I've always given cash and a co-worker told me that it was impolite...
I told her that I'd rather receive cash from a guest than a check b/c it could bounce!!!!

Christine-definitely give a check...I've heard some horror stories of people's cards disappearing at the reception etc...I always prefer to give a check.
I agree!

I give checks just in case a card gets misplaced.
It's happened to me
Yep, that's why I give a check. It's also a record of how much you gave.

I always give a check for a wedding because it is usually a large amount of $$$. FH always gives cash.

I like to give cash, b/c you run into the issue of who to write the check out to.
I know in our case, until my name is officially changed at the bank (by bringing in my marriage license) they cannot deposit checks written out to Mr. & Mrs. F,,,,,,., or worse, Jessica F. when I will still be Jessica M to the bank.
That's actually not true. DH and I opened a joint account the day after the wedding, as we didn't want all those checks to sit around in our house for 2 weeks while we were on our honeymoon. And although I had nothing at the time showing my new married name, I was still able to sign my married name to the back of the check for those checks made out to Mr and Mrs. R...and the checks were still able to be deposited. As of today, I have not yet changed my name on my license and ss card (will be doing that Friday), and I've had no problems deposting money into our joint account.

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
Almost all of our gifts were checks but of the ones that gave cash, they were either super young or super old. No one our age or our parents age gave us cash. I thought it was interesting. DH and I always give checks in case they should get lost we can write a new one.

I've always given cash. I don't really know why, i just have. I just assumed that giving cash was the best way to go. I mean in everything else, cash is preferred... so why is this different?

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
Before I gave cash, but now I give checks. It's just easier that way. And I have always written it out to Mr & Mrs Last Name. Should I write it out to Mr. Last Name and Ms. Last Name?

Same here. We opened a joint account before the wedding. Almost all of our checks were made out to Mr. and Mrs. S___. I signed the back of the checks Brooke S___ and there was no problem depositing the checks into our account. The bank even changed my name over before I had the chance to show them my marriage certificate which I thought was odd. I'd give a check b/c in case something happened to the gift at the reception, you could always cancel the check.

I give a check. God forbid someone steals their envelopes (and I know someone this happened to) you can always stop payment on a check and replace it.

I used to be the cash only person. But then I keep hearing about people who loose the gifts (or have them taken) so I figure checks are a better bet.

I dont think its rude either way. I for one always give cash so the couple can use my gift on their honeymoon if they so choose.

Sadly, if a card goes missing, the Bride and Groom will think you never gave them anything.
With a check you can cancel it and send another.
I totally agree. I like checks because you have a record of the transactions.
