My father bought my parent's house but it is in my MOTHER's name. Smart lady.Though I think they did that for tax purposes as they are still married after 49 years. The house was then put in a trust as both of them are ill and they did not want their children to have to pay unnecessary taxes or risk losing it in the event of something happening to them. Just something to think about.

I own a house and he owns two - and we have discussed the idea of a pre-nup, but agree whole-heartedly that we don't need or want one. As some other ladies have said, in my opinion, a pre-nup implies that you could get divorced. We wouldn't be getting married if we weren't totally committed to 'forever'. I'm the child of divorce, so I don't take the issue lightly.

ETA- Pre-nups aren't a 'bad' thing'. I agree that for some people, it is a practical decision. We have just decided that it's not for us.

Alright, people may not like me saying this but its JMO that just because you are thinking about a pre-nup that you are unsure about your life partner. So those of you considering it, please don't be offended if people are suggesting it. We live in a crazy world where things really do change on a daily basis and with divorce rate so high, you are just being realistic and I think thats great. I also think that the number one reason for divorce is not communicating with one another so if you honestly sit down and talk to your fh about it and you are both in agreement that this something you want/need/ will not be put tension between you then thats fine. Everybody's situation is different and you just have to go for what works for you and your soon to be family.

In our relationship there was no good reason to have one. LOL But there are lots of good reasons to have one I suppose.

No reason for us to have one. We're poor med students right now. Though he's better off than I am. He's in a MD/PhD program (their tuition is paid by the school AND they get a stipend), while I had to take out loans for med school. (booo)

But I like to remind him that once we're married, my debt will become OUR debt

FH is in the same position as you!
So, no, no prenup. Nither of us have anything. I would do one to ensure his loans stay his! But you can't write a prenup on minuses!!

I am not a lawyer, just have a friend who is in family law. I believe that you don't need a prenup for this. In case of divorce, the house would still be yours. If they can trace you oweing the house before marriage, it will stay yours.

I do understand people getting prenups though. Life is hard, and unpredictable. Things happen. 60% get divorced. Everyone thinks its not them, and yet, its 60%. I don't think there is anything wrong in protecting your assets. For the just in case. People think the 'breakup' will be amiable, of course, because they are in love now. But, what if someone cheets on the other? I bet than, all bets are off.

As you saw above, we are not doing one. We have no reason to. No assets, stocks, bonds, no rich inheritances. But, I totally understand people that do!

were buying a house and i am putting down a very large percentage of the down payment. were not signing a 'prenup' but more like a 'partnership' agreement incase anything happens with our relationship or if one of us dies, we know how to split up the house.

We are actually having a pre-nup. There is nothing iffy about our relationship. We've known each other since childhood and dated for 6 years before getting engaged. We are very pragmatic thinkers. We both have every intention of spending the rest our lives together (which is why we dated so long) but you just never know what the future holds. The thing is to have everything established up front while you both are each others greatest loves, not later when you're bitter and want to screw each other. We both have assets which we have sat down and worked out perfectly. My mother would kill me if she knew this. She is from the school of man-haters and believes the women should get everything and all men should get screwed.

not really sure yet. SO has a lot of money and i would understand if he wanted to protect what is his. i also have a nice little pile of dough that is stricly for my future. i don't think a prenup is ANY indication of a rocky relationship. we are wonderful together, but the both of us are much more practical and tend to be more pragmatic situations where other couples would err of the side of romance.

Re: Pre-nup?

I recently learned something interesting....you cannot get married in a Catholic Church if you have a pre-nup. Don't ask me how they would know, but we learned that during Pre-Cana recently. I guess its because the church really does see marriage as forever, so even the thought of such an agreement is against what they approve of.

Just saying what I know, not whether i necessarily agree

They didn't mention pre-nups to us in Pre-cana...

no I am not putting his name on the deed. I love him very much and he is okay with not having his name on the house. In todays day and age you really need to look out for your future. I also have a child so it is really for my child. In case anything happens to me my son will be taken care of.

I wish we had that much money so we could think of a pre-nup.

Re: Pre-nup?

just so you know a prenup does not mean that you are starting off on a bad foot. If your partner agrees you are actually starting off on the right foot. When 2 people love each other it wouldn't matter either way
