please be honest....

please be honest....

Kind of long…sorry.

My husband's family is really big on showers. Baby showers in particular. Old Italian family, etc. He's got tons of women (aunts and stuff) on his side. His grandmother is one of 13 children so of course there are lots of female cousins, etc. As my husband and I have been together for 10 years, I am very close with all these women, and they adore me and have always been amazing. They all live in New Jersey (info you'll need later!) On his mom's side is just his mom really and a close friend of hers that is like family.

My family on the other hand = very small. As far as showers go the only people on my side are my two sisters, my mom, nanny, and then a good handful of close friends that all live in Manhattan. At my bridal shower, I had it at my home in NJ. I felt it was central to everybody somewhat - my family at the time was living in Westchester, NY , and everybody else was pretty much in Jersey. It was a nice shower, though I felt weird having so much to do with it. I arranged the caterer, seating, schedule, guest list - things like that (my mom is sort of absent this way but that is another story). Anyway, I only had a very limited handful of Chris' family there because I felt the space was too small and I wanted it to be intimate.

Well the whole family is so excited about our baby - and all the women are saying, I hope Jen has a real shower - we have to welcome the baby in properly, etc. I hope she doesn't have another 'VIP'shower. (which I feel really badly that anybody thought that in the first place), but anyway. They are all being really cute about wanting to celebrate this little baby. The only thing is, I don’t want anybody to have to spend a ton of money. My mom recently moved to the Cape permanently, my sister into a new home last month, and my older sister is buying a new house next month. Everybody is strapped for cash, and I don't want to have this thing at a restaurant and put everybody out $-wise. Please keep in mind, my wedding shower was this time LAST year! Then my wedding…all that money and gifts, and so on. So my husband is saying to have it at the house again - it will be tight, but everybody knows where it is, it's local, etc. I just feel SO weird about it. Like here is my registry - buy all my baby's stuff. And then come to my house where there will be too many people….or come to my house because I don’t want to be bothered having to go to a restaurant, or whatever. Tons of feelings I have, yet I know I have to have a shower. And I want one! I guess a big part is that again, my mom isnt' exactly like - let me plan and take over kind of person, and I end up playing that role in our family. She's not exactly stable, so my sisters and I have kind of learned to do things without her help so she doesn't get all freaked out. I just feel so uncomfortable with all this. I feel so greedy…..

What do you think? Any opinions and sorry so long!

first of all....dont feel greedy!! Your family (in-laws) sound like they are going to buy you a TON of stuff for the baby...wether or not you have a big baby shower.
Maybe your sisters can approach your MIL and ask her to help (read: chip in) for a baby shower for you. Sometimes a shower at home costs just as much as a shower out somewhere...but the time you rent the tables and chairs and maybe even a tent.

I would talk to your sisters and also have you DH speak to his mom about how you are feeling. I bet these ladies will come up with a GREAT plan for a wonderful baby shower for you!

You shouldn't have to worry about your shower. Your family and his family can talk and think of ideas on how they can do this. I don't know your estimated due date but if its not in the winter, perhaps someone can have a party in their backyard.

I am so sorry that you even have to think about this! I'm afraid I don't have much advice for you. But my honest opinion is that I don't think you should plan your own shower. I understand your sisters are strapped w/their houses and such, but WHERE are they when it comes to planning??

Also, do you think that one of the women from DH's family might decide to throw one? Any chance you could drop a hint to DH and maybe he can drop a hint to them...that you might not even HAVE a shower if someone doesn't take charge b/c you don't want to plan YOUR OWN? Just an idea.

long response..

hi there!
I would suggest that the shower be held somewhere else other than your home. You are not supposed to have any hand in this shower- sending invites, ordering food, decorating- nope- all has to be doen by others. Whether it is your sisters...or your hubbys family I dont think really matters at all. be sure to mention that if it done by his side that your mom DOES have a BIG role in it (even if it only APPEARS to be a big role)

Do you belong to any civic groups? the lions, the rotary club, volunteer firefighters or police? if so, then u have free access (or VERY low cost) to their meeting hall. that is where my baby shower was held-at aux police HQ...made to look VERY cute with blue and pink tableclothes and balloon center pieces...and good music playing.

second- I understand how u feel about people spending $$ when they have all this other stuff going on and your wedding was only a year ago. We felt the same.
Good to see but not soo great to feel. in the end , you gotta let that go. It is NOT up to u to tell people that they cannot afford to buy ur baby something. (cuz in effect that IS what ur doing)...it is up to THEM to decide WHAT to get u...and since u DO feel about this- then u will b gracious if all they can get u is a card, or a blankie, or a toy and not a huge ensemble.

dont sweat it- enjoy that his side is soo happy about this..stnad back and go along with the ride.

if it wasnt for my inlaws- there would have been NO shower for me. my parents are deceased, my bro isnt into that scene and my relatives (IN NJ!) might as well live in CHINA sinc eit is sooo far to drive into Long beach!

Re: long response..

thank you all SO much. You are right...I think I will drop some HEALTHY hints to hubby!

My EDD is Jan 25th - so unfortunately, it would probably need to be indoors and I am figuring November as the holiday month is always so hectic for everybody.

I can't do much more than say 'I agree' with the advice of the smart ladies who answered before me. I know exactly how you feel about people spending money, but if they WANT to, they will, no matter when your wedding was, or what's going on in their lives.

Re: long response..

I agree with the rest of the ladies.
They all seem very happy about the upcoming baby and the shower. They probably would love to help also. I'd def. talk to hubby about getting his Mom involved. Afterall, it's a baby for both of you And it seems to be a happy subject for everyone.

You shouldn't have to feel greedy at all. People want to do for you, so let them. I wouldn't have it at the house if it cannot fit everyone though
My suggestion is stay out of it, and let them plan it FOR you

if your husband's family wants you to have a big shower then perhaps one of them can throw it for you. your sisters can host a small shower for your family, or attend the bigger one. just tell your husband that you are not super happy with the idea of having to plan your own shower again. I don't think you should plan your own shower- that is no fun.

I think that the only thing you should worry about is carrying that precious baby. I would drop hints to your DH. If they want to throw you a shower ... they will!

I agree with the others. I don't think you should be worring about the details of your shower. Let everyone else worry about planning a shower for you.

Re: please be honest....

I think Dh should definitely say something to his mom about having the shower at one of their houses...I don't think this is a big deal at all...

My cousins is at her MIL's house...b/c of location...I would let DH handle this situation...

Re: please be honest....

I must totally be missing something....why do you have plan your own shower?

As far as your bridal shower being a year ago and your thoughts on another event for you where people are bringing you gifts.... I can relate, I felt weird at first because I felt like I had the last event in the family and then 1 1/2 yrs later, here I am with the same crowd. Someone reminded me how many showers - both kinds - I attended over the years. It was alot and still going. I felt funny about a guest list so I hardly added names - turned out DH asked one friend to help him get names for his sisters (who planned it) and alot of people were thrilled to be a part of it. So, I am sure your family and friends love you and are so thrilled to help prepare you for your baby to be. After this, your 'shower guest of honor days' are over, if it makes you feel any better. Try not to look at your registry as a list of what you are telling people to buy. They will want to get you things either way so it helps them to get what you'd prefer. I don't know if I'd know what someone wants from the thousands of baby products out there without a registry. Lastly, if all else fails, look at it as a party for your child, not yourself.

It will all be beautiful. Try not to be involved. DH can put the word out about not having a big expensive event in a restaurant and then let the ladies take over from there.

That was the one thing I said to my Mom, if there's a shower, I dont want anyone to incur a big expense with a restaurant. My SIL's did it at one SIL's house and it was wonderful.

HTH Enjoy this! I know from my own experience that you will see, no one is thinking about it like you are.

Re: please be honest....

thanks to all of you for such positive and straight-forward responses! I gently told my DH the other night that I do want a shower, but I just don't want to be involved...and if anybody should come to him on it, just please make sure to check with my girlfriend's mom (my friend is due 2 weeks after me) to make sure they don't conflict.

I feel a lot better. I think a big part of my anxiety comes from my mom not exactly being very 'mommish'- so she never really takes over and plans things for me...she gets really overwhelmed easily, and I guess I try to smoothe things over for her and my sisters to avoid any craziness. But it's not my responsibility. You are right! Thanks again!!!

Jenny--glad to read you 'sorted' this out with DH. I know what you mean about your mom--mine is the same way--My godmother/cousin planned and threw my bridal shower and my cousin is already talking about my baby shower( would love to actually be pregnant first!!!)
Glad to hear your dr appointments are going well--can't wait till we are using the same dr on a regular basis---but be prepared because I am sure I will have tons of questions
