Poll - Have you ever heard of this?

Poll - Have you ever heard of this?

One of our friends called called last night and asked if we had ever heard of the bestman paying for the church? He's the bestman in a wedding next year and the 'donation' is $600.00, the groom called him yesterday and told him that it's etiquette for the bestman to pay for the church and if he couldn't pay for it on his own (he's trying to save to buy a home) to ask the groomsmen to chip in.

I've never heard of such a thing???

I've never heard of that but I have heard of the best man taking care of the tipping at the church ( the priest / deacon and alter boys)

I have never heard of anything like that. That sounds crazy. I thought that was the bride/groom or their parents responsibility to pay for things. If not I should ask the wedding party to help pay for the wedding

From what I've read, the best man is supposed to take care of the tipping, etc. that day so the groom doesn't have to be bothered with it and can concentrate on the wedding. However, the money for the tips comes from the groom (or whoever is paying for the wedding). The best man is just in charge of holding and passing out the envelopes. That's ridiculous to ask the best man to pay for the groom's ceremony.

I never heard of that, and I think it is rude of the groom to tell the BM he HAS to pay for the church.

I think the groom is trying to put a fast one!

What I have heard in the Spanish culture is of Padrinos or 'sponsors' that are sort of like honor attendants (MOH and BM) but not quite. And they normally do cover some expenses detailed by the bride and groom...ex church, limos, cake, flowers, etc.

The below is from theknot.com...

Best Man: Your Duties in Detail

As best man, you may think you're just a glorified groomsman, but guess what? You actually have responsibilities -- you'll be a combination valet and hand-holder as you help the groom come through this nerve-wracking experience with flying colors. As leader of the groom's posse, you'll:

Serve as the groom's personal aide and adviser before and during the wedding. This can include helping him pack for the honeymoon (the valet part).

Help the groom choose and rent (or buy) wedding formalwear, and coordinate the other groomsmen's rentals. You guys are supposed to match, after all! You may be expected to arrange accommodations for out-of-town groomsmen.

Organize the bachelor party. Don't be shy about enlisting other groomsmen to help you out -- most guys don't mind this duty! Put financial worries out of your mind -- the cost should be split among everyone who attends the bash.

Attend the rehearsal dinner with the bride and groom and all the other attendants. This is your chance to figure out how you're supposed to walk down that aisle.

Stand beside the groom at the altar and keep the bride's ring until vows are exchanged. Find a safe place for the ring (and make sure your pockets don't have holes) -- you don't want to fumble around when it's time to whip it out.

Corral the other groomsmen and make sure they're performing their duties.

Sign the marriage license as a witness after the ceremony, along with the maid of honor.

Give the officiant a sealed envelope with his or her fee (the groom's responsibility) just after the ceremony.

You may be announced with the maid of honor when the reception begins.

Dance with both the honor attendant and the bride during the newlyweds' first dance.

Give the first toast to the bride and groom at the reception. This is your biggest -- and probably most frightening -- duty. Read our article about toasting, and remember the cardinal rule: Mum's the word on the bachelor bacchanalia.

Collect any gift envelopes guests bring to the reception. You may be asked to deposit them in the couple's bank account or at least to keep them until the couple returns from their honeymoon.

Decorate the getaway mobile. Grab the other groomsmen and the bridesmaids for this one.

Drive the couple to the wedding-night hotel or airport after the reception. If you perform this service, you'll need to stay sober throughout the reception. If you have a feeling this may not be possible, hire a limo to drive the couple into the sunset.

The wedding will be over in the blink of an eye, so remember to enjoy yourself at the reception. After all, you're there to celebrate the happiest day of your best friend's life.

Never heard of the bm paying for the church, but I did here that they are the ones who are suppossed to tip the priest, which by the way...I didn't know that you COULD tip a priest!!! Does anyone know how much that is supposed to be?

that's total bull, the best man is NOT responsible to pay for the church-that's really crass that the groom told him he should pay.

I've never heard of it, but according to the etiquette books the best man is supposed to give the payment to the church, etc, as in physically hand in the payments so the groom doens;'t have to worry about it, but the money is from the B&G or whomever is paying, not from the BM's pocket. Maybe he read this somewhere and got confujsed?

Nope and even if it was, we'd NEVER ask that of him.

My FMIL told my FBIL (who is our Best Man and only 16) that he's responsible for paying for the church. She claims it's a Greek tradition for the best man to pay his membership fee and the couple's memebership fee. (Which, incidentally, is not cheap at the church we're using)

The poor kid had been stressing about saving his money until I found out and told him that we would be handling it.
