Political correctness?

Original post by heidla

Dh and I were having a discussion last night about how we think that some people have taken political correctness to an extreme. This led into TV show examples. Like would 'All In the Family' be allowed on network tv or even 'Dukes of Hazzard'?

Just thought I'd get other opinions.

Also, why do they have such violent shows on network television?

.

I'd love to know the answer to this to (and the solution)

As a student of TV Production as an undergraduate I did a unit study on Norman Lear sitcoms.

'All in the Family' began in the early 70s with a disclaimer right before the first episode aired. It was controversial then and it would be now. Yes Archie Bunker may have been seen as politically incorrect, and if you took the show at face value then most people today would be picketing and calling up the TV station protesting. This show did what no other show before it did - it showed ignorance at its best and how to learn from it. My favorite episode was when Archie received a blood transfusion from an African-American female doctor and was convinced that he would turn black as a result. The whole idea of that is ludicrous but they were trying to make a point. Thepoint, in my opinion, was well-received.

'The Jeffersons' and 'Maude' were also Lear productions that discussed many issues still relevant today but unspoken in the 70s such as interracial relationships and abortion.

I think all of those shows were way ahead of their time and well done.

I agree! They were ground breaking because they delt with issues that people were to affraid to talk about. The funny thing is that with all of the junk that is on TV today(violence, sex, etc), it's ironic that shows such as 'All in the Family' would not be received the same. Look at the other shows that were groundbreaking...'Three's Company', 'The Cosby Show', even the 'Golden Girls' all had their time and place in history and discussed issues such as homophobia, racism, and agism.

Unfortunately because so many people do watch them. If no one watched them there would be no market for them, but in fact they do so the networks are making a profit by producing shows like that. Sad...

No one has made a big enough stink about it.

I wonder if we're not more PC today BECAUSE of shows like All in the Family. No one would want to be referred to as an 'Archie Bunker' - the name is synonymous with 'ignorant' 'racist' etc. If this show intended to send a message, the one I received told me that thoughtful, considerate people do not think the way Archie Bunker thinks. I definitely believe it would be allowed on network tv, but I wonder if it would have a market like it did back in the 70's.

I'm not too sure about Dukes of Hazzard though - networks don't want to promote the image of the police as the 'bad guy' nowadays. I watched that show religiously when I was a kid and yet I can't remember much about it except the theme song..
