Are you going to do this? Is it required by your church or officiant? Does fh have a problem with it? Also if you are doing it, what do you hope to get out of it?

Re: Pre-Martial Counseling
The church we're getting married in does not require this. Even though we have been together for a long time, I wish we could do this because I think most couples would benefit from it.

Re: Pre-Martial Counseling
We had to do this to get married in our catholic church...
so it was mandatory.
Its called pre-cana...
I think in theory its important but ours wasn't totally helpful...

Oh I thought it would be helpful? I guess it is subjective though.

Re: Pre-Martial Counseling
It is helpful if both of you are into it and want to learn from it.
Also, it depends on your instructors...
I have heard some people have wonderful experieinces!

Re: Pre-Martial Counseling
Our church requires pre-cana. Not sure about the foccus thing though. If we don't have to do it, we're not going to.

Re: Pre-Martial Counseling
I am not Catholic (neither is FH) but his pastor is going to be the one offciating the ceremony and pre-marital counseling is a requirement in order for him to marry us. We have not started it yet because I am still living in Chicago, but when I move back home officially, I guess we will begin the sessions. I'm assuming it is to see ow well we really know each other, what plans/expectations we have for our marriage, how we will execute finances, discussing possible common pitfalls, etc., etc.

If you and FH want counseling and he didn't require it. . . why don't you just ask him?

He would do it, but fh doesn't think we need it. That's the issue with that.

I think it's basically the same but in non-catholic churches I think it's just called pre-marital counseling.
