'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

Original post by AmorPeruano

Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....

When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.

My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod

Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........

its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'

What do you girls think???

I personally LOVEEEE pick up dresses. mine & my flower girls was a pickup as well.
Pix in bio, however it depends on what kind. there is the 'pick ups' & then there is the 'buncheled pick up' i odnt like anything too ruffled, but thats just my opinion.

We're all neglecting the fact that we cannot predict what will and will not be in style 20 years from now.

I still say wear what you like now. My best guess is that it will all be out of style eventually.

That being said though, my FH has this poster of Renoir's 'The Dance in the City' from the late 1800's that is of a couple's first wedding dance....

Obviously it's not a 'trend' - its been a style for a LONGGGGGG time!!!

Why worry whether or not it'll be in style 20 or 30 years from now? You're not dressing for that time.

Pick-ups have obviously been around for a long time as shown above.

I had thought the same thing & REFUSED to even try them on. Then, after nothing felt 'right'...I tried one on & that was IT.

They are really flattering & may get dated...but so do the most traditional styles....my cousin had a classic... with LONG sleeves.

Funny you say that.. almost a year ago I started a post about what will be the shoulder pads and excessive lace of the 2000's

Link about 2000's styles

And a handful of ladies said pickups.

I think they are very 'trendy' and people will look back and giggle at them one day. I know some girls love them... but some girls also liked huge shoulder pads in 1984 and we giggle at those today too.

i think it really depends on the style of the pickup. I've tried on a few that were AWFUL and some that were absolutely stunning.
And it's a trend that designers are still sticking with for next year.
I'm sure no matter what brides of our time wear, our kids will look back and be like 'wth were you wearing??'

I don't think we'll all be looking at our wedding gowns as much as we think in 20 or 30 years...

Ha! I sure hope not! Wear what makes you happy today.... you'll find something else to make you happy 20 or 30 years from now

That's a bustle, not really pick-ups. Not that I'm arguing that they're new, they're not. But that isn't a wedding dress--just because she's wearing white it doesn't mean it's a wedding dress, lots of young, unmarried women at that time wore white dresses to advertise their virginal status. (Not that they would have ever put it so bluntly.) It's a skirt that's bustled in the back and most likely was swagged in front. Also, I've never thought that was a happy painting. The woman doesn't look like she's enjoying herself, does she? Also, the idea of a married couple's 'First Dance' at their wedding reception is a modern thing.

...if in thirty years your biggest worry is how dated you wedding gown looks, then god bless.

My thoughts exactly!! If in six months your biggest worry is how dated your wedding gown looks... As long as you feel beautiful, that is all you will remember!!

You can never go wrong with a classic look. It will never go out of style...I stayed away from that trend (even though it's really pretty)

ooh, this might be a sensitive topic.

I personally think that no matter what, you'll look back on your pictures in 20-30 years and laugh at SOMETHING you wore or a pose you made....

So, I think to each their own. If you like it, I think you should go with it.

I agree.

I mean, trends are just that- trends! So what can you do?

The pick-ups are NOT for me at all-- just not my style, taste but I think they look nice on other girls.

I try to go with classic but sometimes it doesn't always work that way.

Re: 'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

I personally am not into the pick up look on a wedding dress. I think it looks like a wedding cake. I hope I am not offending anyone. That being said, my cousin just got married this past Friday and had a dress with pickups and it was GORGEOUS! It was very different though as it had satin pickups but over the satin was tulle pickups which made it look very elegant. She brought her dress from Kleinfeld's so I can only imagine what hte cost was. Like I said, I am not a fan of pickup dresses but this one was beautiful b/c it was a bit different than the others. i am a demetrios bride and am not crazy about their pick up dresses but whatever manufacturer my cousin used, they did a great job.

Personally pickups are not for me but someone else can look wonderful in a dress like this.

And as someone stated before in 10-20 years there will always be something you look back on and say wow, that's old or what was I thinking. It's just normal for things to be a fad and time to change.

If this is the style that you like and looks very nice on you than go with it and who cares about what all of us or anyone else thinks. It's your special day!

HTH.

It def.wouldnt be MY BIGGEST worry, not sure why anyone would think it would be.....but lets all be HONEST here....we would ALL like to have a classic, timeless elegance to our pictures, I would think....not a ' Oh god, what was I thinking?'......THATS what I think about......

YOU are still the one who has to wear the dress and love the dress, though. You can respect their opinion AND disagree with them.
