Please Help with Catholic Ceremony Readings and Such...

Please Help with Catholic Ceremony Readings and Such...

For those of you who aren't particularly religious, yet were (or are getting) married in the church - for whatever reason, personal to you - could you please (pleasepleaseplease) share with me the outline of your ceremony??

Which hymn(s) you used, prayer(s), reading(s)...

I am so disappointed right now - trying to find something that reflects us as individuals and represents our relationship - to absolutely NO avail.

Thank you so much....

My boss aka my unofficial wedding consultant told me she had Pable Nerudo poems read at her wedding a few years ago.

Re: Please Help with Catholic Ceremony Readings and Such...

Thanks...

Our officiant mentioned we could use poems - I was just curious about what other non-religious brides (who are having their ceremony in a church, for whatever reason) are using/or used for their readings, etc.

I've scoured the pre-cana book and to be honest, I find a lot of the passages either really offensive or just too religious - neither of which reflects us or our relationship.

That's good that you're allowed to use other readings and poems, off the top of my head some that I remember seeing are the Hand poem, the Apache wedding blessing. I found this maybe this is more helpful

I didnt get married in church but one of my readings came from the bible - it was short and sweet and made no mention of a good wife - give me a sec to find it for you!

Here's the secular one we used...the other one is saved on my computer at home, so I'll try to remember to post that one tonight or tomorrow morning!

The Art Of A Good Marriage,
By Wilfred Arlan Peterson

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.
A good marriage must be created.

In marriage the little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say 'I love you' at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
it should continue through all the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
but in the spirit of joy.

It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.

It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

i'm currently struggling with the same thing!

the readings have been tasked to FH, but yet again it's me who will have to find something

I like that Rebecca - I've seen it before...my dad had it hanging up on his fridge for years.

If I left it up to FH, he would just pick whatever - from whichever book...so as not to be 'too different'. I want the both of us to be involved in this - and I want something that reflects us, not what people expect from a Catholic ceremony. If that makes any sense...

You're so lucky to be able to use secular readings. We have to choose from the awful ones in the precana book, which are - for the most part - ridiculously offensive towards women.

Right? I was getting so heated last night, going through the books. There has got to be something else - even if you can't use secular readings - that can be read.

Wow, that site has some good stuff. I just printed out about 6 readings to go over. Thanks

It disgusts me.
I can try to talk to the priest about it but he seems kind of old school so I don't know....

Ugh.

Maybe if you went to him with examples - or a layout - of what you had in mind, he would be more willing to work with you? Once he saw that what the ceremony means to you?

Anyone else have any ideas?!

I could not be more with you!!!!!!! I am so offended by most of the readings the Pre-Cana book has to offer. I am going to try to do a little more research so that when I meet with the priest in 2 weeks I can give him some options and HOPEFULLY something will work. At that point though we will be so close that if he says no I will have no choice but to go with what is in the book. If I find any other readings I will let you know!

Jordan,

When you go to your Pre Cana class, they give you a booklet 'TOGETHER FOR LIFE' and it has the order of the Mass, reading, etc. There's a few choices for each section.

Is this the same outline for a Ceremony, or is it for the full Mass???? I'm sorry, I'm a bad Catholic.. I'm sure If I walked into a Church right now, Lightening would strike me down...

Re: Please Help with Catholic Ceremony Readings and Such...

I picked all the readings and I call them spirtual instead of Catholic/Religious. I too wanted different readings and meaningful.
For the exchange of rings we used The Hands Poem, The Apache Poem, the What is Marriage Poem...I can't remenber the others...
Anyway here is the website I used:
www.churchofancientway.org
Hope this helps

Yes, I mentioned I got that and that I couldn't find anything representative of us or our relationship. But thank you.
