Plus Size Bride Help!

Hey everyone! I need help from all of those gorgeous plus sized brides out there.

I'm getting married in October 2010 so I plan on losing weight (of course!) by the time I need to start looking for gowns. I know there are plenty of choices for plus sized women but I'm still worried. I have no idea what style would compliment my figure. I unfortunately do not have that lovely pear shape but instead I have the frumpy apple shape. I have lost weight in the past (and put it back on) and I know I don't lose the apple shape easily so i'm afraid that no matter how much weight I may lose, I'm still going to be all stomach. I'm also on the short side, 5'3.

If there's anybody out there that can help me with what style of dress to go for that would compliment me, I would really appreciate it!!

Thanks in advance,
Kristan

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

Hello , I would say maybe a ballgown. I say though still try on all different types of styles because there are alot of dresses that you would think won't flatter you and once you try it on you look gorgeous. I never though i could wear a fitted gown but i tried on one and it looked the best on me out of all the gowns i tried on and i'm not the slimmest around .

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

I definitely think a ballgown shape..something fitted through the waist to enhance your shape (maybe some ruching to hide), and show some curves!

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

What I did that helped immensely was go to David's Bridal and try all the different styles on...even if you don't like them on the rack. This helped me figure out what looked good and what didn't and it helped that they carry plus sizes in stock so you don't have to pin or clip the dress on to your bra!

Estelle's also has larger sizes to try on if you want to see more styles.

I am short (5'3) and an apple too. I got an a-line dress that was a halter. I went to Paradise Bridals and they had a lot of dresses for me to try on.

Thank you! I know what you mean when you say A-lines make you look huge! I'm afraid I'm gonna look like a snowball rolling down the aisle.. lol I will definitely take what you say into consideration.

And thanks to everybody else for your help. I absolutely love this forum! I'd go crazy without it!

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

Can anyone give me a list of places that I can go to try on Plus Size wedding gowns? I am a size 18/20 and would really like to be able to try on that size. I am looking for a non-poofy dress and I went to Davids Bridal and found a dress I really liked but want to try on more and they didn't have the other dresses I liked in my size. I am getting married on the beach in September and always invisioned myself in a linen dress but linen wrinkles so I want the same concept of linen. HELP!!

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

I went to Paradise Bridal in Patchogue and Village Bridal in Babylon. Had a nice size selection. Went with a Bonny. Empire waisted with a corset back. Felt the empire waist made me look way thinner than I am. Such a good experience. I'll bump the plus size bride thread.

Re: Plus Size Bride Help!

First off, congratulations. I highly recommend RK Bridal in NYC (walking distance from Penn Station) - lots of sizes there....I would also say, you absolutely can lose weight if you want to. I had gotten really big and just not comfortable with where I was and joined Jenny Craig in October...others use Weight Watchers which I think is great too...anyway, I'm down 40 lbs - still have 20 more to go. But if I could do it, anyone can :) I love to eat. I would also say don't rush into getting a dress. So many brides order over a year in advance...I waited til December (my wedding is in June) because I wanted to lose some weight before I tried things on. I am SO GRATEFUL I did that. The women at RK were great too - I worked with Olga and loved her...she knew exactly what worked on my frame. Trust the ladies - they usually have a good feel for it. Good luck
