Poll: Circumcision?

Re: Poll: Circumcision?

I know very few men that are uncircumsized. And they all wish they had been. Mostly for the reaction of women as mentioned above.

Also if there is a chance of infection, and it can be done right after birth with just a little recovery, then that's all fine by me.

Plus DH would never allow his son to go uncircumsized. And I want my baby boy to look like Daddy also. So my answer is undoubtedly YES........................

I voted no for this, although its not quite a definite 'NO'. For me the issue is not being different or infection, but rather a religious issue. Neither DH nor I are observant, but if a kid decided to become more religious, he'll need to get a circumcision done at that later age, which is much more painful.

So to some degree, we as parents will need to decide how difficult we would want this religous choice to be.

But otherwise, I see no reason for it, so long that the 'instrument' is kept clean

My son (should I have one) will be circumsized. A common misconception about the procedure is that it's barbaric...but in truth, it's very simple, very quick, and no longer does the baby have to feel anything going on. My nephew was circumsized during his bris a few months ago, and a simple topical anesthetic solved the problem of pain...he barely squeaked. The soreness only lasts on the baby for a day or two, and if mommy is gentile, he won't even know what happened.

A friend of DH's had it done in high school, and the poor guy limped his way through school for 3 weeks. Honestly, the older you get, the less tolerance you have for pain, and there is more surface area to cover on an adult...eek. DH says the day he saw his friend in such agony, he ran home to kiss his mother and thank her for doing it to him when he was baby.

Re: Poll: Circumcision?

After reading and responding to this thread I became very curious so I talked to my son abut it and am posting his comments here with his permission.

He said has never had a single problem, including any sort of infection. As long as you keep clean there is no greater chance of infection there than anywhere else on your body. Furthermore, the fears about the locker room and being perceived as different are completely off base. He said he has never had any of his friends or anyone in a locker room, mens room or anywhere else tease him or even comment on that fact that he is not circumcised. He and his friends have talked about it (I don't want to know how that subject came up) and the only question was 'Does it feel different?' which of course he can't answer because he doesn't know how it feels to be circumcised.

As for being concerned about how a female might react.... his only comment was 'I have never had any complaints and I don't think there will be!!!!!' at which point I put my hands over my ears and ran out of the room! That was a little too much info for me!!!

He did suggest that, for those of you with uncircumcised sons, they wear boxers. He said sometimes briefs can cause irritation.

I will have my son circumsized. I want him to be like his father and do not want him to have to deal with being 'different' growing up.. Kids can be cruel..

YABBO, i have never seen an uncircumsized one either!!

LOL - that's too cute, Wendy! Thank you (and your son) for posting all that...I really appreciate the input.

Misty...it's not so much that I think it's barbaric (I don't necessarily) as I think it's unnecessary. And that is where I'm torn.

I don't really understand the whole 'look like daddy' points. Will the son see daddy to know? What if the son was adopted? He would be different from daddy - but still as loved, no? (So NOT looking to cause offense, I genuinely do not get it and am looking for opinions.)

Re: Poll: Circumcision?

Ok maybe all doctors PUSH for it was the wrong choice of words.
Of course it is a personal decision, I have been socializing with Doctors for 10 years now, my DH's line of work, and the subject has come up before ( mostly me asking when I was about to have billy) and 99% of them all said they would all have there own sons circumsized.
My pediatricians said that its the smart thing to do but it was up to me.

I'm also sure that not all men who arent have issues, I mean, I hope that we would all bring up our children teaching them how they should love there bodies and be proud, but all I ever heard from girls when we were younger ( and some still now) are them making fun of it. I guess cause its not what most P.e.N.I.S.'s look like.
Its very sad but its true

Totally didn't think you thought that, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was implying that. It's been said to me many times by people that didn't understand the 'ritual' behind it. I should have explained myself more!

I dont think that my husband plans on making it a point to walk around naked when we have children, but there are sometimes when a kid does see his or her parents with no cloths on weather you like it or not...

Re: Poll: Circumcision?

I don't plan to circumcise my future son/s. I don't think its necessary. I am also a person who doesn't like plastic surgery. I don't believe in unnecessary medical prcedures so that's the perspective I speak from. That's just me, I wouldn't tell anyone not to have one. I think for religious reasons its perfectly fine. Other than that, what's the point. The risk of infection is negligible in someone who is clean. The American Academy of Pediatrics position is that a circumcision is of no proven benefit but may be done as a choice of the parents. I think its very wrong for any pediatrician to give you any other view. It should not be encouraged or discouraged, its what you want.

Edited to add. The penis is not very attractive, either way so what's the difference. JMO

Jessica, I too will be FAR from the procedure!

If I have a son, he will be circumsized. FH had it done late in life and the story he tells is not a happy one, and no baby of mine should have to go through that!

Re: Poll: Circumcision?

My son is circumsized and I have no regrets. The proceedure was over in less than 10 minutes and I honestly never even considered not circumcising him - nor did my husband...he didn't even understand why I would have the slightest doubt about doing it! Maybe we should have put more 'research' into it, but we are both comfortable with the decision - I also don't want him to face being the 'different' one. And yes, I would love him just the same either way, but I am very happy we had it done and if we are blessed with another son, he will have it done also.
