Marymoon, you've done it!! You hit the nail on the head as to why I voted for Bush and not Kerry (although I'm sure this is far from your intention ).
Kerry did not stand for what I know he believes in. Bush does. I'm not asking you to agree with Bush's ideals, there are plenty of times that I don't, but I know what they are and to me, a man of integrity stands his ground regardless of popular opinion.
I feel better now

Posted by myasmom Personally.. I do not condone homosexuality. Do I have gay friends..yes but thats because I do not feel it is my place to condemn anyone..
Ah-ha. See, I didn't realize that. I very much disagree with that but it's entirely your right to feel that way.

Re: Poll for Gore/Kerry voters
Just to clarify..there are people who think homosexuality is wrong based on morals and religious beleifs but beleive it is wrong to discriminate against gays. Thats where I have teh problem..when either side tries to impose their beleifs on either side. All I ask from my gay friends is respect. And they can surely tell you I give the same back. We just have differing views on what is considered to be a normal relationship. But if someone heckles them..I have stood up for them in the past and that wont change. But my beliefs are mine but I can still relate to them as people.

Re: Poll for Gore/Kerry voters
I have to agree. People make the gay marriage thing a 'Religious' issue when it is certainly not. Nobody is saying that if the government allows same sex marriage, the Catholic church or other churches would be forced to marry gays. Of course not!! That would be a violation of church and state.
It's funny because many people do not have a problem with civil unions but get crazy over gay marriage. I don't know why people have such a problem with gay marriage...it seems to be just semantics to me since 'gay marriage' would bestow the same rights as civil unions (e.g. health benefits, inheritancy, etc.)

because one is called a civil union and the other is called marraige. They have differing meanings.
As for gay marraige..you will have a hard time telling those who do not beleive in it that it is not a religious issue.
For me I plan to live like this..if gay marraige is passed as legal..it wont kill me or hurt me..my morals wont change.
In some countries if they know you are gay..they kill you..I think that is an extreme and wrong.

Actually, they do NOT have different meanings:
mar·riage [ mérrij ] (plural mar·riages)
noun
1. legal relationship between spouses: a legally recognized relationship, established by a civil or religious ceremony, between two people who intend to live together as sexual and domestic partners
2. particular marriage relationship: a married relationship between two particular people, or an individual’s relationship with an individual spouse
3. joining in wedlock: the joining together in wedlock of two people
4. marriage ceremony: the ceremony in which two people are joined together formally in wedlock
5. union of two things: a close union, blend, or mixture of two things Civilization is based on the marriage of tradition and innovation.
6. card games king and queen of same suit: a combination of the king and queen of the same suit, in card games such as pinochle and bezique
union >noun 1 the action or fact of uniting or being united. 2 a state of harmony or agreement. 3 a marriage. 4 a club, society, or association formed by people with a common interest or purpose. 5 (also Union) a political unit consisting of a number of states or provinces with the same central government.

Yes nad if you want to say that a civil union is what the gov't grants and a marrige is a religious thing, then obviously the laws only affect the 'civil union' aspect and ot 'marriage' at all..but marriage IS a legal term. Religious marriage and legal marriage are not one and the same

Re: Poll for Gore/Kerry voters
I did not need anyone to bring out websters..I am clearly aware of what they mean in the dictionary.
Differing meanings dont always relate to wordage..it can mean the thoughts that each word invokes for a person. Its just like some homosexuals prefer to be called well homosexual but the word Queer..invokes something negative for some and others are fine with being called queer.
To me, a civil union is fine as a descriptive work for the ceremony that takes place between homosexuals but for me I would not refer to it as a marraige as it connotaes the same relationship I have with my husband.. thats what I was referring to. As I said..this is me..not the rest of America that I am speaking with..some people dont want Union. marraige..NADA.
Honestly..this is a topic we wont see eye to eye on. I have my views and they wont change so lets leave it at that.

P>S I am fine with civil union..I can compromise but some people dont seem to want to compromise on any issue pertaining to homosexuals and that I dont agree with. This is a topic that can have a middle ground.

Yeah definitely. I really respect your willingness to be accepting of other people's right to do things that you don't agree with.

Thank you. I think thats why my gay friends and I get along. They realize that it all boil down to respect. There are so many things we all dont agree with but it doesnt mean we should curse or hurt each other.. One of my BM is gay and I am soooo proud to have had her by my side.

I voted other, because I really do not believe, with all of the black box voting that went on in this country, especially in critical swing states, that Bush really won this election in a fair way. But I am a major conspiracy theorist, and just pissed off in general. Too many things just do not add up in my eyes.

I agree. cnn.com has a story on it about a precinct that reported almost 4,000 votes for Bush, even though only about 700 people actually voted. They said it was a 'computer glitch.' Makes you wonder how many more of those 'computer glitches' happened on Tuesday...

I thought it was the precinth (sp??) only had 700 registered voters. Either way it's still suspect.

Re: Poll for Gore/Kerry voters
Truth be told given the reports that are now coming out about precincts in Ohio that had no votes because their ballot machindes broke and the touch screens that didn't work properly in Florida, I will always wonder if Bush won this one legitimately.
I worked the polls in Detroit this year and although the mainstream press did not report on the voter supression that took place in the election, it was there in full effect. It was disheartening to see the lengths people would go to prevent their fellow citizens from voting.

also..what happens when/if gay marraige is passed..do you think the government should force a church to marry a homosexual couple? Its bigger than just giving rights..its people's beleifs on both sides.
Well, my church won't marry me and my FH but we're not gay. I don't think this is really a relevant argument. I personally don't see how disallowing gays to marry is much different from a lot of the racist policies in the country prior to the civil rights movement (To Clarify: I'm not talking about slavery).
Marymoon, I'm going to be honest - if John Kerry had grown a set and said that he is 100% for gay marriage and will work to pass bills that allows for it, I would have seriously thought about voting for him. However, even the self proclaimed 'most liberal senator' wasn't for it. Unfortunately, we're pretty far off from this happening.

I think this thing about gay marriage really became an issue of semantics. I think using the word marriage in reference to gays is what terrified a lot of people. I think if Bush and Kerry were disputing 'gay legal partnerships' I wonder if this would have been as large an issue. I think a lot of people confused legal rights with religious practices.
I think Kerry was pretty upfront about who he was. Liberal on some issues conservative on others.

Thank you making my point Lanakai..

Yes I do beleive he was but remember..the entire country is not made up of just Liberals or conservatives..some are in the middle and I think its fair to say that the issues a president declares a position on maybe what can win him his candidacy or help his lose it..once again..for both republicans and Democrats.
For the record..no matter who wins..the bottom line on the Gay issu or abortion issue..heck any issue..people will still be forcing their own beleifs on others..wether Pro or Not!

Re: Poll for Gore/Kerry voters
State of the country: Your opinion.. and your opinion only
Actually, there's pretty hard scientific evidence that suggests that our country is not doing well economically and socially.
War thats spiraling out of control: Perhaps I an agree here... but again I don't have any family members over there so I cannot comment on this. Therefore... it really isn't an issue I can base my vote on. The closest thing I have to this is... my co-worker is in Iraq right now... but he comes home in January.
I truly hope that if any of these issues ever happen to fall into your lap (i.e. become your personal situation) that you will find empathy in your fellow citizens not apathy. You are absolutely entitled to be self-interested but is certainly disheartening to see.
