl so hot and bothered.
