I am insisting on having a Dominican Cake at my wedding..it's kind of a tradition.
I found someone who can make it and they are sooooo DELICIOUS...
Best part is she can make it as fancy as a wedding cake...fondant and all....(for those of you who know Dominican Cakes know they are not the prettiest style cakes..)
The issue is if you use fondant which is gorgeous I feel it takes away from the experience of the Dominican Cake..the traditional frosting is part of the taste and basically you are not really suppose to eat fondant.
If you use the traditional frosting then it is not as pretty..or smooth as fondant...
FH is now INSISTING it should be PRETTIER and now I don't know what to do
the pic below is generally the style of the cake that we want...it won't be white though so there is where the frosting become an issue...
Oh Yeah.... and there is a $200.00 price difference..if we go with the more expensive fondant...
thanks to the chicas who voted...i am gonna have to just break the bad news to FH lol

I love dominican cake too but I dont like the frosting of any cake (un less is chocolate ) so in my case I will choose go with the fondant, the middle part is still great

If the cake still taste good i say go for the fondant that way its prettier and taste good. people pay attention to your cake at the wedding more than you think. Who would want an ugly cake at there wedding?

Ugly was never the issue..the other frosting does not make it ugly....just less smooth....

Re: Poll-Cake Issue!
I know (cause my friend used to make cakes) that the 'pretty cakes' arent real cakes, only the bottom layer of the cake is real (where you and FH cut and feed it to each other) the rest is usually not edible and then the kitchen in the back has these sheet cakes that are served ... why dont you do that? get a pretty fake cake and the served slices will be the regular one. Nobody will tell the difference once it cut

Re: Poll-Cake Issue!
you can have both dont feel you have to choose. Have just the layer youre going to cut into made of real cake, the rest they use cake molds and put the fondant over and nobody will know theres no cake inside. Ask the baker to do sheet cake to serve to your guests and this way they can get it with the icing you want.

well nobody will know its 50 pounds, but people will taste it and see it. On a table it will look like its 50 pounds hahaha. You wont even know, i had a 6 layer cake with real cake inside and i have no clue if it was heavy or not lol.
But if you want it to be real inside all the layers then you can do buttercream with a layer of fondant on top. SOME places will even remove the fondant on each slice of cake, you would have to talk to your RH about this.
BUT let me be honest and say that if ppl dont like the fondant then they can just eat the rest of the cake. I dont like any icing, buttercream, whipped cream(it makes me sick) and i deal with it. I just eat everything else BUT the one little side with the icing on it, it really is no big deal, you start from the inside out and then when you get to the end where there is icing on it youjust stop eating the cake hahaha, i do it at every occasion so others can do it for 1. OR ask the baker what type of fondant they use. Many just buy it from a place that makes fondant which makes it taste bad and others make it themselves which honestly ive had and was DELICIOUS. SOme use rice krispies treat in it to give it a great taste.

THE BAKER ACTUALLY SUGGESTED THIS TO ME..THE FROSTING ON THE INSIDE OF THE FONDANT...SHE ACTUALLY DOES MAKE THE FONDANT HERSLEF....
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF DOING BOTH...
THANKS DARLING THAT MAY BE THE ANSWER!!!

yeah most places now do a layer of buttercream and then fondant on top. Seems like it may be the best way for you to go. If she makes the fondant herself, ask to taste it. Ive tasted fondant where it tastes weird and bad, but ive also tasted some that are awesome, you might just like it.

I DID TASTE IT...IT ACTUALLY WAS NOT BAD AT ALL BUT I FELT THAT IT TOOK AWAY FROM THE TASTE OF DOMINICAN CAKE...BUT WITH THE LAYER IN THE INSIDE...IT MIGHT BE PERFECT....
