Plus sized brides maid! please help me.

I did want my bridesmaids to match, but Im not sure what to do... I have 5 bridesmaids. one is shorter and plus size and the rest are string beans. Are there any type dresses that would look good on them all. I want them all to feel comfortable too. Its a hard subject so Im not sure what to do.

I know how you feel...I have lost a lot of weight, BUT, my brother got married and I was the heaviest (size 10), @ the time. My FSIL took me, and me only, to the store to try on dresses. The dresses that looked good on me were the ones she chose from. I definitely say no satin a definitely aline. I hope that helps. If you need any advice FM me.

I suggest something with cap sleeves, or at least, nothing strapless. I have all different shapes and sizes in my party, and I'm hoping to find something nice with a jacket that's not too expensive.

Depending upon her shape, I would choose an a-line (the most forgiving type of dress for pear shaped girls) or an ampere/empiere (sp?) (the one with the seam directly under the bustline for more apple shaped girls). If your friend is well endowed up top, then find a dress with either a shawl, caplet, sleeves or thick straps. If she (and you) are ok with it, have her wear platform shoes or 3-4 inch heels, this will give her added height.

A floor length dress will also help distribute things. Anything tea length will cut her legs and make them look chunkyish. Knee length might be ok if her calves are in good shape but then the platforms might not be an option.

After dress shape and color is fabric, this is a personal preference. My girls are wearing silk chiffon. It is a lighter material, but there are not as many color options to choose from.

In the end, you could ask her what she is comfortable with....and darker colors camouflage better than light ones.

Good luck!

I'm short and plus sized and I definitely recommend A line! EVERYONE looks great in it and it's slimming and lengthening and it hides the butt and hips! Definitely good. I would ASK about the strapless thing. I'm pretty big on top, but I really don't mind wearing strapless. Also, separates are sometimes better for all sizes because you can order the top in on size and the bottom in another and it's easier to adjust. I know being short, I have a shorter torise than most dresses allow for, so there's always fabic that bunches at the wasit. With a two piece, i don't have the problem because I can shorten each piece as I need to. Best of luck!

Hi,

I'd definitely recommend something that comes in 2 pieces, a-line, and a dropped waist. Also, maybe you can shop with the plus sized girl first and see if she what she is most comfortable in, and then go with the rest of the bridal party or have the rest go. No need to tell her that she is going first. You can just make it like a day for the two of you to do wedding stuff together.

An article in the Wedding Channel magazine suggested Watters & Watters style 4223 dress when someone asked a similar question. You can't see the whole dress in the picture, but it's a-line with a ribbon-belt at the waist and floor length. It's very pretty and apparently the graduating class of a boarding school in TX chose it as their graduation dress. So, if an entire class of high school girls could agree that this would look good on everyone... Hope this helps!

ETA: In response to JCMs post, there is a MUCH better pic (more realistic also) of the dress on pg 48 of Wedding Channel's Wedding Bells magazine. I'm guessing that the dress was probably pinned on the model to make it look the way it does in the pic I posted. According to the editors: 'The dress delivers beautifully in a modern yet elegant Jackie O kind of way. The seaming on the bodice and the V neckline draw the eye away from broad shoulders, give shape to the less endowed and a smooth fit to the well endowed.'

Obviously, the people who chose that dress were not overweight. A lot of plus size women including myself would never choose something like that because having a draw to the waist like that would make me feel like a barrel. I do not feel that this dress will look good on everyone. Try something that is A line from just under the breastline. It won't hug the stomach that way. It needs to be flowing material so that your BMs (all of them) will be comfortable and your pics will look good. If someone appears uncomfortable, they will look that way in your pics as well.

Hope THIS helps!

Bill Levkoff makes beautiful gowns and their sizes go up to 44. I am having all of my girls wear different dresses all in same color and fabric . . . you might want to consider this!

I had two plus size girls in my BP..It was a HUGE pain to find something they all liked and looked good in...
IMO...GO TO DAVIDS BRIDAL.. not necessarily to buy but they have a lot of plus size dresses for you BM to try on and see the styles she likes and feels comfortable in!
I wanted my girls to wear all different styles but one of the plus size girls was my MOH, my sister and she felt that having everyone in different dresses brought more attention to the fact that she was plus size...SO i had to find a dress that they all coulds wear!

I suggest A-line or empire satin dresses...I HATED the 2 piece dresses

here is a pic of them

Thanks for your help girls. I hope she can go with me :) Im a size 10 myself ( I didnt think that was overweight) LOL I didnt think of 2 pieces in that way - thank you. I think I will look for a 2 PIECE. She said she wore a strapless recently and liked it but I still think Ill go spaghetti strap and maybe a shawl....

Do you know whats more flattering - Chiffon or Satin?

Re: Plus sized brides maid! please help me.

You know the one thing that stank when I was shopping is... All the places I went to said they dont have plus size dresses to try on. She could try to put it on and not zipper it!!! I think thats horrible!!

So I will check out Davids Bridal - the only one on LI is Carle Place?

Also I was hoping for a sage green or a berry pink or a violet/blue - something lighter though b/c its a summer wedding... What do you think?

i have ALL different sizes- a 5'2' size 2 and a 5'10' size 24 (FSIL, love her!)...so i went with a two piece BM dress-same A-line skirt for all them, and then they each chose their own top. the size two wanted a halter-FSIL said anything but! so it helped each BM pick a style they felt great in! and ALLLLLL of them will be beautiful! plus after i picked them ( a long while ago) my MOH became pregnant and she'll have the baby 2 mos before the wedding. its helpful to her they are two peice because she can alter, replace and guesstimate a little bit easier for whatever her body ends up like 2 mos after baby.

Ditto on Davids Bridal There you can see how different styles look and then order the dress you want from a salon if you choose.

I am full figured (or I like to say extra huggable :) and A-line is a great fit and for my sisters wedding we had empire waist which looked great on all the girls. Sorry I don't have a scanner or I would send a picture.

I went to the Bridal Suite of Patachogue. They were very helpful. They carry many plus size bridesmaid dresses for you to try on. The skinniest girl in my bridal party is a size 14. They were great with us, and although I didn't get my dresses there, there were just soo many to choose from. The staff was awesome. I went there first because that is where i got my wedding dress.. I have a plus size in my BP and the others are string beans. I still chose a strapless dress satin and A line BUT for her dress we are adding straps so she is comfortable, my 2 jr BM are going to have thin straps and the plus size will have thicker straps they will all have a shawl so you really wont notice it for the formal pics but I dont care I just want them all to be comfortable, the seamstress can work with any dress you pick if they have to order material they will, you pay for it but its whatever you want- I would have gone nuts if I tried to pick 1 dress that would compliment all figures.

You can never go wrong with A-Line. It is the most flattering for all body types.
