Poll: Yet another thing from LIW, which I never heard of in my life

Original post by itslaurie.

are you FIL's GOING TO pay for. ...

ETA: I am asking because I have never heard of this before, and I am not mocking anyone. If anything, I am mocking myself.

It is actually traditional for the groom's parents to buy dining room furniture in my cousin't family. Not too much of a stretch for bedroom furniture. I'd accept anything as a gift!

My FMIL offered to buy us a Refrigerator and a Washer/Dryer for our condo, but we didn't need it so we used it towards new flooring. To me, a gift is a gift!

Ummm no and that would freak me out if they did. I would be sitting there thinking...ummm are they trying to tell us something??

And yes Laurie, I want some of what you're on too!!

I have never heard of this tradition, but we were planning to use the money FILs give us as a gift to buy our bedroom set. It's funny because when we were searching for bands (which FILs are paying for) we were thinking of getting a band our friend used in Pennsylvania. Well, the price he wanted to charge us to come here was more than double what our friends paid. FH parents still would have paid if we wanted it, but I said that's ridiculous! We can find a band here that's just as good for less money and use the rest of the money to buy a bedroom set!

I don't know what's tradition and what's not - my mother claims that the tradition is that the bride's parents pay for the bedroom set yet no one else outside of my family has ever heard of this 'tradition'.

Some families do their own things and it becomes tradition - to THEM.

But - yeah, no, I've never head that.
Now share what you've been smoking!

p.s. I think it's kinda gross in a way - if we were doing the 'bam shiky bang bang' in a bed my IL's bought - I wouldn't be able to get that out of my skull.

well, I can say that I DID NOT think of it in the way. So I must relinquish my perv of the day crown to you.

No. you still win. You had thoughts about a 5 yr old boy!

Italian mother.... right?

It is a traditional thing. From my memory, it's the groom's family that buys the dining room. The mom buys the bedroom.

I really don't find it that odd though! To each their own!

No, it is really an old-school Italian tradition. It's also a tradition that your mother is supposed to make your bed for when you come back from your honeymoon. It's supposed to be done in all your new sheets, etc.

Although I won't be doing that, I did save all of our stuff so that I can do that for our first night in our condo.

Ahh - how did you guess that she's Italian! I've never heard about the dining room set thing - I just always think that my mom makes it up as she goes along.

I've never heard of it, I thought it was a strange 'tradition' when I read that post, but I figured there's a lot out there I don't know about! Glad I'm not the only one!!

I was thinking the same thing, why would I want the FILs to buy that?? Private stuff goes on there!!

Well my FMIL bought my FI and I a bed (headboard/mattress/box spring) but that was more of her housewarming gift when we moved into our apartment. We weren't even engaged at the time.

I never heard of/ expected her or my FFIL to buy us a bedroom set. But then again, I'm not moving into a house anytime soon.
