I have a white gold e-ring that has been dipped about 2 times already (and I've only had it since Memorial Day weekend) BUT the only reason it has been dipped this much is because 1. It was originally 2 toned gold (yellow gold and white gold) 2. In order to maintain the warranty, I have to bring in my ring every 3-4 months for cleaning and a possible re-dipping.
Otherwise, I probably would not have had it redipped until right before the wedding just so that it could be shiny. I also have a white gold chain and pendant that FH gave me last year on my birthday and it still looks fine.

Re: PLATINUM OR WHITE GOLD? your opinions
I prefer white gold.
I don't like the weight of the platinum, and I don't like the 'grayish' patina the platinum takes on after some time. I have a lot of white gold jewelry, and it really depends on the alloy used to make the white gold. I PREFER a mostly palladium alloy (almost no nickel). My rings/necklaces/bracelets have never had to be redipped, and I've been wearing white gold for 6 years.
My Grandmother's rings are 18K white gold (like mine.) She got the set in 1957, and it has NEVER been redipped. She wears them everyday, and they're good as new.

Ok people this is a never ending debate. Go with what you can afford and call it a day.
Bottom line, if you have to go into hock to buy your ring because it is platinum, then you can't afford it and perhaps white gold is a better alternative. If you have a platinum e-ring and you can afford platinum (which means NOT paying on a credit card that you won't pay off for another year or two) then get it.

Regardless of cost, it is a personal preference. I like the patina of white gold and the weightlessness of the metal much more than I like the grayish patina of plat and that heavy feeling. And platinum was only $200 more when FH was designing my ring so it really wasn't a matter of money.

Definitely match the band. I have 3 rings that i wear everyday, my platinum e-ring, my silver ring and my 14k white gold class ring. They are three different colors! The platinum is the msot beautiful in color, and I think platinum only looks better with age. The white gold is only 2 years old and it's definitely taking on a yellow tinge. You CAN tell the difference!

Of course it is a matter of preference, but for people who are indecisive and possibly on a budget, money is a MAJOR factor. FH and I got plain bands. Nothing to them at all. Retail, his band cost $1600 for a size 11 4mm comfort fit band in platinum. Mine would have been $1400 for a 5 1/4 band in platinum. White gold was significantly less. However, we have a great connection where we were able to get our rings at cost (if not less) and were able to pay $840 for BOTH platinum bands (yes they are platinum - the stamp is on the inside). If we had no connection and we had to pay retail there is no way we would have platinum bands. We simply cannot afford it.

i would say match your engagement ring. but i wouldn't recommend white gold. it turns yellow after a few years. i had white gold earrings and they turned yellow after 2 years.

Re: PLATINUM OR WHITE GOLD? your opinions
i would say match your e-ring. i like white gold and i have had a few pieces of white gold in my time and have never had them to be redipped. my mother has a white gold band from her 1966 wedding and has never had it redipped and it is still whitish colour. i think it depends on the alloy content. find a ring you like and if it is in your budget then get it. if you really feel strongly towards platinum then get that if it is in your budget.

I just must add
I have been wearing white gold for years and have all different necklaces, rings, bracelets etc.. and I have yet to have to have any of them re dipped EXCEPT one very light bracelect that FH got me for my 18th birthday (Im 24 now) and that was only once.
So I guess what Im saying is that I think people are exaggerating a bit when they say white gold needs to be CONSTANTLY redipped.
that needed to be said.. thanks

sorry.. had to add again.... thanks for saying that, people think its' what you can afford'... its not about money, fh and i absolutely can AFFORD platinum, but thats not what i or him wanted.. its a matter of prefeerence.. not how much it costs.
