'Pick ups' .....the new 1980's ruffle???

Okay so Im really curious for all your opinions....

When I went to try on wedding gowns, I tried on a couple that had 'pick-ups' on the skirt and I thought they were really pretty.

My Mom said she thought it looked like when she bunches up curtains on a rod

Then to make matters worse, my SIL is convinced that being the 'pick-up' style is fairly new.........

its a Trend that we are all gonna look back at in pictures 10 years from now and be like 'what in the hell was she thinking???!!!!'

What do you girls think???

i think some girls look great in dresses w/ pickups, its a very princessy look and can be very elegant. this being said, pick ups just arent for me!!!

ooh, this might be a sensitive topic.

I personally think that no matter what, you'll look back on your pictures in 20-30 years and laugh at SOMETHING you wore or a pose you made....

So, I think to each their own. If you like it, I think you should go with it.

I agree! Some pickup dresses are very beautiful and look lovely, but I personally prefer a more streamlined skirt for myself.

That being said though, my FH has this poster of Renoir's 'The Dance in the City' from the late 1800's that is of a couple's first wedding dance....

Obviously it's not a 'trend' - its been a style for a LONGGGGGG time!!!

i agree this is a touchy subject bc ALOT of girls are getting pick up dresses.

ANd i have to agree with Bon, no matter what there will be something we look back at 10-20 years from now and laugh at, whether its our make up, hair, dress or whatever. Not EVERYTHING is timeless.

I bought an a-line bc its what i wanted, and girls who bought pick ups bought it bc its what they want and as long as were happy with our choices then that is all that matters. If i had to contemplate everything i ever wore bc someone might not like it or years from now it wont be stylish then i would drive myself crazy.

Luckily there are SO many styles out there to satisify everyones taste would be kind of boring if everyone got the same style

I think it really depends on the dress. I tried a few dresses with pick-ups and I didn't feel like they were my style but then sometimes I see a pic in a magazine or on here and I'm amazed at how nice it looks on someone else!

Try EVERYTHING you possibly can, even something that hasn't come back yet - poofy sleeves? Hehe... you never know!

I actually have a 'pick up' dress! But I never really thought about that... I just love my dress and I'm so happy with it now.. if my kids make fun of me for it, then oh well! What can you do? I have enough to worry about planning the wedding...

I think that no matter what, whether it's our bridesmaid dresses or wedding dress... everyone will definately find something to laugh about in their own wedding pictures later on! It's hard to tell what will be in style, as styles change so much! I remember the thread on the 08 board where we posted our parents wedding pictures... and some of them were hilarious! Guarunteed that will happen to some of us...

I say whatever dress you fall in love with, buy it! If the dress makes you feel like a beautiful bride on your wedding day then it doesn't matter what people will say in 20 years!

I'd stay away from trends...unless you are absolutely in love with it and you think it is classic enough that the look will transcend time in your wedding pictures.

Honestly? I agree with your mom. Some look better than others, but to me some look like the dress has terrible static cling.

I think you should try on EVERY different kind if dress and choose what you like best. If the one you like has a trend design, who cares! The only thing that matters is if you feel beautiful in your dress.

Personally, I've begun to really like the look of pick-ups. And even if its one of those that you'll laugh at later, those are the best pics lol If you like the look, go for it!

Who cares if you look back in 20 or 30 years and laugh at your dress and say 'what was I thinking?' As long as you're laughing at your dress and not your choice of husband there are worse things than wearing a trendy dress! Chances are in those 20 or 30 years, you'll have made many wonderful memories and have plenty of new pictures hanging on the wall where wedding ones used to be.

I hated pick-ups in the dresses in pictures and so did my mom. Once I started trying dresses on, though, we both fell in love with 2 or 3 that had them. It just worked on those dresses for me. I wound up choosing one of those and my BM dresses have slight pick ups as well (the girls helped choose it, too).

There are plenty of styles of dresses I don't care for, but I wouldn't say that just because I don't like them, they'll be out of style in 20 or 30 years. In that amount of time, I may change my mind about them. Wear the dress that you love and that works for you. Other people don't have to love it, and you don't have to love it 30 years from now. If we all loved the same thing, we wouldn't have so many wedding gowns to choose from.

i am very anti-pickups for ME. I have seen it when trying on dresses with some girls that completely rocked the dress but for me i looked like a big marshmallow/merengue. I honestly liked only one dress with pickups and that was just the organza picked up so it was very light wispy looking but just not my thing. I think classical is always the safest route but not necessarily the most 'wow' factor at all times.

Try it on if you like it get it... as everyone said we all look back and prob. make fun of our selections 40 years from now but that happens all the time!

My sister in law spent $3,000 on her dress 10 years ago and when looking in her album i was going what the hell was she thinking.. but when talking to her i realized she had 'THE DRESS' of the season on. Never know...

I don't think we'll all be looking at our wedding gowns as much as we think in 20 or 30 years...

20-30 years from now all the styles were wearing now might be out of style, or like it constantly happens, they'll be coming back to style.

You think people in the 60's would think in the year 2007 those dresses would come back, and now its the new trendy look.

besides i am sure you all will be beautiful glowing brides and regardless of what you are wearing, that will show and you will be beautiful regardless.

Stop being hung up on what others think
