Possible flea problem...

Well, it could turn into one if we don't do something about it. My dogs brought in a couple of fleas into the house from the yard, and I need to know if anyone can help me with what we could use to get rid of them. I need something that's safe for the baby since he crawls and climbs everywhere. I want to take care of this before we get infested. The dogs still have fleas on them and they have the Advantix on the them??? It's not a lot right now, but it could be soon! Does anyone have any ideas on what we could do?

Re: Possible flea problem...

First off until the first good frost in NC, you need to use flea prevention.

We use Frontline on our dog here in Fl and I use interceptor for heartworms.

You need to go to a vet's office and buy a Capstar. A Capstar will kill all fleas on your dog ASAP for about a day. It's insane stuff you can give it to your dog and wrap him in a white sheet and unwrap the sheet in about an hour and you will see tons of dead fleas (don't recommend the sheet thing btw)

Then give you dog a wash with any kind of shampoo it doesn't have to be flea shampoo. Flea Shampoo is actually pretty much bunk you can use any kind but you need to soap it up and have it sit for 15minutes. The 15 minutes of soap kills every flea on your dog by drowning them.

Then crate your dog or put him outside of in a safe room.

Next buy Borax detergent. You get it in a box in the detergent lane at any store. You sprinkle it on your carpets and or furniture and let it sit for a few minutes then vacumm it up. It will kill the fleas that may have hid in your carpet or couch.

The following day apply Frontline. Then repeat in 30 days if NC hasen't seen a good frost yet.

If you do everything I said it should go away without a problem. You can skip the bath if you want if it's too much trouble. Or you can make an appointment to get your dog a bath and while he is there ask them to give him a capstar (btw, they cost about 5 bucks) and then while he/she is getting done do your house.

The only bad thing is if you take him to get a bath they could get in your car.

You will be fine if you do what I have said. I had trouble finding a job after the wedding especially with the USAF moving us around so much so I used to work for vets.

If you have any questions feel free to FM me.

The borax is safe with the baby and anyway you will vaccum it all up.

Re: Possible flea problem...

The Borax is what I just vacuumed up actually. Then a little while later, there was a flea. I don't think it's from the carpet though, I think it's from the dogs. They did just come in from outside and then a little while after I saw a few fleas. I was using Frontline, but then I went to a different vet and they said they didn't carry it there, and that Advantix was better. So I got it. Personally I like the Frontline. Do you think that I need to get the yard sprayed?

Re: Possible flea problem...

Hopefully you can kill those little suckers. I would call someone to see what you can do about the fleas. This happened to my sister and she had to leave her house for 3 days while she had someone come in and bomb her house. She had a 4 month old at the time. She was told to wash everything - all blankets, drapes, clothes etc.

Re: Possible flea problem...

You have to use the capstar first so that it kills the fleas then do the borax.

I prefer Frontline because it is one of the safest flea treatments and it actually works for the full month. If you use the frontline every month you shouldn't need to treat your yard but below I mention how you could do it yourself.

About your yard. Your husband can just go to Lowes and buy Over N'Out and put it down once a season and then water it in and it is a ton cheaper then having your yard sprayed.
The only problem is I know from my parents that NC has some crazy laws so OverNOut might not be sold there.
