Picking Bridesmaids

Picking Bridesmaids

How many bridesmaids do you have???

Did you ask your 'old' best friend from high school? Family members?

I don't know if it's proper etiquette to ask girls who have asked you to be their bridesmaid in the past.

I want to ask just my close friends in my PRESENT life but don't want to offend anyone.

I have seven:

2 sisters
1 FH's sister
1 sister in law
1 best friend
2 nieces (jr. bm's)

I personally dont feel you should feel obligated to ask someone just because they asked you. I was in a friends wedding three yrs ago and since then we have grown apart. She will be a guest at my wedding but I don't feel we are close enough now for her to be a bridesmaid.

Just remember it's your wedding and you'll have to look at the pics for years to come, you want to be happy at the ppl. your looking at.

I have my

2 sisters (matrons of honor)
FH's two sisters
2 best friends
2 flower girls

Have who you want not who you feel you 'should' have. You hear too many horror stories of bridesmaids that never should have been asked.

I have 7:

1 MOH (my sister)
3 close friends from HS
1 close friend from college
1 cousin
1 best friend of FH
2 flower girls (FH's niece and cousin)

I had a hard time choosing. I wanted to ask one of my oldest friends, but decided against it since she has not been a good friend to me the last few years. My theory is that if I had to think about it really hard, it probably wasn't right.

I have four:

2 friends from Undergrad.
1 friend from Graduate. (Maid of Honor)
1 friend from High School.

Honestly, I have no sisters, neither does FH, I'm not close with my cousins, and my old friends from elementary schoo, HS, etc. hardly call me. We'll always have great relationships, but honestly, they are very involved in their own lives, so they showed no interest in being part of wedding, even though, I know they love and support me. My MOH is my best friend, who calls me adn supports me the most at this time. She is my best friend and I know her for the least amount of time. That's my story. Hope it helps!
BTW, evey girl I asked was flattered and honored to take part in my wedding. I think that is most important- to have people who want to be a part of your day (those people will respect your wishes the most)

Re: Picking Bridesmaids

mine were:

1 sister (MOH)
1 friend from elementary school til now who is
like a sister
1 DHs friend from HS who has become one of
my close friends too
1 DHs best friend's GF- we go out with them a lot on double dates, went on a cruise with them, and the 4 of us are really close

i think that if you really think about it deep down, you'll know who you want to be in it ... whether they are a 'new' friend or an 'old' friend or a family member- it should be the people YOU want up there with you, and people you know will still be there supporting your marriage 10 years down the road...

Re: Picking Bridesmaids

I ended up choosing 5. I kind of felt the same way you do, there were 2 girls who's wedding I was in (one a few years back and I don't really talk to her and one this year and compared to the others I don't talk to her either) and I decided to have them do something else special in the ceremony (not sure what yet).

1 Friend from High School
1 Friend for forever
2 Friends from college
1 Cousin

My friend put it in perspective for me, if you can see these people always playing a major part in your life then you should include them.

Re: Picking Bridesmaids

Never feel like you HAVE to ask someone, or are obligated. Really, if someone gets offended, ***? I mean, I could have asked so many people (like 8 total), but I knew I wanted a small BP.

I have 3 sisters. And that's all I am going with for my BP. Small, simple, less headaches, and they are my best friends to boot!

Re: Picking Bridesmaids

I don't beleive it is bad etiquette not to ask someone who has asked you. I am not having anyone from high school in my BP. Only people who are currently in my life.

MOH- sister in law
3 BM- all future sister-in laws
2 junior bm- cousin, niece
1 FG- god-daughter

BM- Grooms brother
5 GM
1 junior gm ( I'm making up roles...lol)

1 MOH - My Cousin/God Mother
1 BM - DH's Sister

That's it...didn't want the drama. Got it anyway because we asked his other Sister and not her Husband...so of course...she declined...

Why would it matter if you didn't ask her husband?!?!??!

I have:
1 Matron of honor-My sister
1 Maid of honor-best friend
BM-FSIL
BM-roommate from college
BM-friend from college

3-FGs

The friend from college asked me to be in her wedding last year, and because of that we became a lot closer than we were, now I would consider her a best friend.
Don't feel like you are 'obligated' to include everybody

Re: Picking Bridesmaids

I had 8 bms, mostly friends from college, one from childhood, one from HS, and a third from adulthood. I'm still very close with 7 of them. The 8th massively betrayed me both before and after the wedding, so not so much. (I didn't find out until about 4 months after the wedding, although I had suspicions)

Here's my advice. Don't ask anyone you are feeling 'obligated' to ask, because the one person I felt obligated to ask is the one to whom we no longer speak. I felt obligated because DH used to call her his 'sister'. It's nice to ask family members, or FSILs, or women you've been a BM for, but if you don't feel that close to them, then don't do it. They'll get over it, hopefully. And if they don't, well, then they're probably not the type of people you want close to you that day anyway.
