Well I think that it depends on your crowed honey....If you know that your family is the type that just needs the music and get out of there way I think thats perfect ....if they need alittle help you might want an MC that does a little more ....
I couldnt agree with you more about the No hands up, line dancing all that cheese - I am not having that either -but thats JMO -
...If you talk to the MC and tell him look I am not looking for anything over the top with you getting involved UNLESS it really seems like the crowed needs it ....
Dont know if I helped sorry

I don't know what all the 'CHEESE' talk is about, but, I like the idea of the MC, I agree if your family likes to party they will regardless, but I think it's more formal to have someone other than the 'DJ' announce the bride and groom and the BP, plus make any other announcements that need to be made. If you talk to him and tell him what you want, any good MC will do what is asked. Good luck, deciding.

repost from what I wrote on BHB:
I agree about the whole cheese factor- MC does not equal cheese so lets stay away from that word....anyway, one persons 'cheese' is anothers rip roaring good time.
the thing is this...we are a party family...we can party in a elevator if a good song comes on, so I really just need the mc to make the major announcments and THAT'S it, so it seems kind of a waste of $500 if I get an mc and don't use them to their full capability.
I am not so sure my family would even notice if we didn't have an mc- they'll be too busy dancing...the rest of them....the most energetic MC in the world couldn't get them up to dance, so it doesn't matter.
thanks ladies.
your comment about the formality interests me Mrs. Felix....you may have a point. but I have to weigh that....thanks.

I agree that it depends on your crowd..i will be having a dance crowd and i wanted an mc, because i feel my crowd would feed off of them...however i am making sure that they are not too outspoken..only when it is necessary...when i met with my company 'classie sounds' i explained to them and they considered that when assigning me someone...i will also meet with them prior to and tell them in person..
good luck!

Re: Please help me out!
I paid for a DJ and an MC. The day of my wedding I only had the MC show up (he was the main DJ, the other DJ would have been his assistant) because the DJ had an emergency. The MC played all the songs and made announcements only when necessary (entrance, cake cutting, etc.) never once was he on the mic as a 'hype' man. He did need assistance in setting up the loops, songs, etc. while MCing - thankfully the percusiionist did that. So no, I don't think it's necessary to do both.

I think if your family can have a good time in an elevator, then no MC is needed! We're not having one because our families and friends will get up and dance. So for us, I couldn't see spending the extra $$. However if I knew they were wall flowers, then I would have to seriously consider it. I've been to weddings with and without MCs. Some MCs I have hated because they touched me and tried to pull me up to dance when I was eating. Others have been relaxed and just made announcments. At the weddings without MCs, I think the dj did a great job and kept the crowd dancing.

Just as a reminder, some DJ's will need a break (bathroom, eat, etc.), so the MC usually will cover for him, so having one also has some practicallity to it. Good luck sweetie!!!

oh hell no! there's no PEEING on my watch! LOL
more good points...though I discussed 'breaks' with the dj company I have in mind and they said they will put music to play during any. (also the dj will have an assistant as well)

That's a good point Jess. My dj will have an assistant with him to take care of things when nature calls!

Jess, I'm using Vinny, and he brings an assistant with him. He acts as the MC and the DJ. Maybe you can look into hiring a DJ, and finding out whether or not they bring an assistant with them, that will jump in while food is being served, or they have to go to the bathroom.
There's always another option.

Staying focused on the menaing of the day worked wonders...I was so happy that I cared about nothing.

Re: Please help me out!
i was at my sister's wedding where there wasn't an mc. the crowded wasn't really up dancing. at my wedding we had an mc who was FANTASTIC!!!! he didn't push to get people dancing. it helped that it was a dancing crowd. he got into the crowd. i would highly recommend getting an mc
