Is it safe to take them before you plan on getting pregnant? Also, is it safe to take while on BC? I am just newly married and know nothing about this subject.

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
Talk to your doctor but my understanding is that they are just a specific combination of vitamins and I was told that taking a good multivitamin with folic acid 400mcg is the same. So I just take a regular multivitamin daily and I believe it will have me ready when we TTC (in a long long time.)

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
It is safe.. Prenatals are vitamins, not medication. I began taking them way before we were TTC..
ETA - I actually began taking them because I was experiencing hair loss (due to stress) and they helped with that! I have been taking them ever since.

So, I don't need a prescription right? Are any brands better than others?

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
Some prenatals can make you constipated (due to the high iron levels) so I took GNC Woman's Prenatal Vitamins w/o Iron. Make sure you eat a fiberful diet while taking them

No you dont need a prescription. I dont think any one brand (over the counter) is better than another. What you want to do, if you are taking them specifically because you are going to TTC, is check how much folic acid it contains. Also if Iron upsets your stomach, you want to make sure it either doesnt have Iron, or has a low dosage. They can be expensive so a lot of girls (here) take the generics... CVS, Target. They work just fine and contain the same amount of folic acid as a higher priced brand name. I took the CVS brand for about 4-5 months! Hope this is helpful!

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
My Dr. put me on prescription pre-conceive vitamins about a year before we were even trying to conceive - per my Dr. it's just a multi-vitamin - so why not!

I was taking CVS brand, no problems....I'll probably pick up the Walmart brand when I go shopping next. As long as you are building up the folic acid, you're ok...

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
Thanks for all the advice. I am going to pick up some at lunch today (probably generic). I want to be prepared when the time comes.

Re: Pre-Natal Vitamins
I heard it good to start taking pre-natal a year before TTC and it doesnt hurt to take with BC.
