Poll: Broke even, Made money, Fell short

Poll: Broke even, Made money, Fell short

I hope this doesn't come across rude...but I'm curious. My SO is *convinced* that we're going to make all the money we're spending on our wedding and then some...I'm not so convinced.

So...for those of you who got married...if you wouldn't mind answering...did you Break Even, Make Money or Fall Short?

I am NOT married yet, but I know alot of people who are. Do not expect to make alot of money. It would be nice to get some generous contributions but do not count on it.

*I'm* not counting on it...he is. Poor thing has no clue...my sister actually made money - she's the *only* one I've ever heard of who did. My best friend had a couple of guests that didn't even give her a card - let alone a 'gift'...

Needless to say, he's in for a shock.

We defintely fell short.

We did not receive what was paid for the wedding.. we didn't even get half back! However, we did get a nice chunk of change. If you count all the gifts received for e-party, shower & wedding you do make out well.

We fell short from what was paid for the wedding. I was really surprised. Some people were really generous, while others were surprisingly not. But we didn't pay for it, my mom did, so I guess we came out ahead.

I have had many a disagreement when it comes to this topic. A lot of people look at a wedding as some sort of fundraiser, its not about making money. Its about spending what you can afford to have the people you love celebrate your union. With that being said if your SO/parter/mate/Fi is planning on spending and making it back, tell him not to do this, b/c he will be sorely disappointed.

The term make back, really turns my stomach, no one told any of us to go out and spend the money we did or will spend. Whether we get married at a JOTP or at hall its still the same married. I think this question must never be asked. It makes brides look greedy. If people give, be thankful, if they don't still be thankful. I would hope they were not invited with the thought in mind, you must help me to cover the cost of what I spent.

We made a little more that the cost of the hall.

not even close!!! I don't think we even got 1/3 of what we spent...but that is b/c we went all out...and enjoyed ourselves...

my sister on the otherhand...went a different route and didn't spend as much...but taking out parent gifts/donations to the wedding...I still don't think she broke even

I don't think its at all realistic to think you'll get your money back. No one I know did either - after all, these are wedding GIFTS - solely up to the discretion of your guests. There are even people in my family who think its tacky to give money as a wedding gift so I KNOW that I won't make my money back!

Your SO is in for a rude awakening and he's completely missing the point of why people get married to begin with.

I understand that you're just asking an innocent question, so I don't want to come off as *bashing*, but you probably ought to talk to him about what the day is REALLY about. THe last thing you want is to hear him go on and on about how disappointed he is AFTER you just had the most wonderful day of your life (which you will)

That being said, most of our 180 guests were extremely generous. We didn't even come CLOSE to breaking even. But we never planned on it either.

I'm not expecting to make money on the wedding, because we are definately going over board with some of the costs...if we were more conservative about spending, we probabaly would.

We probably fell a little short of what we spent, but it came pretty close.

I don't know anybody who made back even a fraction of what they spent.

A cousin of mines went to extraordinary lengths to do everything 'cheap' (& it showed) but still didn't break even. The only way I can see a couple coming out ahead is going to JOTP.

Dollar wise, we fell short, but...

In terms of the love and joy that filled our day, our hopes were far exceeded.

I know these things don't pay the bills, but they are what will make you richer in the long run

Happy planning!!

We fell short. To us, our wedding was not a business deal to make money. That is not what weddings are all about. It was a celebration of our love. If we were hoping to make money out of it we would not of gotten married where we did. I do not regret for one second where we got married. It was so worth it!

The best I ever heard someone doing was getting about 60% back of what they spent.

I agree with Shamma, though. It's not a fundraiser, although it would be nice!!

We definitely didn't make money, but we weren't trying to and knew we wouldn't.

We had our dream wedding and really didn't cut any corners or deny ourselves anything we really wanted. Our gifts (minus parental contributions) didn't equal half of what we spent (and we had some very generous guests).

But since everything was paid for before the wedding, all the gifts were just icing on the cake of a wonderful day.

We actually broke even. If you count everything that DH and I spent, we made it back in gifts. If you include the entire cost of the wedding, then we fell short by a whole lot.

We never expected such generosity from our guests, and were truly overwhelmed at the gifts we received.
