What do you think about it? Should it be available over the counter or by prescription only? Should it be available to women over 18? 16 and up? Any age?

Re: Plan B
By prescription, under the doctor's discretion as to the age of the patient.

Re: Plan B
I am 100% for Plan B. I think it should be available by prescription to any age woman.
The only reason I feel it needs to be through prescription is that there are many ingredients in Plan B that women could be allergic to, and also because I think that it is beneficial for a doctor and/or pharmacist to explain the correct use of Plan B and its side effects (as well as the fact that it is not 100% effective). If it was possible, I wouldn't be opposed to people being able to get it without prescription if they had to go to the pharmacist - who could explain the above. Although most pharmacists are pretty overworked, so I worry about that too.

I agree with this, but I worry that some physicians may be hesitant to prescribe due to their own beliefs and feelings.

Re: Plan B
Personally, I'm against this stuff...but for others, in the end, I believe it is best left up to Drs and prescription b/c pharmacists will be overworked/too busy and how often have I picked up some powerful stuff only to be told 'sign here' it says i explained the drug to you. just read the paper inside. [and of course i never read it]

Yeah - I have read cases of pharmacists refusing it for those reasons as well. Having to get a prescription could also prove problematic because the longer you wait, the less effective the drug is.

Re: Plan B
in australia you just have to go into the pharmacy and ask for it, no presciption needed. DH was here and we thought we may have needed it and he suggested we 'pick some up'. i said they dont do that here.

I agree! This is tricky but my feeling is the more you can work to prevent having to get an actual abortion the better. Then again some people believe that even that small mass of cells that have just started to divide is a life. But that is a WHOLE other conversation.

This is very true- doctors may not write the prescription and pharmacists may not fill it. Also I think having it over the counter provides some anonymitiy for a person who may be too embarassed to see a doctor and ask for a prescription. I do see both sides though as to why or why not it should be prescription, but it should definitely be available to all women in one way or another.

Re: Plan B
From what I understand about Plan B is 2 pills that prevent the fertilized egg from implanting itself in the uterus. They are two birth control pills. Nothing dangerous about it.
They sell it over the counter in Europe. I think it should be sold over the counter in the US as well.
It isn't killing a life since aa egg that has not implanted in the uterin wall is not a life.

Re: Plan B
I think that it should be readily available, but something should be done to stop people from using it over and over, as their birth control of choice. I feel the same way about abortion. I have no problem with it, but there are poeple who use it as birth control and have multiple abortions. I disagree with that but I'm not sure if the law should address it.

Re: Plan B
i think it should be available to women, absolutely.
with any medications i feel you should have a script bc depending on other medical issues... perhaps it wont be good for you. i would hate to see anyone have serious reactions and then people blame plan b because there was no script.
on the other hand, what if someone doesnt have insurance or doesnt have a doctor or cannot be seen by a doctor in time...the either has to have an abortion or carry full term..... when prevention could have happened.
its very tricky. but yes .. i think it should be made available to any woman who needs it.

Re: Plan B
sticky. i say by prescription and hope that the Dr explains the risks/effects and important info to the pt. if the pt goes to an emergency room or planned parenthood they should not have a problem obtaining the pill. i was a pharmacy tech for a while andi agree that most pharmacists do NOT address medication issues with pts, there simply isnt enough effort/time put in to do it. i hope that if the pt is under 18 that they will receive information on birthcontrol so plan b isnt needed again in the future. i dont know for sure, but i would think that at most commercial pharmacies, their employee pharmacists would have to distribute the medication regardless of personal beliefs, but maybe not the case or independent pharmacies.
