Police Wives

Original post by Thrilled

I figured wecould start our own thread that no one else would want to read! There are enough of us I think, to start one.

There is a website called www.policewives.org that isn't remendously helpful for our purposes, but they have cool merchandise etc. Might be fun to check it out.

Anyone have anything to contribute? I figure we do our research first, see what's out there in the way of NYPD support, and go from there. Maybe a website is the best way to get started, maybe holding a meeting somewhere if we get enough interest, spreading by word of mouth....I would say our objectives would be support for each other, and most importantly, the Department. We could hold fundraisters, organize book and toy drives etc...

Re: Police Wives

Mine didn't take the practice test. But I'm going to nag him so that he'll take the next one. He's been so busy lately, trying to study, and planning the wedding and making major house renovations so we can move in after we're married.

And get this..... the Lt's test is May 31....our wedding is June 1 !!! The test is the day before our wedding.

Re: Police Wives

Oh Karen.....GOOD LUCK to you! Yikes! You guys will REALLY enjoy your honeymoon! At least it's not the same day!
Guess what Jerry told me today......the new fire class might be getting sworn in 4/28! That's sooo soon! He is supossed to do a lateral transfer. Yikes, I'm nervous and didn't expect it to happen so fast! I hope I can still be friends with you ladies even though I'll be a 'Fire Wife!' What a change for me eho always grew up in a 'Cop house!'

Re: Police Wives

Wow Shannon! I had no idea Jerry was doing a lateral transfer!!! It's not uncommon though - with all the crap and BS the NYPD has to put up with from the media, the mayor and the 'citizens' of this city, I'm not surprised...

God bless him and good luck to him!

Re: Police Wives

its so funny how many cops go to the NYFD but you usually dont see the opposite(FDNY to NYPD) lol
wonder why?

Re: Police Wives

Rachel,
That's exactly why he's doing it. Unfortunately, cops are hated and firemen are heros. It's a sad sterotype, but that's the media and the people of the city for you....we're both nervous about it. He's the minority as a cop, he actually likes his job and being a cop and he's a good one. But, in all honesty, the fire dept is much more flexible schedule wise and that's important for when we decide to have our pups. I guess every move you make career wise is a chance. He's taking a leave of absence so if he hates it, he can always come back. I can't imagine it's much different, it's just that having had my dad as a cop, I've become acostomed to it. Hope I can still come to your GTG!! By the way, I'll be making a huge career change at about the same time...yikes!! Lots going on!

Re: Police Wives

of COURSE you can still come to the GTG silly goose! YES!

I had a friend one time tell me, when we were discussing police vs. fire, the reason why people hated cops and loved firemen was this: 'Cops carry guns and are corruptible. All firemen do is rescue people.'

Needless to say I gave him a piece of my mind. I think I may have yelled.

Re: Police Wives

I hope you did yell! Some people are sooo ignorant! It's the same people that say they hate cops and love firemen that when something happens, calls the cops! Ugh! It makes me soo mad.
At the parade, the firemen of course got such a bigger reaction from the crowd than the cops and I turned to my MIL and said, 'Don't worry, your son will be considered a hero once he transfers in May.'

Re: Police Wives

Hey I am an FDNY wife and I think all our men get the raw end of the deal. I think the media ALWAYS portrays the police as the bad guys, but some fire men get bad raps as well, especially the moron author who accused the FDNY of looting stores on 9/11

In Steve's area they all love the fireman so much that they regularly try to break into the rigs and sometimes throw things off the roof at them when they respond. Nice isn't it

Re: Police Wives

I definitely agree that both of them get disrespected. However, like you said, the cops get more of a raw deal. They are really HATED. I just don't seem to see that kind of raw hatred for the FDNY. My FH won't wear anything that advertises he's a cop (no T-shirts, hats, etc.) because he's gotten grief about it when out, running errands, minding his own business. They can even be targeted by idiots in gangs if they advertise their profession.

Yet I think the FDNY can proudly wear their T-shirts, hats, etc. without as much concern.

When you come down to it, both guys are putting their lives on the line for others. Everyday.

I really think it's a political/racial/social thing when it comes to the NYPD. That's why they seem to get so much of a hard time. They are seen by the more liberal minded as fascists, and they take out their political feelings on the cops. Poor cops are just doing their jobs and trying to come home alive and well at the end of every day. They are ****ed if they do, and ****ed if they don't.

What can you do?

Re: Police Wives

Michelle,
It's definately a rough job for both, but you have to admit that the cops have so much of a worse rap and are treated so much worse than the firemen are....Big brother definately keeps more eyes on the NYPD. They just wait for something to happen and then the media runs with it....

Re: Police Wives

I totally agree with you, I think the NYPD gets a bad rap all around. It is very true about them not being able to wear anything that indetifies them as an officer while not on duty.

The FDNY is real big on company pride as you can see on all the assorted hats, T-shirts, tatoos, etc that they wear.

I think they are both GROSSLY underpaid and deserve so much more
