Plus 1 Etiquette

Original post by bluehevn22

Ok ladies...do what's the rule when it comes down to plus ones??? We have friends on our lists that are currently no in relationships...however, they will be there with other friends...some of whom are married/in a relationship. Do you give single people a plus one??

HELP!!!!

We're only inviting those plus 1's for those who are married, engaged or living together.

that's what my friend did but what about those couples who are in serious relationships but wont live together until marriage??? I just think that this segregates and DEF makes those not invited w/ the plus 1 feel really bad - I know I certainly did.

If your in a serious relationship - you get a guest.

If your single - no guest.

I am giving guest to people who don't really know anyone else. For example - my work friends I'm not giving guests because they can all spend time with each other. But a good friend of mine is single and doesn't really know any of my other friends so I'm giving him a guest.

edited for terrible grammar!

I totally agree with you. I'm doing the same. Some of my cousin change girls like changing underwear, they can come alone and I'm sure they will be fine with that. I can only do what falls within my budget.

I know it is harsh, but we decided it would be the fairest way to determine who gets a date & who doesn't (if we had the space everyone would). I don't want to make a judgment on who's relationship is serious enough to get a date & who's isn't. This way, engaged, married or living together decide for us.

You can't give everyone coming alone a plus 1 just b/c.

We only gave a handful of people +1's: Anyone in our bridal party regardless of if they were dating someone, people who we weren't sure if they were dating anyone but wouldn't know many people at the wedding and... that's it!

what if the work people are married?

If they are married husbands are invited - serious relationships are invited.

It's just the singles that don't get guests.

Married work people get a plus 1!

we just did everyone a plus one as a curtiosy. I'm not entirely sure the etiquette on this but if you feel you are going to run into the issue of your guest list spiraling way out of your range, than I would limit the +1 to those who are in serious relationships only.

I was once invited to a wedding without a guest...I had a boyfriend for a couple of months, in my mind it was a 'serious relationship' but in the bride's mind it wasn't. My problem was I knew NO ONE else at the wedding....so I ended up not going.

For my wedding, I pretty much invited everyone with a guest. There was only three or four people who were in long term relationships but not living with them so I felt I couldn't leave them out. I also knew of the people who didn't have steady boyfriends/girlfriends, that they would come solo. And some of the married ones are coming solo, so that made up for the added guests.

Unfortunately I am doing the same....if you havent been in a relationship when I started my guestlist...you are A$$ed out-lol

I just cant afford for a plus 1 for everyone.

It depends on your situation but we invited everyone with plus 1's

We did not invite singles who are not in a relationship with a guest. But we also spoke to most of them invidividually and stated that if as the wedding approached it was an issue, to let us know and we could see if a guest could be accomodated for them. We did not hear a complaint out of anyone. And we only had one person who it became an issue for. When they asked, we took into account our No's and went from there to see if we could allow the guest and we could. We also had 1 guest who was invited without a guest respond +1. Again, we could accomodate the guest, so we did not say anything. But probably should have because he is bringing his daughter.

I'm giving all my friend a +1.

However, I am not giving my coworkers a +1.

Re: Plus 1 Etiquette

not really sure the etiquette, but i will be doing the 'do unto others....' rule.

for me, that would be to invite everyone with a guest and let them decide whether or not they want to come with a partner or on their own.

more than once i was invited to a wedding without a guest; i suppose it was due to either finances or because i didn't fit the 'rule' such as being engaged or married. but attending a wedding - where everything is so lovey-dovey - and being surrounded by a bunch of married or engaged couples made me feel very uncomfortable to the point where i wished i had not attended. it's not exactly the greatest feeling when a slow song is played and you're left at the dinner table while everyone else is on the dance floor.

while i get that the night is not about me as a guest - it's about the bride and the groom - i admittedly feel hurt that a friend (the bride or groom) would not consider my own feelings of what it's like to be a single guest and at least ask me how i'd feel about it.

What would you do if you had a single friend who isnt remotely close to dating anybody? Would you invite them solo or without a guest?

I agree and I dont want to have someone else tell me whether my relationship is serious or not. The only other time I got the single invite even though iwas in a 2 yr relationship was a friend from hs that fh had never met before because she lived out of state, and it was said, listen i would rather have all my friends from hs at one table where everyone knows each other than to have two tables with half of the people that I dont know. I thought that was ok because i knew almost everyone there and we were ALL single, but to be one of the select few that is single, not knowing a lot of people, and be seated at a table full of couples is just uncomfortable for me and I prob wouldnt go.
