I've always given cash and a co-worker told me that it was impolite...
I told her that I'd rather receive cash from a guest than a check b/c it could bounce!!!!

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
why is it impolite to give cash?
99% of our gifts at the wedding were checks. and that's what I prefer. I felt safer with checks.

I do both, it depends on how close I am with the couple.

I don't understand why it's impolite either. Like Dina - I was more comfortable with the checks.

I like to give cash, b/c you run into the issue of who to write the check out to.
I know in our case, until my name is officially changed at the bank (by bringing in my marriage license) they cannot deposit checks written out to Mr. & Mrs. F,,,,,,., or worse, Jessica F. when I will still be Jessica M to the bank.

No clue - that's what my co-worker said...
I've just heard (many) stories where a couple's received a check and it's bounced!

I give checks just in case a card gets misplaced.
It's happened to me

Sadly, if a card goes missing, the Bride and Groom will think you never gave them anything.
With a check you can cancel it and send another.

I give cash, a friend of mine had 5 checks bounce that were given to her as a wedding gift!

Check. I would be afraid of something happening to the card if it had cash in it. Plus I don't usually carry that much cash on me to stick in a card, it's easier to just write a check.

I always write a check made out to the name of the person who invited me. (what ever their name is at the time of invite)
My name is on my check, so I feel more comfortable giving that rather than cash. With all the envelopes and cards being opened (in a flurry as I imagine it ) I wouldn't want my cash to get mixed with someone else's. This way they know I indeed gave a gift, and how much.

exactly what I was going to say- Jake and I had to go to the bank together b/c we got so many Mr and Mrs Jake's last name- which is NOT my last name- so I am not changing my bank account and that's where we put the money
Citi bank did depsit the check with Jake standing there- but I also explained the situation to the bank Manager- she loves me

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
Ive done both.. and really it just depended on if I had a chance to go to the bank to get 'crisp' bills or not.

Check always....
We rec'd lots of checks and lots of envelopes with cash. We of course preferred to receive the cash... but give checks.

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
Most definitely checks. Cards are often misplaced or lost in the flurry of packing things up after a wedding, plus I imagine the bride and groom to be opening lots of cards at a given time, i wouldn't want my gift to be mixed in with another, or worse, have them assume i didn't give one.

I never knew that giving cash was impolite. I always used to give checks, but DH likes to give cash.
whenever we discuss it, he says 'Cash is King' or 'every one wants cash'

Re: POLL: When giving monetary gifts at a wedding...
I wouldn't think it was impolite if someone gave me cash. I give checks because I had an incident where I gave cash-never got a thank you-so I had no idea if the B&G lost my card.

Christine-definitely give a check...I've heard some horror stories of people's cards disappearing at the reception etc...I always prefer to give a check.
