'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

Original post by AmorPeruano

Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....

When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.

My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod

Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........

its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'

What do you girls think???

I actually have a 'pick up' dress--a style I didn't initially want. I tried it on though and fell in love with it.

I think you should just go with what you like best regardless of trend. It doesn't matter what it will look like in 20-30 years because guaranteed, there will be something that you will look back on and laugh at.

Looking back though, trends are cyclical so more than likely what you see now was a trend some time in the past.

It shouldn't matter what people think about the style...the important thing is that YOU like it.

pretty!

i agree that styles will always go in and out. look at leggings now. no one would wear them 5 years ago and now they're everywhere!

i think some girls look great in dresses w/ pickups, its a very princessy look and can be very elegant. this being said, pick ups just arent for me!!!

I agree. My friend's wedding dress had pickups and she looked amazing, however, I didn't like them on me.
I do think no matter what dress you have now, we'll all look back 20 years from now and laugh or feel it looks dated. Hair, makeup, jewerly, fabric, etc,....these all change so much over the years.

I love pick-ups. i think they are so pretty and flattering. My friend had a pick-up dress about 5 years ago. It was gorgeous then and gorgeous now. My Mom wore a short mini-dress for her wedding in 1968. She had a short pouf veil. Her MOH, my Aunt wore a mint green Jackie-O style suit with a mint green veil. The pictures look so cute! Of course they are dated, but that is natural. There is no way to predict how something will be perceived in the future. Concentrate on now, not thirty years from now. And if in thirty years your biggest worry is how dated you wedding gown looks, then god bless.

my mom said the same thing. she said i looked i belong on top of a wedding cake lol. personally, i liked the pick ups on photos - but it didn't look good on me in person. oh wells. a more simple look looked better. pick ups aren't actually new though. i asked the lady at kleinfelds if they were still hot and she said not really, they will be making their way out soon and the next trend will come soon enough.... but like others said, no matter what look you have, you will still look back and say 'what the..'. If you like the pick ups, go with them. i like them and they add something different to the dress.

honestly, yes.. I do believe the pick-ups are very trendy.
But you know what, who cares. If you love it, then go for it.

I agree with pretty much what everyone has been saying....get what you love! Who cares what anyone else thinks. And honestly who cares if in 20 years from now your dress is not 'in style' - no one's will be! Some new trend will be out and all of our dresses of today will look outdated.

I ended up getting a dress with pick ups...always thought I would want a simple A-line gown. My dress was the 1st one I tried on and myself, my mom and 2 sisters were instantly in love with it. I tried on a good 10 more after that and none of them compared. I didn't feel like a bride in the A-line dresses - just felt like I was in a bridesmaid dress in white. It wasn't 'bridey' enough for me...so everyone has different styles and tastes - you should get what you like best!
I love A-lines on other girls - just didn't love it on me. Never in a million years thought I'd have a dress with pick ups...but I did and I loved it!

You can see my dress in my avatar pic

That's not me though - an actress on Days of Our Lives just wore it on the show! I was so excited...and I wore it first!!!

I'm personally not a fan- I think I look like an ice cream cone in those sorts of dresses...and I think its a trend that will come and go...JMHO

I don't think that what you'll think of your dress in 20 years should be a consideration in picking our your wedding gown. Chances are, you're not going to wear your gown again in 20 years and you won't spend every day looking at the pictures of yourself in it. How you feel about it NOW and how you look and feel in it NOW are what matter.

If you don't like pick ups, don't wear them. If you love them, go for it! If you want to wear hot pink bicycle shorts with a ripped t-shirt, go for it. That's the beauty of it being YOUR wedding - you can do whatever you want.

I'm not a fan of pick-ups. I tried a couple of them on & I looked absolutely ridiculous. I have to be honest though, I have seen pictures of many other women wearing them & while I've not liked some of them, some girls really do look very pretty in pick-up dresses.

If you like the style on yourself, go for it! Don't shy away from it just because you think you'll laugh at yourself in 30 years. I agree with what was said above, no matter what dress you choose, there will be something about your wedding phtos that will make you laugh one day.

That being said though, my FH has this poster of Renoir's 'The Dance in the City' from the late 1800's that is of a couple's first wedding dance....

Obviously it's not a 'trend' - its been a style for a LONGGGGGG time!!!

I like your reply to this Bonnie! I think it's a very old fashioned classic look...my dress has the pick-ups and I love it!!!!!!

I also have to say there are many different types of pick-ups and some of them I love (my dress of course ) and there are some that I absolutely hate!

you are TOO funny!!

I completely agree with everyone, go with the dress that you love wearing, and that flatters you. Don't worry about trends......I have an A line dress, but I think some pick up dresses are gorgeous!! And IMO I don't really think ANY trend could be as awful as the 80's poofy sleeve!!! with the trend in question being on the skirt, versus on the shoulder and poofed so high its competing with your hair.....well I just see them as two very different trends, and the pick ups are much more elegant!!

I think the 'Pick-Up' dresses are very pretty and looked beautiful on a lot of brides. But I purposley would not buy one of those dresses for the exact reason you stated, I dont want to look back at my wedding dress years from now and say 'What was i thinking!' since it is such a unique style. That's why Id rather play it safe and go with a wedding gown that more simple and elegant and will look ok even years from now...but thats just my opinion.

Who cares if you look back in 20 or 30 years and laugh at your dress and say 'what was I thinking?' As long as you're laughing at your dress and not your choice of husband there are worse things than wearing a trendy dress! Chances are in those 20 or 30 years, you'll have made many wonderful memories and have plenty of new pictures hanging on the wall where wedding ones used to be.

I hated pick-ups in the dresses in pictures and so did my mom. Once I started trying dresses on, though, we both fell in love with 2 or 3 that had them. It just worked on those dresses for me. I wound up choosing one of those and my BM dresses have slight pick ups as well (the girls helped choose it, too).

There are plenty of styles of dresses I don't care for, but I wouldn't say that just because I don't like them, they'll be out of style in 20 or 30 years. In that amount of time, I may change my mind about them. Wear the dress that you love and that works for you. Other people don't have to love it, and you don't have to love it 30 years from now. If we all loved the same thing, we wouldn't have so many wedding gowns to choose from.

I TOTALLY AGREE!
