please tell me why parents do this stuff (Unhappy Update at end)

I am posting under an assumed name - I post frequently on here, but I am embarrassed to let people know this about my family.

My parents are divorced and both are remarried. Mom and dad DO NOT get along. At all. Neither do their spouses, depsite being in the picture for many, many years.

My stepfather, although we've had issues in the past, has taken an active role in the wedding planning and supports our wedding and my mom's role in it. (Mom is so excited). In the past, my stepsisters (stepfather's daughters) left my mom, me and my sister completely out of their weddings, (not even invited or acknowledged as family members in any way) which hurt my mom deeply. (All is better now - lots of talking). Mom and stepdad are contributing to wedding.

My father, with whom I also had issues due to the divorce, has only recently struck up a good relationship with me. My stepmother wants only to be treated as a guest at our wedding, purportedly to not step on anyone's toes. Dad and stepmom are contributing to wedding.

My FH's parents are also contributing too, and are very supportive of, our wedding.

In the air of inclusiveness, I wanted to have all the parents (including stepparents) named on the invite, to honor their active role in supporting us in this important commitment, and because FH and I love all six of our parents very much (despite stepmom's lack of interest).

Yesterday, my dad told me he would be totally angry with me and not speak to me if my stepdad's name was ANYWHERE on the invite. He even said at one point he might not even COME if my stepdad was acknowledged on the invite.

So, what would you all do? I and my FH want all the parents named, my mom will be hurt if stepdad is left off, but my dad will be hurt if he's on. (Dad has no problem with stepmom being left off - b/c he says only biological parents should be on the invite.)

I tried the 'it's our day' line, and he said, no it's not - its your day and your parents day.

Please help. This is so ridiculous - I just can't stand the fighting anymore. (Mom and stepdad's role, or lack thereof, has been big issue with dad all along.) Any advice would be very helpful. TIA.

I know this probably isn't your favorite solution but what about 'Together with our parents' so no one's left out?

Would 'Together with our Parents....' work?

I am very sorry you are in the middle of a very difficult situation.

My FH and I tried that, too. My dad said, no, because he said he'll know we did that to acknowledge my stepdad, and he also said that his side of the family will be offended if my dad is not named on there. I am not sure how that works, but that was his story and he was sticking to it.

This stinks...you would think that they could get it together IN THE SPIRIT OF FAMILY.
Sound like Together with our families, might be the way to go.

Unreal. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I think your dad needs to grow up and deal. Together with our families is a beautiful compromise that you do not even have to do.

'along w/ their parents'
OR you can do
'Daughter of' and 'Son of' .........I'm not sure how you'd word it exactly though.........

Oh man. Parents need to get a clue! First of all, you are totally justified (and quite loving, I would say) in wanting all parents named on the invitation. Etiquette says that whoever is contrbuting to the cost of the wedding goes on the invitation, not just 'biological' parents. Ask an invitation-wording expert what to do in your case that would word the invitation to include all of the parents without actually naming them. Semantics are a wonderful thing, and I hope this gets resolved for you. In the meantime, try not to let it stress you out too much.

Maybe you can do only your dad's and mom's name on the invite and then do a program and thank everyone who contributed in that.

Hope this helps...

I agree with 'Together with our parents' on the invite and then you could thank them all - individually - on the wedding program.

If your dad is really being such a ***
the reason I like this one:
Mother and Father Remarried Jointly Issue Invitations
Mrs. Thomas K. Douglas
Mr. Philip Paul Johnson
requests the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Susan Anne Johnson
is because it lists biological parents but totally acknowledges stepdad. As in Mrs. Thomas Douglas is her new married name...

My dad was the same way. We ended up going with together with our parents. Was he mad about it? Yes. But he got over it. He was worried about what the family would think. Too bad!! Unfortunately, your dad is not giving you to many options to please him, so its going to come down to what you want, and you'll just have to stand behind your decision. Your dad needs to understand that everyone is helping and contributing and has been a big part of your life.

I know this sounds crazy, but if it comes to him being a total jerk about, maybe you could order two sets of invites, one for his family and one for everyone else just to save yourself some stress. It doesn't sound like he is really going to budge on this!!

I know this doesn't really solve the problem but I would talk to your step father. Explain to him the problem. If he is understanding, and your mom is understanding, more so than your father, than you may be able to pull off the parents thing on the invite, and then all the names in the program.

Familys are stupid, don't feel so bad. Well, easier said than done. But don't be so imbarressed. We all have wierd family problems.

I'm sorry you're going through this. My parents (whose divorce was final the week of my wedding!!) My grandmother, who I am very close with, helped us a lot financially with the wedding - so I wanted her to be included too!
THis is what we did -
The honour of your presence
is requested by
the families of

Michal XXX

and

Jamie XXX

It worked for us!

Re: please tell me why parents do this stuff (Sorry Long)

I have divorced parents, mom is remarried and three sets of parents are contributing to the wedding..

I had a lot of problems figuring out what to put on the invite- particularly a more formal invite that would say Mr. and Mrs. Jones-- meaning my mom and step dad. I did not like this cause then it meant my step dad's name was on the invite, not my moms.. Also, it would have my step dad's name before my dad's and that did not seem right either.

Anyway- I ended up writing out the regular formal invite.. at the bottom on the invite, it just listed everyone..

Blah blah blach.. marriage of their children...

Susan & Dennis Blank
Robert Blank
Susan & Howard Blank

I do not know what to tell you about your dad.. You need to work on it- Originally when I was having problems with what to write- my stepdad told me my that with all those names- he thought the invite looked stupid- so he would have been ok if his name was not on there.. Anyway- at the end of it- SOMEONE will need to be the bigger person.. I think you need to have a more heart to heart with your dad.. and if he doesn't budge you need to think of some more alternatives.

Re: please tell me why parents do this stuff (Sorry Long)

Thank you all so very, very much. It means a lot that you all shared your support and advice. Honestly, knowing my FH and I are not alone, or wrong in wanting our wedding to be how we want it, is very comforting. We felt alone dealing with my dad, and now, not so much. Thank you all.

We decided to call my mom, let her and stepdad know the situation, and ask them to talk about what they want, and then talk to my dad, if they have to. Maybe we can find a compromise. Maybe if my dad has to say the words about what he wants out loud to someone other than me, he'll realize how hurtful he's being. Maybe not. But I at least have to try. Wish me luck!!!!

Try this...

We have experienced love in our parents, our families and friends and now a new love in each other.
Happily we two...
JAne Doe
and Joe Doe
have chosen the first day of our new life together as
Tuesday, October Twelvth
Two thousand and four
at throoe o'clock in the afternoon
St. Marys Roman Catholic Chuech
East Islip, new York

You acknowledge them, but ITS YOUR WEDDING

or make up two differnt invites and send some to one family and the others to the other side (thats what I did) Divorce sucks!!!!!

I agree with this 100%.... you can write something very lovely in the program thanking everyone. I think that would be so nice.
