Pre-nup

Pre-nup

What are your thoughts on this? My FH mentioned it to me the other day kinda joking but I think he meant it, I'm really secure in our relationship and we will be together for 5 years when we get married, and I know it's just a 'just in cae, you never know what the future holds,' type thing, but I'm still unsure of how I feel.

I wouldn't do it b/c I'd feel like hes putting a negative damper on our marriage..... but then again my hunny doesnt make crazy money to where he'd lose half if we were ever to divorce in the future lol Do you want one? If you don't want one, def. talk about it and let him know how you feel.

whenever i do get married, it's a must for me. I inherited a lot of money and in the will it says that i must have a pre-nup or else i lose all of the money.

FH wants one. He says he wants to make decisions while we still love an dcare about each other just in case we ever have to make them once feelings are hurt. It makes sense to me.

We;re doing one too - FH says he doesnt care - he only wants me ;) but I don't think pre-nups say anything about how you feel about each other - it's just some paperwork -

It dosn't put a damper on a marriage. A marrige is a legal contract and you have to look at a prenup the same way. If you have a lot at stake..you'd be crazy not to have one.

I'm getting one because I own my own apartment which has increased over 200% and have a large 401k and pension which he does too so we need to have it all on paper in case.

I think it also depends on where you on in yoru life. If I was getting married in my 20's things would be different but we are almost 40 and have a lot more to loose...

Many of my friends have signed prenups you have to protect yourself these days.

if you want to know something funny, we brought it up last week when one of his family members mentioned he should get one. Made me so mad but, what can I say?

We are not getting one. However, Im not opposed to it at all. When you have alot of personal affects that you worked hard for (like homes cars money) I could totally understand wanting to secure it. Would it be different if you were asking for it? FH & I own our own things seperately & now we are venturing into things together. But why shouldnt we secure our own things? It doesnt damper your marriage its not about possibly getting divorced because FH & I are together for over 5yrs & I know we will make it. I think its just about security. Its all in how you look at it.

He never brought it up...but I could see him wanting one. He has a business a house ETC. he's been through a divorce before. He hasn't said anything thus far and the wedding is 4 months away but I know that a prenup came up in a movie. I said I was anti and I wouldn't get one. I'd be upset to be honest if he brought it up. IMO I think it brings distrust into the relationship. It is just a piece of paper and could mean absolutely nothing down the road but I think I would have second thoughts

Re: Pre-nup

I was thinking of doing it. I have a lot of savings and a trust account BUT I am not sure. I would be bothered if my FH did it to me. We'll see. I am still undecided about this.

But then again, I thought about this after I typed this. FH has a lot to lose as well. His Parents' are selling us their house for below the market price and when we sign the papers, it will be ours. So if we get divorced, we would have to split it up. So, my answer would have to be NO. No prenup for us.

I agree. FH & I are in our 30's with alot to lose as well. Even though we decided against a pre-nup neither one of us were opposed to the idea.

Re: Pre-nup

Its a little strange talking about that sort of thing. Any lawyer would say to DO IT but I'm mixed on it too. I think prenups work for couples where 1 of the 2 of them have a lot of assets (think business or property owner) and the other doesn't. To me, thats when it makes more sense.
If both people are on similar pages financially I don't think its so necessary. Plus god forbid a marriage ends in divorce, if the assets 2 people bring to the table are similar, they're not gonna suddenly grant 1 of them a ton of money out of nowhere.

I recommend reading 'Lies at the Altar' by Dr Robin, she was on Oprah..its a really good book about marriage, and certainly opens your eyes to subjects you wouldn't normally think about. And there's definitely a lot of words on pre-nups.
