so if i book a percussionist through my DJ (which i think i am doing), my DJ said that i could use that same guy to be the steel drummer at the cocktail hour for only a few hundred more (which is pretty good, considering other prices i've seen) ... but is it really worth it? i mean, it's still real money ... and do people actually SEE (and CARE) about a live musician? Would i be better off keeping that money and using it for other things?

Re: POLL: CH steel drummer - worth it, or not?
We booked a three piece band for our CH - ours is outside on the water. I think it's a really nice addition - kind of sets the mood for people. Drinks in hand - the ocean breeze and a little Bob Marley on the steel drums.
We got a pretty great deal through our DJ for the band BUT we did start look at gigmasters.com and saw some guys that were cheaper.
As another bride said - you can have just one guy play and he will have a backtrack which isn't horrible.
But I also agree w/ another bride - if the guy will already be there for your actual reception you shouldn't have to pay sooo much more money for him to do CH.
See if you can negotiate - and if not i would check out gigmasters.com - but either way, i think its a nice touch.
