so if i book a percussionist through my DJ (which i think i am doing), my DJ said that i could use that same guy to be the steel drummer at the cocktail hour for only a few hundred more (which is pretty good, considering other prices i've seen) ... but is it really worth it? i mean, it's still real money ... and do people actually SEE (and CARE) about a live musician? Would i be better off keeping that money and using it for other things?

Re: POLL: CH steel drummer - worth it, or not?
I'm biased... I am all for the steel drummer! I think especially if you are having an outdoor CH, it adds a nice little mood to it... very relaxing yet fun at the same time. The DJ we are planning on going with has an option for a steel drummer and it's around that price. I say if you have the $$ go for it.

but do people actually SEE the guy, or will they just kinda look and walk away?
i dunno ... i want to have the steel drummer AND my money at the same time lol

I really don't feel like you NEED to see him. I mean what they do is pretty cool to watch (because I wouldn't know the first thing about how to play one of those) but they aren't really meant to be the spotlight of the CH. Just to set the mood and play nice relaxing sounds. It's just an alternative to having the DJ just play a CD. Usually steel drummers will play along to backing tracks .

but then couldn't i just get the DJ to play steel drum music (for free) and have the same affect?

I feel like if he's aclready there for the reception, then the CH shouldn't cost hundreds more.

IMO- If it is not there I don't think you or your guests will miss it. We were considering a steel drummer also, but I felt that usually people are more focused on the food and the atmosphere of the CH than the music. I think the music is more important for the reception than the CH. If you have the extra $$ then go for it it would be nice. Good Luck!!

Is it really $700 more for JUST the CH? Because that's kinda crazy.

One steel drum player is pointless, you need at least two because one needs to play melody and the other plays harmony. Otherwise it sounds odd with just one. With that said, it was something that I was on the fence about having but it's one of the things that my wedding guests still talk about! Totally worth it!
EDA: To say that if you hire one person they will likely have a background track.

Im biased as well because i used to play steel drums I would say yes...I also agree with more than one person playing you don't necessarily need more than one but its much better to have at least 2 So that is worth the couple hundred.

We had a steel drum band for CH and my guests loved it...they said it made them feel as if they were on a tropical island somewhere. Totally totally worth it...think about the difference live music makes vs putting on a CD

Had it at my wedding... it was a dj add on... He played as our percussionist as well so it was like $300-400 to add on...
I wasnt at my CH for very long... maybe 10 mins, but I loved what I heard and he was def in a prime location and seen by everyone... It paved the way for my beachy wedding.... and I recieved a few compliments on how great it was

Yeah, that's exactly what my deal is ... i'm def getting a percussionist, having him come to the CH as well is $300 more ...
if i ONLY did a steel drummer (no percussionist at the reception) it's a lot more .... and if i did it through teh RH, they quoted me $800 for the CH only (ridiculous! lol)
